Had this on-tap at Brauhaus

A - Very rich ruby brown body, dark and inviting. Small cream head atop this solid mug of beer.

S - Roasty sweet malts and dark sugars are in the nose. This beer smells rich and malty sweet. Some dark dried fruits and dark sugar/molasses are present.

T - This beer tastes much like it smells. The flavor is very rich and complex. Delicious darkness of malt, brown sugar, mollasses, dark caramel, dried dark fruits like figs and prunes.

M - Like most malty beers this has a very smooth mouthfeel. It's rich and full of flavor but free of a heavy syruppy body. Perfectly carbonated.

D - I really love dark beers, malty beers, double bocks etc so I can down this style. But for anyone, this beer is easy to drink, its just so smooth and soft and the taste alone will have it sliding down.

Notes - I passed over this one for a long while at my favorite spot and am completely regretfull I did. I really like this beer alot and suggest it to anyone.

On tap at Max's the other day. A new beer they had just gotten in.

The beer pours a brownish amber color with fair head retention and lacing. The beer has an interesting aroma of brown sugar, chocolate and cardboard. In fact the cardboard aroma is really pretty pronounced. On the palate, this beer is pretty delicious, with flavors of brown sugar and sweet malt. The beer seems a bit too gassy out of the tap, but still has plenty of flavor and is very enjoyable. There's almost a sugar-butter flavor to this beer, which adds to the attraction (the sweet malt flavor is not excessive). The beer has a medium bodied mouthfeel and is pretty smooth on the palate. Abv. is fairly well disguised, and drinkability is likewise pretty good.

An interesting new beer. Not bad at all.

Dark apricot orange with bright Sunkist borders and a two finger cap of buttered toast colored foam. The head develops some interesting surface topography as it melts, and leaves enough lace for the appearance to qualify as good overall.

The nose clearly belongs to a doppelbock. It's steely caramel-like and nutty, with plenty of power. This might be the best brew yet from Brauerei Hofstetten Krammer.

Granitbock isn't as solid as a block of granite, but it's enjoyable beer if you like the style. It (slightly) favors the darker end of the doppelbock spectrum, while retaining quite of a bit of the toasted and earthy qualities of the lighter end. Good mix for those who can't decide where their preferences lie.

Flavors include steely caramel, lightly sugared pecans, black tea leaves, and an earthy-herbal hoppiness that provides an ideal amount of countering bitterness. The search for negatives has come up empty. This semi-big lager is growing on me with each passing ounce, so the higher taste score will be chosen in the end.

The body/mouthfeel could be a mite bigger, although that probably borders on nitpicking. Lightly stinging bubbles add a welcome amount of mouth energy without stepping over the line into buzzy and annoying.

Granitbock, in my humble opinion, is the single best beer these guys brew. Granted, I've only had three offerings from them so far. If you're a big fan of Deutsch Doppels, then $4.99 isn't too much to spend on 500 ml of medium-dark, mostly malty, bittersweet enjoyment.

Rich dark fruit bock, enjoyed at right temperature at Dunderbanks new location in Tampa. Old ale aroma, thick caramel, reddish dark colour, above average mouthfeel. Sweetish, sugary,for drinking, but not cloying. There is a secondary hop.This is bock, baby!

Clear brown colored beer with next to no head formation.

Smells sweet. Scents of malt nuts and grass. Fair scent of molasses. Smells fairly woody and has a strong tea aroma.

Starts out sweet with a taste of tobacco. Medium level of bitterness and some nuts, it has a very clean finish for the style.

Mouthfeel is good.

Tasty and user friendly Bock beer this is worth a taste.

16.9oz bottle purchased at Village Spirit Shoppe in Storrs, CT.

Poured into an imperial pint glass Chimay chalice, formed a 1/4" beige head over the cloudy orangey brown brew. Head quickly falls to an uneven layer of bubbles, with average lacing at best. Aroma is sweet, with tannins and alcohol apparent. Taste follows the nose pretty well, with the tannins blossoming and bringing out an impression amount of complexity. Mouthfeel is reasonably smooth, and drinkability is good. Not quite what I was hoping for, but a good brew.

Appearance: Pours a hazy russet color with a rocky tan head; excellent stickage and lacing action

Smell: Caramel, figs, hazelnuts and toasted brown bread

Taste: Caramel and toasted brown bread, up front, with the figs and hazelnuts adding another dimension in the middle; nicely balanced through the finish with some tobacco in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; somewha creamy with moderate carbonation

Overall: A really nice example of the style, even after over two years in the bottle; not as sweet and fruity as some but very easy to drink

Guess I'll never learn. Opened a gusher near my desktop. Luckily a mess everywhere except the pc.Poured with a smallish tan head that settle to a light cover which lasted and a little lace. Aroma is toffee, malt, a little molasses and dark ripe fruit. Flavor's like aroma and very malty sweet. Of course with a beer this sweet the body is very full and thick with good carbonation. Finish is like flavor and of medium to long duration with a bit of alcohol at the end.

