Pre yeast pour, has a clear golden colour with a fizzy white head, that stays as a thin cap. Smell has a lot of clove to it, with banana coming in second place. Looks good and smells good. Pouring the sediment didn't change things much.

Up front the carbonation makes it tough to pin down the taste. I'd say it's fairly heavy on citrus though. A black pepper flavour hits somewhere in the middle and stays along to the finish. As it crosses the tongue there is a short flash of bubblegum with a long clove finish. The finish lingers for a good amount of time, and leads to a craving for the next sip.

Mouthfeel is a bit coarse due to the high amount of carbonation. Body is light. The beers an easy drink, would be damn near perfect on a patio in the shade, during a hot summer day.

Appearance: Dark reddish-orange to amber and copper with a thick, light tan head.

Smell: Rich creamy, banana aroma with chewy wheat scent. Light bubble gum scent on top a nice maltiness.

Taste: Big, spciy malt flavor, chewy, creamy. Cinnamon, pepper, caramel, crisp spring water, light woodiness. Fruity ending with banana and light apple or pear. Bubble gum and saw dust.

Mouthfeel: Very lively carbonation exposes nice flavors and texture. Clean ending, slightly sticky but very comfortable.

Drinkability: Excellent, robust flavor, clean feel, and all around a wonderful beer.

A glorious pour into a tall pilsner glass: the head is full, frothy, dense in appearence on the top with pizza crust bubbles forming on the walls of the glass. Deflates rather quickly leaving some sudsy sheathes of lace. The body is a slightly muddy amber.

Smell:

Even as the beer evacuated the bottle, I instantly thought "banana chips!" Pulling my nose close after the pour, I pick up a nice flakey freshly baked bisquit heartiness, a slightly sour under-cut of lemon zest sprinkled over baked green apples, and the finish goes back to the banana chips I picked up on initially. Lovely.

Taste:

Let's talk about mouthfeel first. That's what I notice right away. This brew has the perfect weight on my palate -- mid-weight, just right between light and dense, with a wonderful almost grainy quality that could be blamed on pouring some of the sediment in. Anyway, feels great.

Mouthfeel:

I mean taste! Opens with a narrowly bitter nudge against the borders of my palate, followed by a fresh kick of lemon-zestiness that recedes quickly throughout the middle allowing the soft hops profile to take center-stage as the finish. The aftertaste is a nice, softly pungent yeastiness, encompossed by gentle citrus notes, a dash of black pepper, and a lingering hop twist. Dry finish.

Very well-rounded, pleasurable beer experience.

Bottle. Pours with a massive white head like a proper weizen, however the colour is a few shades darker than your average hefe. Big banana and clove on the nose with a bit of malt in the background. Sweetness is reasonably low for the style and phenolic clove tones are very noticable on the finish. Aftertaste does not stay around as long as my reference hefe (Weihenstephan). Mounth feel is soft and light, not overly carbonated. A solid hefe and very drinkable.

500ml bottle with no dates, poured into a weizen.

Hazy, copper-brown with a small white head that falls to a thin ring and veil rather quickly. Looks more like a dunkel, IMO.

Has that typical yeast- bannana-clove aroma that is perfect for the style.

Nice wheat backbone with the cloves making a second appearance. Dry finish that has a quick bite from the carbonation.

The mouthfeel is a tad light, but this is quite drinkable as it goes down easy with lots of flavor.

Pours with a white head that vanishes rapidly to nothing, leaving a copper tinged- with slight orange appearance. Smell is tart with a little bit o' bananna. Taste is also tart, even a little sour- like a hint of berliner weiss. A little spicy, to boot. Feels a little thin in the mouth, but goes down crisp and quickly.

Was OK, but not my favorite. So many other weiss to have that are so much tastier. I didn't really like the tartness that much either. To be fair, it is possible that this bottle I got was a little off given the slight sour tang...

This beer is a medium gold color (darker than I expected), mildly hazy with a thin white head and no lace. Delicate champagne bubbles attempt to renew the head. Great clove, bananas, and vanilla aroma that signifies a Hefe weizen. Mild lemon peel back to the nose. The flavor has all of this. The lemon peel flavor is a bit stronger lending a wonderful brightness to the taste. The hops definitely lend a mild bitterness and give it zing. Nice smooth mouth feel. Great refreshing beer. Wonderful for warm (or cold) afternoons.

It's the color of slightly oxidized copper ; deep orange with a slight cloudiness betraying the prescence of the yeast. There is a wonderful densely-carbonated off-white head which lingers. The surface never quite shows itself beneath the fine layer of fizz.
The nose is bananas and clove, as advertised, with a prominent sweet malt prescence ; yeasty and fruity. The yeast appears as a hint of that "old-socks" aroma. I mean that only in a good way.
Flavors of malt and fruit, and, yes, banana, followed by a gently hoppy drying finish. A fuzzy tang of carbonation keep's one's tongue involved. As the brew warms you'll find that the last few sips feature a much rounder chewy maltiness. That is, if you haven't chugged it all down before then.
It's sudsy, delicious and very drinkable.

