Notes: Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

Noticed this Weizenbock, which happens to be a colaboration between Schneider and Brooklyn and it's one of my favorite styles (Weizenbock).

Pours a real hazy grainy kind of like a thick chicken broth color with a sixteenth inch white head and it's too difficult to see the action.

Banana and wheat grain, sort of bready and malty aroma with a bubblegum smell in the background.

Complex flavors and real spicy the sediment I swirled around may be too much or it's the intention. Almost like a wheat grain soup taste with an alcohol warming (8.2) and a bit astringent. The astringent sour finish may be the yeast verses the hops or both. The sourness is also evident from the intake kind of off setting the wheat grain soup taste.

Full bodied, wheat grain soup resin feel, and a lively soft carbonation finish within the astringency.

Hit me wrong at first although now that I'm past half way I'm impressed with the balance, something I havn't taken in consideration because of the surprise I had of the whole experience.

Appearance - This is a fuzzy dark orange in color with a nice white head.

Smell - There are some super-sharp citrusy hops in here that are full of spices and herbal notes. There is some nice yeast in here but it is really hard to find. The light banana though keeps this one honest.

Taste - These flavors remind me more of a stiff Belgian bitter, and then you have the banana and clove of the weizen style. This is really a complex beer with flavor combinations that I have never had before. I get everything from the nose with maybe a bit more malt.

Mouthfeel - Man is this a thick beer. It's almost full-bodied and is a meal unto itself. The carbonation is strong but fluffy.

Drinkability - This is a very different beer and almost impossible to rate using style standards or comparisons to past examples of the style. I know it was very fun and exciting to drink though so thumbs up for that.

Honey yellow with a light haze and a torrent of fast rising carbonation. Topped with a finger of white fluffy head.

Fruity, I get candied grapefruit, marmalade, very jam like. Pineapple, a hint of Brett, caramel, and over all, really complex.

Follows through from the nose and does not disappoint in the least. This is an amazing brew. As I described the nose, but up it 5 times in intensity, and that’s what it tastes like. A hint of bitterness on the end but overall its sweet.

Medium body with a light syrupy quality, and lots of carbonation.

Really well done. As Adventus, it reminds me of a Belgian brew in some ways but in the case of Tap 5, its like a blond or even some triples. Found in Chiang Mai, drank April 1st, 2016. Its no joke!

Dear god, this is good.
I got a box of four Schneider-Weisse beers (with a lovely glass) and went for the one I hadn't tried before, without reading the label beyond 'Tap 5'.

Looks great. Lovely big head, cloudy, unfiltered looking.

Can smell those hops straight away while pouring. You know this is no "normales Weizen".
Also clove -- a little, what's that medicinal word... phenolic.
The balance of the clove and hops is lovely.

This taste too is beautifully balanced clove and hops, smooth and full-flavoured, with lovely carbonation -- fine and not too strong. I was so absorbed in the taste and drinkability, it took me a while to notice that this is a really strong beer (I'll be on my ear before dinner is on the table).

Weizen is rarely my first choice in beer, although Schneider-Weisse make some of the best. This beer takes the best of weizen (to my mind), and adds hops in a beautifully balanced way.
Compared to a regular wheat beer, it's a lot drier, and bananas are largely left out of the equation (but there in the background).

At the strength, it's probably just as well I dont have no more of these right now.
But I look forward to drinking again...

Good god. Stick your nose into this recently-poured beer, and you just get a fruit bouquet to your dome. Primarily orange notes, with other fruits (imagine a good, fresh, fruit salad smell with good-sized orange slices).

Taste is hoppy, but not overly so--accenting the fruitiness of the hops without too much of the bitter. The bitter is best defined as 'citrus rind', on the back end of the taste. Wheat and subtle spices play around with the citrus notes throughout, and get better as the beer warms up.

The beer looks amazing, with ample yeast clouding up the brownish-yellow liquid. I'm not much for judging amount of head or anything, but it behaves much like any other Schneider Weisse beer. But--it's nothing like their Aventinus.

The warmth from the alcohol tells me this is a great autumn beer; could pass for summer, too. Hell, I'm going to drink this all the time, now. It's that damn good.

500 ml bottle served in a large Kapuziner wiessbier glass. Pours a murky amber body with a titanic offwhite head that initially occupies most of the glass. Second pour with the yeast swirled in produces a dirty mustard brown color. Head retains well and becomes rocky and pitted.

