(500 ml can, best by 23.08.2020; purchased cold single at Monde... split poured between fluted goblet and a 14 oz mug)

L: polished-clear, glowing 24k gold colored liquid; dense, lasting sponge of off-white foam, initially forming a lovely dimpled mound above the rim-line, but collapsing into a misty collar, with some sparkly streaks of lace...

S: ridiculously bready, almost tangible crumb, golden glossy crust; soft floral-herbal hop essence, subtle phenolic spice... superb intensity, expression

T: 'complex' underbelly of grain, dough, bread, and grassy herbal static bitter; in a bizarre twist, the top half of the sip is the dry portion, with only a bit of toast and peppery spice fumes left behind; to me very bizarre... after the second sip, palate attuned, a dry sugar cookie malt lingers in the aftertaste, slight bubblegum ester, pungent leafy bitterness threading the middle

F: plush, foamy wash over the palate; subtle back-end bitter/warm glow... bit of residual oily/resiny film left over; subtly slow, sluggish finish; overall has substance, but light enough to forget you're drinking it

O: while I do love my helles and pils, this type of golden German lager seems to be my heart... its relatively-low overall rating is a bit disappointing - it's a bit sedate, but a damn fine beer (1535)

Light golden in color with a persistent, white, frothy head.

Medium-light grainy-sweet malt aroma with a medium floral and spicy hop aroma. Very light sulfur and DMS on the nose.

Medium malty grainy-sweet flavor will-balanced with the spicy and floral hop flavor. Balance continues into the finish with a slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Slight papery oxidation initially.

Medium bodied, with moderate carbonation, no alcohol warmth, creamy texture, and no astringency.

Overall a firmly malty-bodied beer with a well-balanced hop flavor. To avoid oxidation, prevent oxygen from getting into the beer post-fermentation, including avoiding splashing while bottling. Checks caps and keg seals for goos fit. Store beer cool and serve while fresh.

16oz can, Zipfer glass. Slightly cloudy golden yellow body, two finger white head, good retention, bits of lacing. Smell is a bit of crisp biscuit and bread, fair bit of mineral. Not much else there on the nose or palate. It's fine, it's non-offensive, certainly. Light biscuit, a bit bready, but not much in way of a noble hop presence, thin and watery, really nothing much to remark on. Lighter bodied, watery, lingering biscuit sweetness on the finish. Almost tastes like boring malt water- drinkable but without discernible character.

Can dated 6/7/2018, BB 6/10/2019. Dimpled mug.

A: pours a brassy yellow-gold with one finger white head that quickly recedes. Some lingering carbonation, but not much.

S: not getting much on the nose. Usually with lagers I can at least get lager yeast or malt. At best here I am getting a little stewed corn or creamed corn.

M: thick, malty mouthfeel, with a crisp, wet, attenuated finish. Hefty but refreshing if that makes any sense. Low carbonation for a lager.

T: this is where this one really falls apart. I don’t know if it’s age, or what, but this is not pleasant. Arrives like any plain old yellow fizzy lager, slightly sweet, kind of bready. There is a weird soapy, artificial quality to it on mid palate. Finishes clean, without much character, and only the faintest hint of that weird taste.

O: I love GLBC’s Dortmunder Gold, and Thirsty Dog’s Dortmunder, but this is really underwhelming. It just tastes like a mass produced lager that happens to be from Germany. And is about eight months past its prime.

First time trying this style and I feel like it matches the description very well. Not a lot of hop character. Has a semi-sweet malty tone. A pretty good beer.

