AKA: Mein Eisbock Barrique
In 2010 Hans-Peter Drexler started a new project : maturing some of his finest beers in wine barrels. He enjoyed the expertise of brewmaster Jérôme de Rebetez from Brasserie des Franches Montagnes in Switzerland who grew up in a wine producing family. Thus, they created delicious new beer aromes. Mein Eisbock Barrique welcomes you with an intense raspberry, cherry and vanilla aroma. A very rich and harmonious taste of chocolate, vanilla and berries will explode in your mouth leaving a lasting and pleasant after-taste reminding you of good red wine. This beer is recommended with chocolate and red fruit dessert or a blue cheese. however, as it is so powerful that it can easily be enjoyed by its own.
2010: Schneider Aventinus Eisbock matured for 15 months in Pinot Noir Barrels.
2015: Matured in a Saint Emilian Grand Cru classé barrel for 15 months.
2017: Matured in American Oak Pinot Noir Barrels for 21 months.

330ml bottle into a tulip. 2017 vintage.
Look is a bit weird. Deep reddish amber body, head disappears very quickly. There are some small dark floaties, but these quickly sink to the bottom.
Oaky, winey aroma. Pretty nice.
On tasting, well, if you go in expecting a boozy Eisbock, you are going to be disappointed. To be honest, the only real alcohol presence is the warming in the back of the throat. This is a delicious sour with strong oak and red wine notes. There is also a fleeting vanilla taste.
Mouth above medium, finish tart, sour, nice and warming, winey.
Overall, just a delicious beer. Bought as an Eisbock, loved as a sour. Great stuff.

One of the worst beers ever, surprising coming from the home of the regular Aventinus, which might be one of the top 5 beers in the world. It's taking gold and turning it to s***t

Dirty, muddy brown appearance; absolutely no head. Faint smell; veggie-like and spicy; rye. Sour taste; earthy; sorghum and rye. Heavy body; soft and velvety; tart juiciness.
Well, I suppose the brewery more or less hit the mark for what they were after. I certainly get the idea of berries, cherries and pinot noir, and the mouthfeel definitely has the body of a good wheat beer, but taste-wise...I give this beer a higher than the sum of its parts ratings only because the beer's character apparently goes for what the brewer was after. It definitely shoots for a niche market...

Picked up at Julio's I could have sworn I bought this back in 2012. Bottle # 089/688
A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark ruddy garnet hue practically still.
S - Aromas of dirty red wine vinegar. Candy sweet malts and oxidation. Wet cardboard too.
T - Taste is similar to the nose with more of those dirty wine vinegar. Ashes, pencil shavings. I mean, this is just terrible.
M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, and by lightly I mean almost still. And sticky.
O - Overall this was a really terrible beer. Not sure how you can turn base Aventinus to this but just horrible. Such a shame.

Slight bubbly carbonation head more like soap bubbles, long legs, very dark brown color
Nose is weird, super sweet candy syrup malt, some malt and red wine vinegar notes, mild caramel biscuity notes, earthy dirt soil, wet cardboard oxidation and pencil shavings, can't do any more
Taste is pure disappointment, earthy dirt soil with wet cardboard and pencil shavings again, more malt vinegar and wine vinegar, sour like notes, ashy cigarettes tobacco, mild toasted malt but barely, dry slight bitter finish
Mouth is med bod but syrupy almost no carbonation, a little alcohol
Overall just sad, really poor beer

L: clear, brown and almost flat
S: barrel, booze
T: unexpected tart, barrique notes, red wine, some malt sweetness, wineous aftertaste, complex
F: only slightly carbonated, almost oily
O: this is a special treat and very expensive. I do not agree with other reviews that this is like red wine. red wine brings more fruitiness or tannins. however it does have a red wine character but when you focus on the malt sweetness you clearly understand that this is not a red wine. anyway, complex but not a real killer and as a result too expensive.

The 2017 vintage.
Purchased for $24.99 at Arrow Wine. 11.2 oz bottle.
Very wine-like. A sweetish pinot. Too much wine character for me. I like me beer to taste like beer and my wine to taste like wine. Drink this beer with any food you would pair with sweet wine. 2.75
A – Pours a dark amber brown with no carbonation or lacing. Dark but clear. A huge quantity of dregs in the bottom of this one. 3.75
S – Vinous aromas, the pinot barrels are clearly evident, some slight sweetness and faint pepperiness. 3.25
T – Tastes like a wine. Too sweet. Some oxidized, old ale characteristics. 2.75
MF – Medium body with a semi-dry finish. Smooth with no carbonation. 3.0
