Style: Euro Strong Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Carlsberg Elephant is a so-called ’Bock Bier’, brewed for the first time in 1959. The ample use of malt gives Carlsberg Elephant a vinous and rich character with apple, melon, banana, and caramel flavours balanced with a dry bitterness and hints of oak, bark, nuts and pine needles. The colours is pale gold with white foam.

The elephants on the beer’s label are inspired by the two pair life-size elephant statues, which form part of the main entrance to the Carlsberg Group’s headquarters in Copenhagen.

euro pale lagers and american pale lagers don't tend to taste too good when they have high abv. The Carlsberg Elephant coming in at 7.2% is a high abv for a pale lager and that abv is not hidden well which is a bad thing. I am not a big fan of Carlsberg lager to begin with. I think it has a not so pleasant aftertaste, but hey that's just my opinion. At least they put a best by date on the bottle. In my critique if your beer is getting anything less than a C (75-79) score range that is a bad thing. Cheers! For this one let's go with a C- (70-74) score range

Poured from a green 330ml bottle into glass. Label includes the information that the beer is "Brewed and Bottled by Carlsberg Breweries in Fredericia Denmark".
Body is a clear, medium gold. Fluffy white head settles to cap and islands. Some patches of lacing.
Aroma is sweet with grain and corn, and somewhat spicy hops.
Taste is similar to the nose but includes the booze note. Rather dry finish.
Thinner mouth feel, with carbonation and alcohol on the tongue.
Made to intoxicate at a rapid pace. I remember drinking this in Copenhagen in the mid '70's, and the rapid buzz; this was high ABV for that era.

When I bought this it was after I had the regular Carlsberg and was hoping that the one with the elephant would be a different style or type for them. Basically it was the same exact beer in flavor and in body than the regular Carlsberg, I was disappointed by this very much.

A: crystal clear; deep gold in color; 1 finger ivory head that receded to a very thin cap; very nice lacing;

S: corn, grain, mildly sweet;

T: follows the nose with the addition of some caramel; unfortunately, that caramel turns metallic in the middle; by the mildly bitter finish, the metallic character is dominant;

M: medium bodied; light to moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: with what little I know about this style, I was expecting the alcohol to be hot, but it was barely noticeable;

L: brilliant burnished brass with rapidly rising bubbles under a 1.5" ivory foam cap with good retention

S: It is in a green bottle and is not skunky. Instead, bread crumb, Nobel hops, some earthy spice and alcohol.

T: mildly sweet with cracker and traces of bread dough, faint green apple and a trace of fruit. Mildly assertive bitterness, alcohol.

F: Smooth medium bodied beer with medium carbonation

O: flavorful with substance but is a little boozy which throws it out of balance

This better than I expected, Nice white head, not much lacing and a slight boozy finish. After all 7.2 % is malt liquor territory.
This is not as sweet as others I have tried in this ABV range.
I would not try this again, but it is not terrible and undrinkable.

Never drink anything out of a green bottle. Holy crap. I don't have a recent basis of comparison, but right now I would state this is worst beer I have ever had

Pours a light bronzed copper color. Clear and reasonably crisp in appearance. Thin white head dissipates steadily leaving a thin layer of spotty bubbly foam along the top of the beer.

Smell has notes of grainy malt, melon, corn, alcohol and a overly sweet aroma.

Taste follows the nose with some grain, melon sweetness, harsh alcohol and an overarching cloying sweetness.

Feel is heavy, especially from the sweetness. Alcohol burn on the back end. Drinks like an overly heavy AAL, with far too much alcohol.

This is a rough beer - I barely finished one, and I wouldn't drink it again.

Pours a hazy straw color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of strong Euro yeast, adjunct, alcohol, pale malt, and a hint of sweet malt. Fits the style of a Euro Strong Lager. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong Euro yeast, adjunct, alcohol, pale malt, and sweet malt. Overall, good appearance, better body than aroma, and decent feel.