Reviewed as part of BJCP training, 5C German Helles Exportbier. Best before 8/08/19

pours a nice pillowy foamy 1/2 finger head, dense with great retention, nice lacing, crystal clear deep gold color with mild floaties

Nose fair malty-sweet grain not too far from typical Helles, toasted malts, sweet grain but smooth, very faint sulfury note that dissipates, and hint of hops, mild DMS corn that seems to increase a bit maybe a bit too present, turning into a little doughy malt

Taste some malty-sweet toasted pils malts, quickly into some grassy floral hops with mild bitterness that increases, fair balance between the two, also a very mild DMS character again from the heavy pilsner malts, and a touch of background minerals, finishing with a bit more spicy floral, lingering bitterness, hops get a little crisp likely due to the sulfates

Mouth is med bod, moderate to a little higher carb, smooth malt feel

Overall not bad, an interesting beer, somewhere between the malty rich helles and hop notes of German pils, but with higher DMS levels on the nose, otherwise not bad, but not as enjoyable as either of the other two styles by themselves, and seems to lack that malt depth of like Weihenstephan Original Helles, maybe less of the decoction mashing

Another college throwback, haven't had it since graduation. I do recall that I liked it, it wasn't the best beer I drank but it was better than average at that time. It rates as average, hence the 3.o rating.

Crystal clear polished brass with a sturdy white foam boasting good lacing.

Bread and grass from the glass. Not much mote to elaborate on the aroma.

The flavor starts with sweet white bread but quickly changes into a mineral water flavor that doesn't leave. Kind of metallic or alkaline. The faintest suggestion of floral hops in the finish.

This thing is so dry and champagne like bubbly. I'd say it's well balanced but if it did lean to a side it would be sweet. That carbonation though.. very tingling.

I haven't had the pleasure of DABbing into the Dortmunder style. As a fan of Helles and Pilsners, I think I can get on board here. Looking forward to trying others, but I think this might be a great baseline to start from. Prost.

Decent Euro that's priced right. Old school lager, not over the top ALC. It's not difficult to find a craft or import priced 3 or more times higher that's not nearly as good

16 oz. can poured into a pint glass. Pour is a clear medium straw in color with a light white cap. Nice bubbling up of gas keeps a light cap throughout. Nose of pils malt with a bit more backbone/body. Light hop presence. Taste follows with a full bodied pilsener sense with some sweet malt notes and a bit of lemon on the finish. Malt character yields a fairly full body for a 5% brew and befitting of the style.

The most mass market and hence most industrial produced brew in the DAB catalogue. When judged against this metric, it’s actually pretty good!

Decent if uninspired pale euro lager. Eminently crushable. Price per can ratio is always inviting.

500 ml can
Served in a pokal glass

This beer pours a brilliant golden color and is topped with two inches of fluffy, white head that settles to a skim leaving some lacing.

I get some biscuit and bread aroma and not much else.

It has a crisp, clean taste. It doesn't have a lot of flavor, but I can pick up some light grain notes and even a slight bitterness in the finish.

Moderate to thin mouthfeel

This is a super easy drinker. It is clean, and I could drink these all day. It's a very solid German standard.

From the tall boy can in a pint glass. This old classic pours a clear pale yellow
with a nice head of white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin pool, and features
some nice light lacing. Nose of light pilsner malts and subtle grains. Flavors
lightly exceed the nose but not enough to budge the rating with lightly sweet pilsner
malts and light grains with mild hop notes. Nice mouth feel, crisp, clean, and lightly
sweet, Overall a fine brew for after mowing the lawn....or a good one to prime the
pump with.

Pours a clear crisp effervescent golden straw color. Thick frothy white head dissipates somewhat, but leaves plenty of foam and lacing.

Smell is a bit subdued but notes of bread, a floral almost herbal hop character is noted and a hint of skunk.

Taste follows the nose with a nice balance of bread and cracker malts and pilsner like floral hops. Nice mild bitterness on the finish with some notes of sweetness throughout. Dry finish.

Feel was crisp but the sweetness added a bit of heaviness to the beer. Very drinkable with nice medium carbonation.

Overall a really nice Dortmunder export. Great beer for the price.

A little bit deeper yellow than most AALs, but lacking a head formation that sticks around, swells up, falls down, all very quickly. Aroma just comes off metallic.

