Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Schneider version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.

Dry-hopped w/ Hallertauer Saphir.

L - dark golden orange body, white thick lingering head
S - hops? Piny, grassy notes
T - pine, bitterness
F - little to no carbonation, smooth, light coat
O - I was expecting a banana filled weizenbock and I experienced a double IPA. Really threw me off. Maybe I just got a beer with bad hops. Maybe it got hot cold hot cold on the way here. Different from other weizenbock's I've had in the past.

Pours brown and leaves the same colored body with some red/amber-ish tints around the sides of the weizen glass; just a little bit of lacing; the smell has a large amount of roasted dark wheat with a good amount of dark fruits coming through in a sweet and somewhat "banana" estery sort of way; the flavor is mainly sweet and yeasty with that roasted wheatiness coming back to embolden a lengthy sort of sweetened yet sticky aftertaste and a dry sweet finish, its not as easy on the palate as probably some would like, but hey an 8.2% weizenbock, what does one expect?.... overall, I say this is a great weizenbock that should set the standard for the style.

I was on a short trip to The Bottle Room in Downingtown, PA recently in support of PHL Beer Week 2017 when I saw this bottle on their shelves. I am reluctant to build up the dwindling Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but my efforts have made enough room that I do not feel TOO guilty about its purchase.

From the bottle: "Bottle fermented, brewed according to the Renheitsgebot"; "Schneider & Brooklyner Hopfenweisse is a collaboration between brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler of the result of the Schneider Weissbier Brewery and Garrett Oliver of the Brooklyn Brewery. Garrett and Hans-Peter have long admired each other's beers. Now togetherthey bring you a new sensation, a pale weissbock robustly dry-hopped with the Hallertauer Saphir variety grown in the fields near the Schneider brewery. Hoppy, zesty and supremely refreshing, Schneider & Brooklyner Hopfenweisse is a delicious blend of Bavarian craftsmanship and American ingenuity."

I Pop!ped the cap & having noted that it was bottle fermented (conditioned), I began a very slow, gentle pour so as not to rouse any lees that may have settled. Once enough had been decanted into my awaiting 0.4L stein, I gave it a vigorous in-glass swirl to raise just under two fingers of dense, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with decent retention. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose had a musty, slightly sour quality akin to ripening cheese. Hmmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was rather odd, very earthy with a cheesy, grassy flavor of a soft cheese made from milk where the cow had grazed on both hay and grass. This was very different from what I was expecting, but it lent the beer a real sense of terroir since it was very evocative of its place of origin. I especially liked it since it was not at all sweet, as many Bock-style beers can be. Instead, the hops imparted an earthiness vice a bitterness, allowing the heat of the alcohol to simmer on the tongue. Finish was dry and satiating. One of these & I was ready for a break! Phew.

From decervecitas. In Bavaria glass. Watching Los Soprano 6x12-13. Really refreshing and original, with lots of fresh and addictive grassy, even flowerly, hops that completely hide its high ABV. Great price!

Pours really nicely, with a dense, fluffy head. Hazy, wheaty gold. Nice lacing.

Really interesting nose on this one, like equal parts German wheat beer and American pale ale. Lemon, orange and fruit salad, along with pepper, clove and sweetness. A little soapy and floral.

On the palate, it unfolds pretty similarly with a sticky, wheaty center and lemon, tangerine and spice around the edges. I'm feeling pulled in two different directions. It's almost cloying initially, with the high gravity malt backbone and fruity hops combining. The beer comes together a bit better as it warms and the spiciness of the hops and yeast help to offset the sweet fruitiness.
