There's really not much to say. I don't love it. I'm not sure I even like it. The pour was mediocre. The head dissipated in seconds. I could hardly take a picture before the head was gone. Also, no lacing.

Smell is a bit on the acidic side: malty, sweet, weak red wine.

Taste is the most impressive quality, but there's nothing worth noting flavor-wise. The champagne-like mouthfeel is interesting.

Overall...never again. Am I glad I tried it? I don't know. Am I glad when I floss my teeth?

A: Darker than I expected for a weiss. A bit amber in appearance I suppose. Two finger head with great retention and good lacing as well.

S: Banana, clove, the typical hefe.

T: I liked the maltiness on this one and it was also quiet unexpected. Just a touch of some caramel like or munich like sweetness comes through. Banana, a bit clove and most predominately a bready like character make themselves into the beer. None of the overdone bubblegum flavors come through and the esters and phenols while nicely present and not out of whack as in some poorer examples.

M: Carbonation is good and refreshing almost spritzy like but I mean that in the best sense, not like a seltzer but retains the refreshing palate scrubbing qualities of one. Body is good as well.

O: A great beer definately recommend and was pleased with the unexpected malt character.

Perhaps I should not review this bottle because it has somewhere along the line lost someof its pressure. That said, I am writingthis review withnot onlythe present bottlein mind, but numerous examples I have had inthe past.

If poured carefully, the beer is a brilliant medium amber...what I imagine Munich beers to look like at their best 150 years ago. If poured the way I prefer to pour a hefeweissbier, it's a murky medium light brown ho-hum color. That said, the hefe is, to me, an important part of the experience of drinking a bottle-conditioned and bottle-aged wheat brew. I scored down the mouthfeel because this bottle has gone partly flat, but I scored appearance on a careful pour of the first 2/3 ofthe bottle.

This is what I'm talking about,when I say that Bavarian beers are classic styleS that few manage to compete with successfully. A deliciously sweet-tart-spicy blend of wheat, Munich-type malts, and noble hops. It is delicious, refreshing, and a wise choice to pair with a great variety of hearty foods...and even some delicate ones.

Schneider...keep it up, bitte!

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Murky brown with a couple fingers of head that dissipated slowly, leaving maybe half a centimetre of billowy head when done. Visible carbonation. Darker in colour than I would have expected.

S: Cloves, banana, caramel sweetness.

T: Sour and yeasty. Maybe some lemon. I don't taste what I expected (no banana, no cloves), but it's certainly drinkable.

F: Creamy head, crisp finish.

Appearance: A strange brown with a weird beige tinge due to the suspended yeast. Pure white foamy head on the top that I'm sure would have stuck around and left nice lacing if I had a weizen glass. Honestly though, this beer is pretty gross looking.

Smell: Strong assertion of banana on top of sweet malts.

Taste: Slightly overripe banana or fresh banana bread. Very smooth and uniform banana assertion. Finishes quite sweet.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and somewhat fuzzy, as one would expect from a hefeweizen. Good carbonation though to keep the beer lively and to lighten the body a bit.

Overall: A great beer, but one that is weirdly in a grey area between hefeweizen and dunkelweizen. I think this one more appropriately belongs to the latter, not only because of the similar color between this beer and a dunkelweizen, but the riper (overripe) banana flavors associated with this beer.

In comparation to plenty of generic weizen beers from Germany (better marketed i owned by big companies, smell and body full of banana and cloves), this one is darker, a bit stronger, fuller body and different from them. It has an original note and deserves respect.

1 pint 9oz. into weizen glass.

A - Not necessarily a deep, dark amber, but the high degree of haze gives it such an appearance. Substantial carbonation, medium-density head, and what little lacing there is, are all short lived.

S - The usual suspects for style; fruit, clove, pepper, wheat. While fruit and wheat forward, it is still well balanced. Disappointed however that apple and pear dominate the fruity side as opposed to banana. No bubblegum.