Aroma begins with a prominent clove essence. Fresh sliced Valencia oranges add a nice citrusy ester. American IPA type hops provide notes of grapefruit and pine resin. Interesting, but odd, atop the German yeast and wheat malt.

Mouthfeel has a medium body and carbonation.

Tastes just like what I imagine a mixture of an IPA and Hefe would be. Citrusy grapefruit bitterness trumps the faint banana note. Clove and white pepper add a pleasant spiciness. Wheat is subdued but yeast is a major player. Finishes grapefruity bitter somewhat like an IPA.

An interesting collaberation to be sure and exquisitely crafted. Personally, I just don't care a great deal for such an aggressively hopped German Hefe.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 15C, adapted). Bottle 50 cl - Batch 2719121113. AROMA: a very pleasant combination of hop aromas (floral and pine) with wheat, bock-like notes (dried fruits) and vanilla phenols. APPEARANCE: amber color and hazy. medium moussy, slight ivory head with average retention. TASTE: a very rich combination of bock components (bread, vanilla), some dark fruits, with a wheat background and hop flavours (citrusy and floral). low bitterness with a somewhat dry finish, some alcohol warmth. PALATE: medium-full body with moderate carbonation. some alcohol sensation. OVERALL: a very good weizen bock with a floral hop twist.

L - dark golden orange body, white thick lingering head
S - hops? Piny, grassy notes
T - pine, bitterness
F - little to no carbonation, smooth, light coat
O - I was expecting a banana filled weizenbock and I experienced a double IPA. Really threw me off. Maybe I just got a beer with bad hops. Maybe it got hot cold hot cold on the way here. Different from other weizenbock's I've had in the past.

Heard good things about this one, figured I'd give it a shot. I like the style, but not something I pick up often.

Poured into a tall hefe-glass. Murky, yellowish-brown body. Large white head on the top that held on well. Sporadic lacing sticks to the glass.

Smells really good. Lots of banana and clove. Loaded with spicy, floral hops. Has a pineapple, wedding punch aroma as well. Smells exactly like wedding punch to me actually. I like wedding punch, haha.

Spicy yeast, wheat body. More spices in this than the typical banana profiles. A bit more subdued than the aroma indicated. Don't know what else to say about it. Tasty, typical hefe taste for me. As it warms some alcohol become noticable.

Nice full body. Crispness introduced by the carbonation, a bit prickly actually.

Overall a tasty beer and a bit unique with its level of hoppiness, especially in the aroma. Good stuff and worth a try.

Cellar temperature in my weizen glass.

Classic German wheat beer presentation of a rocky white head over a glowing cloudy orange. Dense, elegant lacing. Beauteous to behold.

That aroma is somethin' else. A distinct citrus bouquet of orange, lemon, and lime, some peach, honey, and vanilla. And sweet white bread. Woo!

The flavor is like fresh squeezed orange juice at first! Then I get more tropical fruit like pineapple and peach. The incredibly juicy fruitiness dries up into a crispy-clean, biscuity, bready finish. Well done.

The feel is appropriately full, sprightly, and spritzy.

Fantastic weizenbock. The hoppiness went over my head a bit since I'm a hops-desensitized IPA drinker, but they definitely have more of a presence here than in other wheat beers I've had. More notably, it gushes tropical fruit, which really makes it shine.

an unlikely collaboration, and a beer I really enjoyed. this pours cloudy pale brass color with a good two inch white head. the nose is really hoppy. so many hopfen beers just pay lip service to it, but this one is super hoppy in terms aroma. there is fruity hops, almost citra, but apparently some hallertau variety is used. its more hoppy than almost any other german thing ive had, and I love it. there is also a lot of heavier wheat malt and alcohol taste to this, as well as a very dry finish that is fruity and bitter from these hops. the is entirely unlike any weizenbock ive had out there, and one that I will be coming back to. its a little filling, and the alcohol can get you going pretty quick, but the flavors are fantastic and the mouthfeel works for what it is. really good carbonation on such a full bodied beer is a nice change of pace. overall the highlight of this beer for me is the hop complexion, its big and bold and unique, especially for the style. the is exceptionally well done.

edit: this is a little harsher from the tap, more residuals, more bitterness, a sweetness too, not as evolved on the yeast front. one of those odd beers i much prefer in the bottle for whatever reason, they two formats yield a vastly different product, strange as it sounds...

Looks (3.5/5) – Pours a rich gold with some nice orange colours to it. Head is decent: it rises a bit small on a hard pour; it’s texture is a bit soapy; it falls very slowly to a decent cap that really lasts and leaves little lacing. It is really ridiculously opaque, which makes it look a tad dark.