This hefe poured a clear orange color , with a two-finger head that quickly disappeared. Appears to be very heavily carbonated, judging by the massive amounts of bubbles streaming to the surface. Smells mostly malty, yeasty, with a faint tinge of lemon.

Tastes very smooth, not as flavorful as I expected. Big wheat-malt flavor, very little clove taste, finish is clean and dry. Very effervescent, light-bodied.

A quality hefe for the price. I like aventinus better, but this is a solid brew.

Bought the 500ml bottles from a local celler. (Been collecting bottles, one to drink, one to keep. MUST STOP).

Anyway, drank this beer while in europe, thought it was good. So i bought another one review.

Poured dark, which is surprising because i dont remember it being that dark. Looked dark brown - orange. If thats possible.

Tasted very fruitty. With a slight hoppy and clove finish. Easily drinkable and likable.

Would drink more. Not too expensive considering the volume.

Bright orange body, cloudy, with multiple carbonation streams. Fist sized eggshell head, resembling meringue, arising above the rim.

Aroma is the expected banana and clove, but lacks the intensity I was expecting. Takes a good deep sniff to make an impression.

Taste is light and refreshing, though like the aroma, the usual hefe characteristics, while there, are much less intense. that classic "wheat" taste is less, and this comes across like half hefe/ half America wheat.

Mouthfeel is good and proper, light and bubbly, dancing across the tongue and down the throat.

Drinkability is good, but while the lack of intensity of tranditional hefe flavors might increase it, at the same time the blandness decreases desirability.

Certainly a fine beer for a summer afternoon, but not the classic I was expecting.

500 ml brown glass bottle. "The original German wheat beer and
Brewed according to the German purity laws of 1516" note the label.
Was expecting a light colored beer, but actually pours quite dark - swampwater colored (coke and orange soda mixed). Thick white head, foam stays for whole serving. Smell is sharp and yeasty with some citrus with it. Taste is sweet and fruity, get some flavor of oranges. Wheaty and yeasty later on. Has a quite dry finish.

Presentation: Standard looking Half-Litre brown glass bottle. Color coded crown cap and a matching main and neck label proclaim this to be ‘The Original’. Unpasteurized and unfiltered yet there is no strength listed anywhere, only several dot-matrix codes on the back label.

Appearance: Wow, mega surprise here for me. It’s fucking dark!!! Dark chestnut brown cloudy body with a hazed Devon toffee appearance. Thick white head that starts big but settle yet lasts. Minimal carbonation though, but the lasting head punctuates the Glass and lends a solid quality to the appearance.

Smell: Sweet with a delicate soft toffee and banana hint. Strengthens as it warms up to room temperature. Brings some yeast into the finish.

Taste: Lovely smooth chewy feel, fresh malt with a tasty and fruity profile with dark toffee, banana and some citric lemon peel sharpness in the finish. Drinks well. Is this really a Dunkel Hefe?? Were original Hefe’s all Dunkels? Who knows, who cares, for this is most certainly a tasty brew that is nicely balanced. Lovely and Tasty.

Mouthfeel: Feels great on the mouth. Light yet with some decent feel. Smooth feel, chewy almost. Silky wisps in the swallow. Decent feel throughout.

Drinkability: One of the better Hefe-weizens for my money, I love the darker appeal of this one though, different but very appealing for me.

Overall: Jolly nice effort this one! I’ll invest in this again for sure.

Nice pour. Dark for a weizen, cloudy reddish brown with a large, foamy head and good lacing.

Smells like simple wheatmalt: cloves and cloves and more cloves. Nice enough, but without complexity.

Tastes like whitepepper and wheat malt through and through. Dull fruit esters jump around just a bit, but its mostly nothing but pepper and cloves.

This is pretty good weizen, but nothing special.

"The Original" 1pt 9 fl oz.

Foamy off white head that fades to a solid sheet after a few moments. Some thin lacing with average strength. Hazy brown in color with an orange hue.

A big pepper and clove infused nose; some light fruity esters as well: apple, lemon.

Pepper and clove powered flavor with a hint of lemon. This is followed by a burst of carbonation which leads to an aftertaste of nuts and dates.

Light bodied; the carbonation's a bit over the top. Crisp and clean on the palate however.

A very drinkable hefe; the carbonation had me belching for a while, but besides this it's quite a pleasant beer.