Pours a deep ruby red with a smattering of eggshell head. Aromas of deep caramelized fruits and bread with some earth tones. Slightly spicy in the nose as well.

Sweet caramelized malts alongside a cornucopia of fruit accents. A touch of tobacco and spiciness. Deep malt body abounds. Smooth finish with a touch of lingering sweetness.

Medium bodied and mellow carbonation. Pretty tasty brew and intriguing how it is brewed with red hot granite. Glad to be able to try it, thanks Dave!

Appearance: Dropped off to my table a hazed, deep dark brown body topped with a full, foaming, tan-colored head.

Smell: Fruity, malty nose, combining scents of baked apples and pureed raisins with notes of bread and caramel with a spray bottle spritz of clean alcohol.

Taste: The taste is alive with a dark breadiness smoothed over with well-caramelized sugars. Smidgen of roast. Deep, delicately tart fruitiness carries over from the nose. Slight, growing chocolate presence as it warms. Very restrained hop character and bitterness. Touch of warming alcohol presence on the fruity, sweetly malty, smooth finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Very slight chewiness to the overall mouthfeel.

Drinkability: No trouble here finishing my portion. A fine, upstanding bock, providing you like'm sweet and malty.

How cool is that?

A: Dark, muddy brown with a light tan head, thin ring of retention subsides but leaves a little leg.

S: Dark caramel, raisins, brown sugar, light spicing and a hint of cherry-like tartness.

T: Plenty of dark caramel (a little much), brown sugar, dark toffee, earthy mineral, cherries, nuts, raisins, rum, light smoky spicing, modest bitterness, warming alcohol.

M: Fairly full body has plenty of residual sweetness, with a slightly drying alcohol finish.

D: Decent, but for some reason I expected a little more.

Murky, ruby color with barely any head or foam, but has a little bubbling.

The aroma is full of fruity and sweet bready malts. I get prunes, some wood fiber, and chalky yeast with alcohol.

Super rich malt bomb upfront. Toasted malt, and an awesome yeast give the palate a great swirl of depp roasted cereal and bread grains. Flavors of plums and prunes, with a little black cherry abound. A little alcoholic warmth and a soft, yet syrupy palate finish it off. The finish does have a slight, too earthy flavor. It takes away from the depth of malt flavors.

Saw this obscure import thinking it was a going to be smoky, like the other Steinbier i've had, Rauchenfelser.

Tawny ruby brown, a decent finger of head stays on the surface for awhile. Soon after it fades into a ring at the edge with patchy skim. A swirl brings back the coverage momentarily.

Sweet brown sugar and caramel aroma. Very malty and only mildly toasty. The flavor follows suit, big brown sugary doppel flavors with little in the way of smoked flavor. It's chewy, rich, and supple with a mild apple flavor from the yeast. Not bad to try, it's a little too sweet for me to return to over drier Doppelbocks like Asam-Bock and Celebrator.

Another find on my trek to Tampa. This is a doppelbock brewed with a heated stone. Interesting.
Normal caramel color, a hint darker than most doppels. Carbonation is pretty small, however that's also the case with many others (but not all).
The flavor profile on this brew is about as malty and sweet as you can imagine. It's bold even for a doppelbock. Caramel, dark breads, a hint of fruitiness, but not too much. Are there hops in there? They're definitely hiding. It starts off as pretty amazing with the first sip, but it then starts to become a little too much and cloying.
Mouthfeel is sticky and sweet, but the little carbonation keeps it from being a mess.
Not bad, but not really all that great. If you like sweet beers, this is definitely a good example. The caramelization of the malt adds a bit of character, but it needs some balance in there or maybe a variety of malts like Ayinger uses would do it well.
This beer sounds better than it is. It's a middle of the pack really sweet doppelbock.

