Deep golden/amber. One finger head in snifter, lingered a bit down the glass. Smells like sugar, booze, and oak. Taste follows, sweet and boozy with a light touch from the barrel. Golden raisins and typical Belgian yeast notes. Finish is oaky and a light hop note peeks out for a moment. Lightly prickling carbonation keeps it from being too syrupy. Great sipper for a cool night.

Yet another on-tap only "pub exclusive" enjoyed at the GLBC. Served to me in a snifter glass, this beer draws a clear, medium Amber/copper color with a white head that's about 1/3 of an inch thick when first served that settles very quickly to a medium sized ring long the inside of the glass along with a thin cluster swirl film layer of foam hanging out in the mode of the beer's surface. Very good lacing here. Aromas of some Belgian candy sugars and caramel malt sweetness along with just slight hint of oaked bourbon goodness and a slight hint of booze. The taste is pretty much the same, with Belgian candy sugar and caramel malt sweetness upfront followed by some oaked bourbon booziness and just a slight touch of hop bitterness, although the hops certainly seem like an afterthought here. Has a fairly crisp, yet also smooth and frothy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in an awesome way that well crafted beer ought to be. I really liked this one a lot!

A Belgian styled tripel ale, in bourbon barrels? Don't dare an American craft brewer to do anything. They just might do it. and they just might pull it off spectacularly. Great Lakes takes on such dare and brings their brewpub exclusive ale to the oaken, caramelized, vanillan delight of bourbon.

Barrel Aged Tripel Dog Dare swoons the senses with a caramel, banana and tropical scent that's remiss of bananas foster and creme brûlée. After a spicy tingle on the nose, the taste ensues with a rich caramel, honey and angel food cake sweetness. Deep in amber, the hazy ale's appearance is of winter's honey with a frothy and creamy cap.

As the caramel sweetness saturates the middle palate, the ale begins to warm to bring out added fruitiness of pineapple, orange, pear and apple. A hint of cherrywood follows while a softer spiciness of clove, vanilla and white pepper begins to balance the sweet fruitiness. Still, the banana character reigns supreme even while the barrel's soft oakiness, pulled candy, cream and coconut character adds subtle complexity to the beer's finish.

Full in body, the creamy and sugary ale departs from its Belgian influences and heads straight for American strong ale territory in a creamy, cakey weight and its spicy, woodsy, bitterness to close. Brandy, curaçao liquor and amaretto play out in the beer's spicy warmth as much as any whisky nuance does.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip
A: Opaque brown with a one-finger head
S: Cherry, caramel, Belgian yeast, banana
T: Matches the nose. Quite a bit of that Belgian fruit/yeast with caramel and toffee. A hint sweet
M: Full-bodied, only a hint of alcohol, again noticeable sweetness
O: For being bourbon barrel aged the only thing missing is the bourbon. Otherwise a decent, well-made tripel; I would be curious to do a side by side with the regular version
