Carlsberg Danmark A/S

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Carlsberg Elephant is a so-called ’Bock Bier’, brewed for the first time in 1959. The ample use of malt gives Carlsberg Elephant a vinous and rich character with apple, melon, banana, and caramel flavours balanced with a dry bitterness and hints of oak, bark, nuts and pine needles. The colours is pale gold with white foam.

The elephants on the beer’s label are inspired by the two pair life-size elephant statues, which form part of the main entrance to the Carlsberg Group’s headquarters in Copenhagen.

Freebie from the neighbor. Not even sure where in the hell he got ahold of this brew, but I'm not here to ask questions. I'm here to review. Sight-reviewed on the spot so it likely won't be all that long.

Look - Into a generic kitchen glass from a twelve ounce bottle. Pours a straw golden with a big frothy white head that makes me stop and them continue the pour a few times. Head eventually drops to a thickenes froth atop the yellow body and it leaves some initial soapy although sticky lacing upon the top of the glass. Carbonation appears to be surprisingly low.

Smell - You know this is a Euro Lager from the second is makes its way through your nostrils. Pale malts very bready like in nature with a tinge of alcohol. Bready with an odd though not necessarily bad wheat going on.

Taste - The light malts come through in a cheap grocery store breadyness. The alcohol surprisingly doesn't make an appearance despite the fact it wasn't brewed to mask it. Very basic, though lacking skunk so it is quite tolerable.

Feel - Body tosses off a bit of the alcoholic presence though it certainly isn't bothersum. Light to medoum depending on beer temperature with a low level of carbonation.

Overall - Actually quite a bit better than I had expected. On par with if not better than the higher ABV American adjuncts. Could easily drink a few of these.

Appearance – The body is light orange and crystal clear with a nice, big foaming head that went down slowly and laced the glass well.

Smell – This really does smell like an elephant. The sharp grainy aroma is there along with some gut-wrenching alcohol notes, but there’s also a stank that smells like BO meets the elephant cage.

Taste – Oh, God, is this horrible. I guess I could try to describe the grain and small hops, but the BO dominates everything. This tastes like somebody’s rotten feet.

Mouthfeel – This one was actually a bit on the creamy side.

Drinkability – Sorry, I’d like to think of something positive to say but this stuff is horrible.

A- The appearance is decent with a heavy orange hue that glows in the light. Small foamy head settle to a ferment like top on the beer leaving nice lacing from top to bottom.

S- No frills smell, with obvious estery alcohol notes. Light scents of malts and maybe alittle yeast.

T-M- Heavy flavors of alcohol ands malts hits the tongue first, this is then followed by light tones of hoppy bite and dry yeasty taste.
Medium body, but quite hard with the amount of alcohol in this one.

D- Drinkable on occation if you need a beer for the buzz and dont want to go for a malt liquer deal. A-Ok with me.

i like the cloudy appearance of this beer, it's also pretty smooth. 11.2 ounces is obviously not as good as 12 ounces but with the ABV at 7.2% it more than makes up for it.

When I was first of drinking age, Carlsberg Elephant was considered an exotic and potent beer, which may have been a fair assessment when compared with the other beers available at the time. This bottle was poured into a cylinder glass. It pours a light golden straw color with very thin, bright white head and minimal lacing. Swishing the glass produced more lacing. The smell is mostly bready malt and floral hops. The taste is basically bready with a dry hops and a slight toffee or caramel sweetness at the finish. This lager has a fairly light feel and the 7.2% ABV is barely noticeable. in an age of craft beer with high ABV. Overall, this is a rather bland lager. There is nothing special about it. I could see drinking it at a party or at a bar if nothing else is available but I wouldn't seek it out.

Presentation: It was poured from a green 11.2oz bottle into a pint glass. The label lists the abv at 7.2% abv.

Appearance: The body has a deep yellow color with good clarity and some visible carbonation. On top it sports a bright white fluffy head of foam. It quickly settled down to a wispy thin film covering. Lacing is minimal and slick.

Smell: It has a nice bready and grainy maltiness in the nose. It smells sweet with a mild floral hop note for balance.

Taste / Palate: The flavor has a light cereal grain sweetness with some mild grassy and floral hops in the finish. I had a old bottle so I didn't get much in the way of any harshness from the higher abv. The feel is smooth and full with just enough carbonation.

11.5 oz brown twist off bottle with no freshness date, this sample was brewed in Canada by Labatt. Thin creamy looking lace, very mild haze within the orange golden brew.

Clean solvent alcohol aroma with an underlying cloying sweetness and a rough graininess.

Pretty smooth with a moderate body and light carbonation. Thick husky grain flavour comes to the taste buds as the alcohol sneaks in with its solvent warmth. Faded hops in the back, sweet start to middle then the graininess and alcohol kick in and throws down a lightly astringently dry finish.

Bit more malt than the usual American malt liquor but still thin, not much to taste … it is more or less a beer that has a kick and sadly that is its greatest attribute.

330mL bottle from Denmark, best before 05/05/05, it's a bit after that but 7.2% abv, should be all right.

Appearance: Doesn't pour with much head and what is there dissipates fast. A small amount of lacing. Gold/orange colour with very few bubbles escaping.

Smell: Pretty ordinary alcohol smell very evident, subtle hops, not much else. Smells like I'm about to drink it and don't care that much.

Taste: Smooth but strong, no efforts to hide the 7.2% abv. Sweet on the palate, again unsubtle. Hops aren't especially tastable here, except in the mild global bitterness. I'll drink it, it's not too bad, but nothing too great at all.

Mouthfeel: Flat and rough. Pretty dodgy actually - not designed to stay in the mouth or in the glass long. Interesting, in fact, for its conspicuously poor effect on the tongue.

Drinkability: In spite of its commonness, it's OK to drink, especially if you're with a large group of footy fans at an inner city English pub. Goes down pretty easy, and isn't here to be savoured. A temporary beer.

This "malt liquor " pours a very slightly hazed , golden color , with a half inch of whit foam sitting atop. The smell is a little malty , some light struck aroma , maybe the slightest tinge of floral hop and some alcohol. The taste is also of slightly malty grain , some warming alcohol , and a touch of balancing hop. This is a drinkable brew that definatly packs a punch , but it's kind of one dimensional and thin. Goes down easy enough , but it nothing that special in my book.

It looks good for the color, which is golden with a nice thick head. The smell is by far nothing to write home about with only hints of the ingredients. The taste is mediocre as it gets which seems to me it would be a Canadian light beer, but it does taste like a beer. Another mediocre on the feel too. It goes down smooth so there is another positive. Assessment: drink this beer if you want to play a drinking game in Denmark, but save your money in being a beer condenser.

L: brilliant burnished brass with rapidly rising bubbles under a 1.5" ivory foam cap with good retention

S: It is in a green bottle and is not skunky. Instead, bread crumb, Nobel hops, some earthy spice and alcohol.

T: mildly sweet with cracker and traces of bread dough, faint green apple and a trace of fruit. Mildly assertive bitterness, alcohol.

F: Smooth medium bodied beer with medium carbonation

O: flavorful with substance but is a little boozy which throws it out of balance

euro pale lagers and american pale lagers don't tend to taste too good when they have high abv. The Carlsberg Elephant coming in at 7.2% is a high abv for a pale lager and that abv is not hidden well which is a bad thing. I am not a big fan of Carlsberg lager to begin with. I think it has a not so pleasant aftertaste, but hey that's just my opinion. At least they put a best by date on the bottle. Cheers! C-