T - Wheat gives way to fruit, which gives way to clove/spice, in an incredibly consistent way. Predominately green apple/pear, some dank banana and clove hidden in the background.

M - Generally smooth. Some viscosity up front while the medium carbonation does its thing. Finishes almost perfectly between wet and dry. Easy drinker.

O - A very decent brew despite that I was hoping for a banana & bubblegum extravaganza. In short, this bottle failed to deliver the modern style expectation. However, what it delivers is supposedly unaltered tradition, which is hard to argue with, and turns out to be just as satisfying.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color. Much darker and more transparent then I expected out of a hefe. Finger and a half of head on the pour. Massively active carbonation in glass while drinking.

Smell: Wheat, oats, and some honey sweetness jumps out right away. Bready yeast provides a really solid body. Caramel and some light nuttiness rounds out the aroma.

Taste: Oats and some shallow wheat greet the palate. Medium fruit tones on the body. Honey and molasses sweetness comes on strong toward the end. Lingering sweetness with a good amount of wheat dryness sits on the palate long after drinking.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is bright and bubbly. Potent wheat tones dry out the palate. Body is a definitely on the lighter side and doesn't really give the drinker too much to think about.

Overall: Does not have the feel of a more traditional hefe but this one is still certainly very drinkable. The aroma is inviting and this brew drinks very easily. Wheat tones in the end just do not have the full bodied tones I really look for and enjoy out of a hefe.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 16.9 oz. bottle into a Westbrook pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy deep gold (significantly darker than expected for a Hefeweizen), with a finger's worth of white fluffy head and visible carbonation on the low side.

S: Huge fruity yeast esters (apple, pear, strawberries; somewhat less clove and bubblegum), mild spiciness, and a light underlying grainy malt base.

T: Follows the nose very closely. Fruity yeast esters - banana in addition to the aforementioned apple, pear and clove), with some wheat bready malts. Sweet esters in the hang with mild residual graininess.

M: Light body, more alcohol presence than most hefeweizens I've had. Average carbonation sensation.

O: Pretty enjoyable but sweeter than expected. While I wouldn't say it was "boozy", the alcohol was certainly noticeable (especially for this modest of an ABV), and detracted a bit in my opinion.

Pours very dark for a hefeweizen with, obviously a huge head, which is a bit more off white than usual. Smell of banana and nutty toast. Taste spicy with a very refreshing citrus input and big wheat yeasty flavors in the backbone. Extremely drinkable, and I much prefer this over Weihenstephaner.

As Tap 7 at Bottega in Yountville. Pours deep bronze gold with a fluffy white head. Aroma of sweet fruits like pears and bananas, some yeast spice, a bit of sugars and florals. Flavor is sweet banana, clove, pears, brown sugar interestingly enough. Nice and light, with lots of bubbly carbonation and a sweet and refreshing lasting finish. These guys know their stuff. Yum.

A: cloudy/hazy amber-brown; passes light but not truly translucent; initial full off-white head, fades to scan surface film;

T: per the nose, umami savory, yeast and spice, aftertaste of apple peel
M: light-medium-bodied, slight acidic bite, leaning toward dry
O: Unexpectedly diappointing. I might try again with another bottle, but this has a current of unpleasant meatiness and umami.

Update: I'm leaving my original comments unchanged. I've had a second bottle today, and I would amend the unpleasant umami to a mild note in this one. My understanding is that when unintentional, it comes as a by-product of yeast in an over-aged beer.

Changes: Smell from 2.75 to 3.25, taste from 3.00 to 3.5, and overall from 3.25 to to 3.5.

Pour is a dark copper brow, hazy, with an off white tight head. Nose has a hint of roast, a fair bit of yeast, lightly dusty and lemon notes. Taste is similar, dark malt, lots of yeast, dust is faint, a good bit of lemon and candied sugar. Body is light, moderate carbonation and flavor thins a bit in the finish.

Pours very cloudy brown gold color with a big 2 finger foamy off white head that faded very slowly leaving minimal lacing.