Smell (4.5/5) – The smell is a really great marriage of the hops and the yeast. The yeast is very citrusy, it has some lemon, but it’s pretty firmly in the grapefruit- range. That’s complemented really well by the banana notes of the weizen yeast. There’s also some light fruit notes like orange peel and pear that come through on the finish that are probably yeast (maybe spicing or hops). I notice that the clove yeast aroma is relatively minimal, which I think works for the style.

Taste (4.5/5) – Really nice; it actually reminds me a bit of the Dogfish Blood Orange Hefe. The malt character is fairly mild, but falls into a lightly sweet graininess and a bit of that distinctive wheat flavour a bit of crystal and/or biscuit. The hops are of the same, primarily grapefruit flavour. There’s some citrus and a very little bit of resin, but this is really about that one citrus flavour. That plays really well with the yeast, which is more complexly fruity than many hefeweizens; the banana plays really well with the grapefruit, adding a bit of softness to the harsher grapefruit flavour, but there is also a good assortment of other fruity notes (pear, peach, apricot, etc) with a bit of high-alcohol perfume in there. A high-medium hop bitterness carries through the end with the grapefruit flavour the really balance the sweetness.

Feel (4/5) – I think this one was like a really good hefeweizen in its feel. Light-Medium body and relatively good carbonation (actually a touch lower than usual here) mix with the mouth-coating hops and a slight hint of alcohol to make it feel something like whipped cream.

The balance of this brew is really something great. The new world hops with that grapefruit flavour meets really well with the hefeweizen yeast. I think this mix was especially good because that yeast – for whatever reason – seemed to have a bit less clove. Now, I love clove in my traditional hefeweizens, but this just played it so well. It’s rare that these beers pop up in the LCBO and I love it when they do.

Pours a cloudy dark lemon golden yellow with a giant white foamy head that lasts forever. The smell is strong with lemon,wheat,clove,banana,and alcohol. The taste is tart with apple,pear,lemon,citrus hops,and alcohol . Not bad,but the flavors can be abit overpowering. The m/f is light and the flavors don't mix all that well. This is a summer beer,but the high alcohol kind of of kills this. This is a tough beer to drink. A high octane heffe just doesn't seem to work.

Nice to finally see a beer come to ontario that combines lots of hops with the classic hefe-weizen.

Pours a very intriguing cloudy peachy-orange with lots of floaters and a thick white head. The head subsides leaving some lacing, but the beer seems flat after a while.

What a wonderfully smelling beer. Mandarin oranges, cloves, bananas, peaches, tropical fruit, citrusy hops, this beer has everything! The alcohol is noticeable as it warms up(and as I get slightly buzzed).

Tastes nice and bitter up front with some citrus orange zest, cloves, spices and bananas. The hops are noticeable and balance well with the typical wheat beer flavours. Unfortunately the alcohol isn't very well covered up and comes through as it warms up.

Overall this is a delicious, unique brew, and a style that I would like to see more of. Will definately be seeking this beer out again, mostly for the aroma!

Appearance - [Somewhat cloudy amber with a thin head. Large bubbles.] That was what I wrote after pouring the first half into my glass (stuck with a 14 oz glass right now). After pouring in the second half, the beer is extremely cloudy and yellow! I think that's the biggest difference between two halves of the bottle that I've ever seen.

Smell - Banana, clove, coriander, wheat, alcohol, flowery hops. A bit of pepper.

Taste - The hops really come through on this one. I guess it's not called Hopfenweisse for nothing! Some citrus and pine in the hop flavor. The standard weizen tastes (banana, yeast, etc) are a bit subdued compared to the hops, but they're there. They become more noticable as the beer warms up.

Mouthfeel - Thick with medium carbonation.

Notes - I was a little surprised at how hoppy it was. It's not unbalanced, but it's very untraditional, which is unusual for a German brewer. You can definitely taste the American influence. Overall, an interesting variation on an old style that's worth a try both for hopheads and wheat beer fans.

0.5l bottle into a beer mug.

My expectations for the Schneider version of Hopfen-Weisse is very high, perhaps unfairly so, as I absolutely loved the Brooklyn version. A slow pour of the bottle builds a towering, 2" thick light golden head that shows no intention of receding. Fervent carbonation bubbles upwards through a hazy, peach body. The aroma is distinctively german Hallertau, with notes of spicy, grassy hops, crystal-wheat malts, and fruity yeast esthers.