Tangerine-amber with a fine cloud of suspended yeast. So fine in fact, that the beer appears clear unless backlit. I'm left wondering if a lack of visible yeast will translate into a lack of yeastiness on the palate. In addition, Weisse is darker than most hefes and looks like a pale ale or an amber ale. The dirty white head is small and is so soft that no lace is seen.

Classic hefe weizen nose with no shortage of wattage despite what appears to be a shortage of hefe. Banana esters are uppermost with clove lurking underneath in a strictly supportive role. I must be part monkey because I love those banana esters in a big way.

This is a flavorful hefe with clove spice playing a more assertive role on the palate than it did in the nose. Although banana has been blunted to some extent, its contribution is still appreciated. Because flavor and mouthfeel are so tightly linked, at least for me, Weisse's thin, buzzy, uncreamy mouthfeel can't help but pull the flavor down a half notch with it.

'The Original' may be the original (it seems to me that another German brewery claims the same honor), but it isn't the best. Still though, this is a good version and is a pleasantly drinkable one.

I had this out of a 500 ml bottle and served in a Hacker-Pschorr Weisse glass. I picked up a single of this at Trader Joe's for $2.99.

Pours a hazy, burnt orange color with a fluffy head on top.

Whiffs of cloves, ripe bananas and bready yeast.

Tastes of bananas and foreign cloves, all with a yeasty profile. Zesty carbonated mouthfeel. This beer is very quaffable, great drinkability level.

This is a solid German Hefe-Weizen and worth checking out. I have had this on tap and it was incredible. Much better on draught.

Appearence is a cloudy dark amber with a huge off white head that left behind a decent lacing. The aroma was grainy with banana and clove.Of course that carries over into the flavor with a slightly bitter finish. The carbonation is champagne like .This is a very decent Hefe weisse , clean ,drinkable and I will definitely try this one again. This is not my favorite in this style but it's definitely worth drinking.

500ml bottle, in a pint glass.

Appearance: Rich mahogany color, slightly hazy, with a good head. On the dark end of the spectrum for the style.

Aroma: Spicy, lemon-citrus aroma.

Flavor: A little wheat malt flavor at first, followed big, and I mean really big, banana-fruit flavors. Phenol notes are medium light, giving a spicy character that comes out more at the end.

Mouthfeel: Lots of carbonation, very effervescent mouthfeel.

An above-average German hefe, quite quaffable.

Lived four years near Munich I used to drink a lot of weizen. This one was one of my favorites. Not to drink a lot but to enjoy cause its to complex to booze and your belly will blow up due to the amount of bubbels this one produces.
Appearance was after pooring it out carefully in my weizenglas great. The huge head and the dark and cloudy colour make it a feast to look at your next to drink. Nice (banana)weizensmell although not to much banana but also malt and other yeasty aromes. Good taste, full for a weizen wich can be very dull. A nice and not to bitter aftertaste with a litle burnt malt. Good beer, always worth a try!

I have been trying hefe weizens for quite some time now and ever since reading about this one I have been looking for it. The dark color of it is appealing since it is not a dunkel but a original and for being a original it exceeds other dunkels in every aspect. The smell is a aromatic delite, with the taste bursting with flavors. So I would have to rank the drinkability as drink as many as you can but anyone who has drank alot of weizens would agree that isn't many because it is a very filling beer. Oh ya when you pour it make sure you get all the yeast from the bottom into your glass.

Hazy peach color topped by thick, creamy, vanilla froth. Strong banana scent like fresh-baked banana bread. As the head dies, the banana subsides to a general sourness. Quite tart, with yeasty, fruity flavor and tones of peach. Thick mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Not bad.

Poured a dark copper colour, much darker than a usual hefe weizen. Head was not very explosive, little retention, almost no lacing. Kind of disappointing in appearance.

Nose was lots of banana, sort of like banana cake. Some cloves and spices.

Taste of bananas, cloves, some sweetness. Quite a syrupy feel to this beer. Not the most flavourful, but still hits the spot.

As far as appearance goes this doesn't live up to the expected look of the style. This hefe pours quite a bit darker than most with an amber color. It's also clear in comparison with most other hefes which I've come to expect to be cloudy, yellow and yeasty.

The aroma is good and representative of the style with estery fruitiness. The taste is tart and dry with a spicy clovelike flavor and a dry puckering finish. There is only a faint banana sweetness to the flavor of this beer. Overall a dry refreshing beer with aggressive carbonation that is refreshing. Easily drinkable and enjoyable.

Not the best of their products. Pleasant malty-yeasty aroma, weak and short-lived head with little or no lace. Some clove, some malt some bitterness, fairly balanced yet somehow bland. Could be a great summer after the lawn beer,,,not great in my book, alas not too bad, just there.