Smells of orange peel, wheat, yeast, light clove and light floral hops, caramel and like a gingerbread cookie. Nose is nice a soft with the typical Hefe accents expected from this brewery.

Tastes of wheat bread, caramel, yeast, light floral hops, lemon zest and mild spices like coriander and pepper. On par for the style.

Light and zesty with mild carbonation, a medium body and a slightly bitter grainy finish. A nice dark Hefe-Weizen that was a nice deviation from the norm and tasty and easy to drink.

In 1977 I spent six weeks in West Germany traveling to NATO bases and fondly remember asking myself repeatedly, “why doesn’t beer in the US taste this good?” Today most of the world class German beers are readily available in the US in bottled form. In a effort to recapture some of that 1977 German beer magic, I am determined to try as many of the current German imports as possible and practical, starting with the Hefe-Weisse category.

(Another name for Weissbier. "Hefe" means yeast, and "Weizen" means wheat, so Hefeweizen is "yeast wheat." Germans prefer to call the brew Weissbier, while North Americans prefer the term Hefeweizen).

The Schneider Weisse Tap 7 was in a 500ml / 1pint 9 oz. bottle and clearly marked with 5.4% ABV. Poured into a Weissbier glass to accommodate it’s half liter volume, the brew attained four fingers of a dense off white head that dissipated very slowly and left lots of lacing. The beer appeared to be a hazy dark honey color that reminded me of Hefe-Weiss Dunkels. It is unfiltered.

The aroma had definite malt/grain, spices, fruit, and some citrus characteristics.

The complexity of this beer stands out compared to most other German or Hefewizens I have tasted. Flavors of orange/citrus, spicy cloves, caramel dominate wrapped with malt.

The mouth feel also stands out in terms of a viscous, velvety body with medium carbonation and a lingering finish. Very nice.

Overall this is a worthy beer from an excellent German Brewer.

500 ml bottle purchased from LCBO for $3 CDN. Served cold into a pint glass. Re-reviewing this, as I looked through my ratings recently and was surprised this one wasn't ranked a bit higher.

Appearance - Hazy, muddy orange color with 3+ fingers of head that is dense and frothy. Great retention and some nice lacing.

Smell - Banana and clove, some bubblegum and I got a bit of caramel in there. Potent and delicious smelling, very inviting.

Taste - Big banana flavor, with some bubble gum aftertaste. Not a lot else going on here a bit of clove and some faint peppery / spicy flavor in the back that transitions to a tiny hop bite near the end. Mostly though the sweetness of the banana dominates.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and moderately high carbonation. Slightly fizzy in the mouth.

Overall - Dlicious and one of the best. This one leans a little bit sweeter than Hacker Pschorr or Weihenstephaner but is definitely one of the best in the category.

not at all what i expected from tap 7, and frankly, its a step below their other beers even though this is the original. its much darker than i expected for a hefe, more copper than anything else, with very tall and well lasting white head. it smells like stale wheat malt and dark fruit, and odd combination for the style indeed. i get very little of the classic banana yeast complex these styles are known for, and instead get a sort of chalky grainy vibe all the way through. its an easy drinking beer, well carbonated and all, but the flavor profile, especially towards the finish is just a little off putting. its tannic and watery, and the simple relationship between yeast and wheat is nonexistent for me here. its not a bad beer, but its off the style lines for sure, and just doesn't impress me the way their others have. still, at under 4 bucks a bottle, the price is hard to match. i wonder if freshness had anything to do with my lackluster experience.

A: Cloudy and tawny in color, leaning harder toward the brown shades. Creamy white head retains very well. Lacing coats the glass in a sheet of foam.

S: Banana bread with walnuts, brown bread, brown sugar. Hints of dates and figs. Traces of white pepper. Yeasty.

T: Cracked black pepper is fleeting. Fruity and juicy esters. Suggestions of raspberry. Touch of clove. Banana bread and brown sugar. Yeast. Yeasty and vaguely spicy finish.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied. Well carbonated, wheaty, and creamy. There is a slight suggestion of weight to it; at least more than I'd expect.

