Spacewalker American BelgoSpacewalker American Belgo
Notes: Spacewalker American Belgo is named for the surprising number of astronauts who have called Ohio home. Brewed with Belgian yeast and American hops, including the experimental ADHA 881 hop, Spacewalker is bold yet balanced with spicy, fruity flavors.

Picked up a 4 pack of this new Great Lakes seasonal Tuesday 7/8, just hit market this week...

Pours lovely golden amber, with thick frothy 3-4" head, lots of sticky lacing....so far so good!

A: Really nice color and clarity, drank outside on my patio, so light shining through beautifully, head hangs on a very long time

S: Spicy, earthy tones and hops are noticeable, along with bready malt and the Belgium yeast, smells great!

T: Super nice and well balanced, tastes much like it smells, earthy, musky, spicy, finishes dry and clean on the palate, alcohol very well hidden here, hard to imagine this is an 8+% abv!

M: Very pleasant in the mouth feel dept...clean and crisp, Belgium yeast undertones, not too heavy or light, great balance and makes you want to take another sip!

O: Overall, really like this new one from GLBC, a great summer brew, easy to quaff and down quickly on a pleasant summer evening outside...a winner for sure! Kudos to Luke Purcell and the brew crew at Great Lakes!

Love the label and nod to all the Spacewalking Ohio astronauts out there, great stuff!

Pours a cloudy apricot, with a big cap of frothy white foam.
Aroma-Spicy yeast notes
Taste-Spicy Belgian yeast alongside bitter hops and sweet malt. Rather muddled and unbalanced. A spicy food pairing would certainly help things out.

Maybe I'm a little biased, being from just an hour outside of Cleveland, but this is a spectacular brew.

12 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, golden-orange color with a quarter of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic, with lots of aromas of toasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly baked French baguettes, and crackers. I also get lots of honey and candied sugar, citrusy orange notes and spices of cardamom, coriander, saffron, black pepper and Belgian yeast.

Taste: Wow! Lots of flavor! I get some toasted malt up front, imparting notes of freshly baked French baguettes, and crackers, immediately replaced by tons of Belgian yeast, candied sugar, spices of cardamom, coriander, saffron, black pepper, a touch of orange citrus, and finished with some pronounced, but not out-of-balance, hoppy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and pretty effervescent as there is some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 8.2%, there is a touch of pleasant alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is a very, very good, great even, Belgian-style pale ale! Lots of Belgian yeasty funkiness, toasted malt and spices. Delicious! Highly recommended!

I purchased this from Wegmans enjoyed chilled in an IPA glass.

The color is deep radiant golden with excellent clarity and visible fast rising bubbles and 3 fingers of white head with fine bead and lace that sticks like candy buttons. The smell has a slight herbal aroma with a musty yet grainy smell with gentle phenolic odor and earthy hop smell with a slight hint of alcohol and dark sugar in the background. The feel has a spicy mixed with creamy texture and medium high carbonation with light sweetness and moderately high bitterness level with semi-dry finish and subtle alcohol warmth.

A great mix of hops with mild yeasty spice flavors and subtle earthiness up front with sweetness from the malt adding a grainy base bu mostly dry and herbal in flavor with a mix of hop and yeast flavor augmented by some mild alcohol and spice in the finish which lasts a long time. Overall a very good belgian from the style standpoint with a nice degree of drinkability for the strength. I probably should have tried this the first time I saw it for sale as I like it a lot and it would have been fresher perhaps.

An earlier reviewer said this brew seemed suspiciously reminiscent of a tripel, and I wholeheartedly agree. As soon as I took my first swig, I got that aftershave bite that I associate with tripels. Sorry, but I am not a big fan. However, that said, I am not going to judge this beer simply on the fact that I don't like tripels. The Spacewalker was served to me on tap, and it had a nice amber-gold color with a lovely but quickly dissipating white head. The smell was of rich spices mixed with aftershave, the taste being extremely similar. However, it was also fairly smooth, and I could quickly forgive the awful aftershave aftertaste. I won't be having this again, but it was worth a try just to say I won't.

- American-belgo. 10.18.14. Consumed 11.19.14 in a chalice.

(3.75) A: Cadmium orange, dense nature, with a lively, full showering of effervesce. Beautiful 2 inch antique white capping, fully lasting coverage leaving thick, wavy lace patterns on the vessel.

(3.45) S: Lemon wheat aroma, a hint of sugary cereal grains balances a light funky yeastiness. Breakfast fruit cantelope/honey dew, perfumy scent with a finish of freshly sliced lemon peels.

(3.80) T: Tart fruit flavor, dry citric peel, musky grains with a lingering funky hop bitterness. A hint of dry alcohol, grapefruit skin, straw and woodsy pine. A bit of piney-alcohol bite on the swallow.

(3.75) M: Malty lush mouthful, dry, tart with a lingering alkaline/asprin like coating on the tongue.

(3.75) O: Overall a strong belgian yeasty attribute, funky, dry, big flavor. very good, worthy a try.
