Update: I visited July 5th, 2005. This was my first trip here in many months. I must say this place might be on its way out of Beerfly. The selection was awful/painfully average with its selection of craft beer and much more space was devoted to Malternatives and BMC. I’ll visit around Thanksgiving and if the selection is just as lousy I will request removal from BA. This store went downhill… sadly. Avoid for now…

Super Saver is a no-frills grocery store. I visit this place regularly for beer even though it is on the other side of town. The selection is very reliable. New Belgium, Boulevard, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Leinenkugel, Redhook, Odell’s, Rogue, Empyrean, Spilker Ales, and a few other domestic craft beer odds and ends. Imports are limited, Samuel Smith, Celebrator, Orval, Chimay, and few others. They do a good job at carrying seasonal releases… they seem to sell very fast. Plus they always have something good on-sale. (For example, Boulevard seems to always be on-sale for less that $6.00 a six-pack). Oh yeah, everything is in one big-ass walk-in cooler. Turn over is good.

Help is nonexistent.

For a grocery store the selection is definitely notable. I probably buy more beer here than any other liquor store.

I have been getting my beer from this Super Saver for a few years now. I go there because they have a huge selection for a grocery store, the quality of the beer is always good, and the price is very reasonable compared to other grocery stores and spirits shops.

Concerning selection, they have the most variety out of any grocery store. You can chose between 24 and 30 packs of cheap macro's or select single bottles of imports like Samual Smith and Sapporo, and also micro's from around the country like Rogue based in Oregon. It's nice and convenient to be able to pick up your beer while grocery shopping as opposed to going out of the way to a spirits shop.

Concerning freshness, they have one of the largest walk in refrigeration unit's I've seen. They even have their 30-packs like Old Milwaukee at $12.88 in this cooler! I think it speaks volumes when their cheap beers rest in luxury. I have never seen or bought a beer form Super Saver that has been beyond its best by date.

Concerning Price, you just can't beat it. Compared to other grocery stores like Hy Vee and Bakers, they are consistently priced about 10-15% under on just about all selections. Compared to spirit shops they are underpriced at least that amount. I think it''s a matter of sales volume, buying power, and distribution channels that allow them to underprice their competitors. Additionally to this, just about every week they have an inredible on one of their beers, sometimes its cheap macro's and sometimes a higher quality micro.

This was the first stop on my just-completed GOBST (Greater Omaha Beer Store Tour).

Super Saver is a large bulk-foods type grocery store that every city seems to have. The selection was pretty decent I thought. I gave the shelves a once-over and then walked into the cooler. That had to be the 'coolest' cooler that I've ever been in, I'm surprised that the stock doesn't freeze. I spent about 5 minutes in there and had to leave before hypothermia overtook me.

The cooler contained selections such as Breckinridge, Flying Dog, Leinenkugel's, Celebrator Dopplebock, Orval, Chimay Red/Blue, Samuel Smith's and one Rogue (Shakespeare Stout in bombers), all of which I can get near home. They also had 3 varieties of Spilker (only $3.98 for the 32 ounce bottles which is the cheapest that I found), Empyrean and some New Belgium, none of which are available in Des Moines. Final purchase: Spilker Hopalleuia and XPO stout.

Service is 'grocery store average', which is to say serviceable at best. The check-out lady was very pleasant though. Good points include selection, COLD beer and low prices. I could see frequenting this place if I lived in the area.