Taste has some noble hops, loads of carbonation on top of a light body. Mild skunk flavors. I can't really discern the difference between a Euro lager/pilsner and this dortmunder lager. All seems similar.

Stuff is kind of expensive for what you get, doesn't really offer much different than say Heineken or Beck's if you ask me.

Ah what can I say about this beer. It has a golden color with a nice white head. Smells of vegetables to me, slightly hard to smell. Not enjoyable of a scent. It has a bitter flavor but too much carbonation for me. I just find this beer to be kind of cheap tasting and not enjoyable.

Eveyone speaks to this beer with long descriptions. For those who drink beer as a session option, as well as enjoy the finer beers. I find this beer falls in the Old Standard level. It's not good enough to bring to a party to impress, but it's good enough to enjoy with visitors as a "way better then Coors" I love the fact that it's CHEAP, and not made with rice "Purity Laws". I never get a hangover, and it always go down smooth. Great fishing beer.

One of the cheapest beers I could get when I was living in Toronto. Was surprised to later learn of its storied history. Indistinguishable from it's peers in price range among varying styles. Nothing about this beer separates itself from other bargain import pilsners or lagers. Comparing it to something like Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold .. it should be embarrassed, hide in a corner and slit it's wrists.

That being said, for the price of it, it wasn't horrible. It is drinkable but it has a really wierd off flavor and a bad aftertaste.

This beer is readily available at my local Binnys. It is sold in 6 pack pints for $6.00. A great value in *decent* quality beer. Plus, the packaging in a can almost insures that it will be fresh! Poured into a pint glass it creates rich, full head, typical of the style, and retains it for a great deal of the session. Lacing is decent as well. It very clear in appearance, with a bright, white head, very 'frothy', and exhibits decent carbonation. Drinking the beer while it still sports it's head allows for the greatest flavor. Overall good, hoppy flavor, almost exotic as you would get from like a Konig Pils, but not quite as strong and rich. It finishes kind of weak, but still good making a strong session brew in where you can drink 4 or 5 of these pints with no real problems. Overall it definitely has all the trademarks of a common, good quality German Lager, not as good as Spaten's Lager, but close, but the price is outstanding making it a great value. A buck a pint for home consumption is great, don't you think?

Appearance - poured from a 16 fl oz/500ml can into a 16 oz weizenglass, this beer pours an extremely clear golden straw color with 2 fingers of white foamy head that receed to a film over the top of the beer after 5 mins. Carbonation seems average, It looks pretty good in the glass.

Aroma - Spicy floral hops, buscuit/grainy malts, that clean fresh spring water smell you get from most lagers.

Taste - spicy and floral hops are at the for front of this beer with a light but sharp bitterness, they are followed by cracker like grainy malts and then it finishes dry with that clean lager flavor, very smooth.

Feel - Mouth feel is light and watery, which is kind of expected of a lager the carbonation does give a nice refreshing tingle and the beer goes down dry.

Overall - This was my first dortmunder lager but the style guidelines seem simple enough to follow without that much experience. It personally isn't my favorite style but judging it objectively it is much better than an AAJ, It has more flavor and the same crisp clean lawnmower feel. The bitterness seems abit strong for the guidelines but I liked it and If the choice was budweiser or dab, I would take the dab all day. Cheers!

16 oz can poured into a proper DAB glass. After all these years, finally getting some use out of my DAB glass!

Pale gold in color and crystal clear with a white head that shows decent retention. Light, herbal, spicy hops in the aroma with grainy malts. Sweet malt flavor initially with some hop bitterness providing great balance. Incredibly clean and smooth. Medium-light body.

No off-flavors whatsoever in this beer. To be honest, my expectations were low considering the 6-pack of 16 oz cans cost $5.99 and it is brewed with hop extract (as listed on the side of the can), but it's hard to find any faults with this beer, other than it being a little "normal." Perfect for keeping your fridge stocked and hits the spot when you need a clean, German brew.