Edit: Got a chance to try this again and still found it to be sweet, but with an odd mineral/iron character going on, too. Not terrible, and probably less sweet than I remembered...but still nothing special at all.

smell: huge bock aromas - caramel, toffee, massive caramelized malts

taste: hmm a "stone bier", white-hot granite dropped into the wort. the result is a massive body with burnt toffee, caramel, and smoke punching you in the face. i found this one a bit much after a huge dinner but it was rather interesting

mouthfeel: gummy, full bodied

drinkability: a bit challenging

Pours an obscured chestnut with 2 fingers of pillowy cream colored head. Many floaties, good lacing, above average head reteention

S: Figs & brown bread

T: Follows the nose, herbal/leafy hops, faint dark cherry flavor as well up front. More figs, caramel, brown bread & woody hops as this warms, along with some tobacco notes. Finishes figgy with a touch of cherry &dryness

MF: Chewy, slight carbonation

A good dopple, but I believe this isn't in top condition, still very drinkable

Poured into a Celebrator glass. Body is a hazy, amber/ruby with a short, quickly dispersing tan head that leaves no lacing. (the 2nd pour results in an almost 2-finger, fluffy head)
The smell is light alcohol, toasted malt and yeasty bread.
The taste is almost all malt with a light sweetness and dark bread.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied & flat as in almost no carbonation.
Drinkability: Better than many doppelbocks yet can't reach the heights of the best. It's good and easy to drink without any complexity.

A- Pours into my tulip a murky mahogany/walnut wood color, with a half finger head. Poor retention, and nothing left behind in the glass.

S- Fairly nice burnt sugar complexity, deep malts, dark fruit. Fairly standard doppelbock aroma, but nothing in particular to write about.

F- Unfortunately that falls apart a little on the palate. Flavors are thin and insipid, but what is there is dark raisins, a bit of minerality (flinty/iron) that I assume is coming from the granite. Finish is a great big wallop of diacetyl...

M- thin, undercarbonated

D- I likely won't finish the bottle.

It was interesting to try, and I'd try another "stone" beer, but the underlying bock has to be a little better to begin with. Not worth the price of admission ($5.49) for sure....

Pours a cloudy, dense brown color with an average size off white head and average retention. A little lacing.Smells great. Sweet caramel malt and some dark fruit.

Taste is very good.Sweet caramel malt, dark fruit, toffee. Everything perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not at all cloying.

Mouthfeel is rich, sweet with a little hop bite at the end. Not quite the meal in a glass of some Dopplebocks

Drinkability is great.I could have had a lot more of this.

Single bottle purchased at the venerable Charleston Beer Exchange.

Probably served around 50 degrees in my Ayinger D-bock glass.

This beer TRIED to gush forth as I popped the cap (not a good sign for a doppelbock...) but I was faster than Mustachio and dumped it into my glass where it puffed up a decent reddish head that faded away after a minute. The beer is very red-amber.

Smells okay, but just okay... sweet caramel, prune, some hints of malt interesting-ness. Lacks the malt depth of a truly great doppelbock as well as the bold aromas, but this covers all the bases and is not really flawed...

Taste is average as well. Maybe a bit above average. Decent depth of malt with burnt sugar / toffee notes, some dark fruit (mostly prune), and some alcohol, but alas! there's nothing really here to keep you coming back. It lacks subtlety and finesse, and that's hard to describe, but if you drink this next to Ayinger you'll immediately see the difference. Granitbock finishes strangely dry and mouth-coating, and is rather ungainly. Carbonation level is quite high, unusual.

Reading the previous reviews, I suspect there are QC issues with this beer. Mine was highly carbonated and had a fine, encompassing level of fizz that is quite odd for this sort of beer.

I really wanted to like Granitbock, what with being from Austria and a Steinbier and all. A pity you cannot win them all - Granitbock is decent, but for the price is difficult to recommend.

500ml bottle served in a Blvd. Tank 7 Tulip. Poured a reddish brown with a finger of tan head. Aroma of caramel malt and molasses. Medium bodied, malty. Maybe a bit thin for a doppel. Some dark fruit and caramelized sugar. Quite metallic in the finish. Very disappointing.

I had this beer in a pilsner glass. It was a medium brown color with some red highlights. A medium sized tan head. Strong malt aroma, some dark fruit. Sweet. Big malt taste, sweet raisin. This was a chewy beer. It reminded me of the brown bread I used to eat with my baked beans. Very nice.

$5.50 per .5L bottle at Knightly Spirits in Orlando, FL. This brew pours a clear, brownish/dark red, and there's a small, but lasting head. Carbonation leans toward the low side, but is not inappropriate for the style. There's a superb, rich, toffee aroma in this beer that most American breweries never come close to emulating when trying to brew a bock. The flavor is even richer than the aroma. The delicious bock flavor in this beer is also something which is rarely found in bocks brewed outside of Austria and Germany. I'm really digging the malty, caramelized toffee flavor of this brew. This is an incredibly smooth doppelbock and one of the best I've had in a while. There's a strong maltiness, but that's what I like in a doppelbock. A little more carbonation would make it less syrupy, but it's excellent just the way it is. This beer is too expensive, but it is a very good example of a traditional doppelbock.