O: This is bigger and sweeter than your average hefeweizen. Not bad, but also not really what I'm looking for in the style.

A: Big, off white two finger head that dissipates quickly. Cloudy amber brown, very dark for a hefeweizen.

S: Smell is light on this one, bananas, caramel.

T: Yeast dominates the flavor profile, accompanied by peppery spices, some bananas, and a bit of light caramel malt and citrus on the finish. Warm spices and a bit of a sour taste dominate the aftertaste, quite dry as well.

M: Thin but lots of carbonation - not my favorite.

O: This is an easy drinking beer. Overall, I'm left a bit disappointed - this brew is somewhere between Tap 6 and Weihenstephaner Hefe. It is light enough to make a great session beer, and I think I was a bit off expecting big strong flavors like those of Aventinus.

Another iconic hefeweizen for the review books and one I have looked forward to trying given the high profile of Schneider and co. as a traditional German wheat beer brewer. Recently spotted a bottle along with its darker bigger brother Aventinus and snagged both. This one is a rather dark golden honey color, cloudy and perhaps darker than most other hefeweizens. Tons of off-white foam as expected. Aroma is heady with phenolics and nutty strong yeast, ample clove with some fruity banana but the former notes predominate. Palate is expectedly bubbly and yeast forward and here you get a bit more banana than on the nose, although clove spice still reigns supreme. Maybe somewhere between Ayinger (fruity) and Weihenstephaner (spicy), captures both classic hefe elements but still more on the spicy side of things. Makes me think of some ginseng chewing gum I once tried although that was a lot nastier than this, which is more than enjoyable. Fairly thick creamy body but a nice crisp dry earthy finish with what I think are a few hoppy citrus notes. The spice accumulates and even gets a bit warm (!) and the dryness stands apart from many other wheat beers. More caramel/dark fruit and lactic sour character than many others as well. Rustic and workmanlike.

.5L bottle:

The beer poured a dark hazy golden color that produced a nice thick, creamy white head, which was well retained. The beer gave off an excellent, rich malty aroma, with hints of banana, yeast and some spice. The taste of the beer was excellent taste...full flavor and that nice and pronounced. Wheat, banana, yeast and that slight hint of spices. The beer had a light body to it, as expected from the style, good carbonation and extremely easy to drink. Overall, an excellent brew.

super dark honey color with nice head on top. most wheats are not this dark.... head is a creamy white and settles to a decent finger's worth. strong typical rich Weiss aroma. typical Weiss flavor, although a bit dry compared to others I recollect. slight twang to the taste, may be related to the 'dry' at the end. a very decent Weiss beer. cant go wrong with this one; most, if not all by Schneider is above average....

Poured into a chalice. Not a strong pour.

A good beer but unimpressed. There are certainly better representations of this style.

A – Amber with a dense off-white half-finger head. Head easily brought back with a good swirl. Cloudy.

S – Yeasty, faint pepper/spicey, no bananas.

T – Wheaty, a little caramel, peppery, faint lemon.

MF – Medium light bodied. Little to no after taste.

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-

APPEARANCE : Golden orange with a sort of hazy milky hue, somewhat intriguing. Head starts off-white, medium size, but quickly shrinks down to pretty much nothing.

SMELL : First nose is malt and bready yeasts with some fruits - bananas? Second nose opens up the yeasts some more with spicy aromas. Third nose is yeasts and faint hops mixed in a rich fruity profile, banana based. Reminds me of banana bread to a point.

TASTE : There's a roasted side to the malts that wasn't there on the nose, with some very faint barley sugar. Bread yeasts are still present, so are the bananas, but definitely fainter than they were on the nose. Spices are also much fainter but somehow more elaborated, creating an almost gingerbread palette.

MOUTHFEEL : Very rich, layered, wheat oriented texture. Good carbonation hold this up into a fluffy feeling. Very pleasing.

OVERALL : I've had this one often and only just got down to reviewing it. I'll keep on having it often. Very good brew.