The taste is quite close to the Brooklyn version, with the main differences being a spicier hop note, more clove, and a sweeter, thicker malt base in the former. Both are good, but I think the American version pulls off a slightly better flavor profile. I do appreciate the spiced, zesty hop bite on the finish of Schneider's Hopfen-Weisse, which rounds out a medium-bodied, well-carbonated mouthfeel. All in all, this beer was outshined (although barely) by Brooklyn's version, but as far as price goes ($3.99 for 500 ml. vs. $12.99 for 750ml), Schneider is far easier on the wallet.

500ml bottle poured into a Sam Adams imperial pint glass. Upon looking this up on BA i see that Brooklyn Brewery brews the same one with different hops so i will do a side by side soon.

A- An extremely careful pour still yielded a lot of floaties that settled on the bottom of the glass and are seen moving up and down the glass. Other than the hazy appearance a very faint yellow with a mixture of a lot of gold and some orange hues. A nice frothy head sits a top the beer creating great lace.

S- First wiff got a very bold deep banana scent with other fruits mixed in. Maybe some apricots thrown in the mix. A whole lot of wheat scent and spices abound with squeezed lemon. A nice bouquet of hops and malts are noted. A very inviting Weizenbock indeed.

T- After a few minutes of warming my first impressions included a nice fruit and spice combination with hops thrown in. The fruit included a very strong banana with pineapple and fresh lemon. The spices although muted included clove and nutmeg. Some yeast also that's from the sediment which can't be avoided. This one rounds out with a nice floral hop punch and malt smoothness.

M- A exceptionally smooth brew with flavors that come and go besides a nice bitter/sour feeling that comes through on the top of the mouth, resembling a fresh lemon feel. medium bodied. The foam also plays a part in this smoothness.

D- One of the smoothest & easy to drink beers i've had during this rough winter and a nice change up. A nice amount of carbonation & not an overload of varying flavors make this a candidate for more than this 500ml version at anytime of the year especially the summer. Has all the chops to be sessionable besides the 8%. I still need to try the Brooklyn version.

500ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a dense and murky burnt amber orange with golden hues and one finger of bubbly white froth. Smell is aromatic hops, fresh cut grass, perfume, unripe banana, clove, bubblegum, pear and apricot, light phenols, baking sugar, ethanol, and powdery, doughy aromas. So complex it's breathtaking! Taste is sweet wheat malt, strong spiciness, more banana and clove, warming alcoholic edge, mildly bitter and earthy hop finish. Mouthfeel is silky-medium, lush and smooth, parched aftertaste with hints of wheat husk and citrus. Good God, this is some crazy shit! A quintessentially German/U.S. collaboration, as it combines the very best features of your favourite weizen with a bold, well-hopped, American ale. Drinkability is high but you need to respect the 8.2% ABV. An enthralling, satisfying, and nuanced beer. Just try it.

Been drinking this for awhile. Finally getting around to reviewing it. This bottle is from the release last year. I pour it into my Sisson's Weiss glass.

The appearance is a murky brownish orange , with a huge rocky head that has meringue like peaks. Lovely. It slowly recedes leaving a thickish cap that never leaves. Lots of lacing all the way down. A fine and active bit of carbonation bubbles that revive the head after each sip are slightly hidden by the opaqueness.

My nose is immersed in pine and citrus as I bring the glass close. Light banana esters and some spiciness as well. Wheat malt and light caramel says this is a strange and different kind of brew. I am intrigued by this unusual bouquet.

Hops hit first and with authority. The wheat smoothes it out with the accompianing banana as a strong undertone. The wheat malt backbone give a good crispness and twang with a touch of sourness; Apples and light fruits, grape and pear. Spice and pepper interplay. The light caramel and banana combine in the finish before the hops kick back in to cleanse and dry the palette. A faint warming from the alcohol as it gets up to temp but no burn. A wonderfully complex taste experience.

There is a slightly oily pine resin thickness from the hops mixed into a medium mouthfeel. It is light enough for summer sessioning but enough weight to enjoy in colder weather. The carbonation is a perfect foil to the hop oil scrubbing the mouth and makes it a champ for a barbecue beverage.

The drinkability is exceptional for 8.2 ABV. The alcohol only shows up as the beer warms and even then it is subtle. I could drink a few of these if not more and at 8.2 I could be in trouble before I knew it. Not filling and delicious!!! A perfect all season weizenbock. No wonder I bought a case.
