A: into a weizen glass, murky medium to dark amber - hazy from yeast - full off-white head that slimmed to a fily cap with some arms of lace

S: banana and vanilla over malts

T: spice and clove up front, pale fruits and wheatiness, some sweet vanilla on the finish

M: medium weight, moderate carbonation, lush and full feeling, soft and creamy

O: the worst fate in the beer world for a hefeweizen (in my humble opinion) is that it must inevitably be compared to the Weihenstephaner, and in the case here, it pales by comparison. A decent hefeweizen, typical in flavors, feel, and aromas, but just lacking a certain something. But don't take my word for it: buy and try - this beer may appeal to some more than others (like me), and its (I think) a must have for fans of the style, as it has been a staple in the style for over 100 years.

500 mL bottle, thanks Thorpe!

Pours darker than expected, a hazed caramel golden with a thin white head. Aroma is heavy on banana and green apple, clove and lemon. Full body with light carbonation and a crisp, yeasty finish. Flavor is full and balanced between yeast, banana, clove, lemon and light caramel. Very good.

A: Very deep brown, very murky. Almost no head.

S: Nose seems to be all malt. While it's very pleasing, there's not much to it.

T: Not quite what I expected for a Hefe, but it still does no disappoint. I agree with other reviewers that this is more of a dunkel. Caramel malts, clove, a hint of a tart flavor on the back end.

M: Impossibly creamy and smooth for how much carbonation there is. The mouthfeel completely saved this beer.

O: I agree that this isn't a hefe, but it's still a fine brew. A great warm day sipper when you feel like something a little more malt forward.

I had high expectations for this - one of my favourite styles from the brewers of the glorious Aventinus.

A: Poured a beautiful dark amber colour - reminded me of a homebrew I used to drink working on a farm in Bavaria - much darker than the standard hefe. Medium head that quickly vanished.

S: Faint hint of banana and clove - nothing particularly enticing.

T: All clove and no banana - although there's a pleasant backbone of bready wheat and malt, this is a lot less flavourful and balanced than others I've tried.

M: Slightly less carbonated than your average hefe, but refreshing and smooth nonetheless.

I'd drink this again if it was the only hefe available - it's certainly not unpleasant, but it doesn't stand-up to the likes of Paulaner and Weihenstephaner.
