Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA | Great Lakes Brewing Co. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, this beer's got a three finger thick lumpy off-white head, with solid lacing, and a clear deep amber-fading-into-gold. body.

I smell a crisp, yet juicy hop blend we've all known this brew for. Also present is a nearly perfect in and of itself cracker malt/butter mix.

Tastes like mildly sweet citrus before a mid-palate pine bitterness helps this brew stay grounded. All the while that malt complex is holdin' it down. Mmm mmm good!

The mouthfeel is medium with mild carbonation.

Overall, I'll give Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA | Great Lakes Brewing Co. a 4.5. I was kind of shocked that I haven't reviewed this by now & have bought case after case over the years. Guess I got complacent in the normalcy of always having this available, and always fresh at that. Regardless of my dumbassery, certainly pick this up if you already haven't.

Copper to almost a terra cotta color....if that is such a color. Commodore Perry has a good fruity smell, but not too much of a hop smell I thought it should. The taste is good, but again, not as many hop characteristics that I had hoped. The finish is dry as one would expect. Overall good IPA.

Some IPAs are rough, but this one has a nice balance. I like the taste of the hops in this, and it lingers on the tongue. It's listed as 7.7% ABV, but it doesn't feel that strong drinking it. I'm a big fan of Great Lakes Brewing Co, and this is a good go-to for bold flavor. It's great with pizza, also good with tacos.

L: Beautiful golden orange hue; not much in the way of head.
S: A fine combination of bready malt and citrus.
T: Very well balanced. Sharp grapefruit taste is restrained by the sweetness of malt. Neither overpowers the other; they harmoniously coexist on the palate.
F: A great alternative to more hoppy IPAs.
O: Many of the reviews of this completely miss the point. This is an ENGLISH IPA; it not meant to be a hop bomb, but rather to have the restraint and balance that I described above (restraint does NOT mean a lack of flavor). This beer is underrated by the aggregate score.

This IPA is English in style and boasts more malt and less hops than American IPAs. Pours out copper-amber in color and translucent lacking robust head and lacing. One tastes the bread like flavors first. The brew finishes with a mild bitterness. This has more of the grassy like flavor and aroma of English beers offer than citrusy and more biting American ones. Medium bodied and smooth with bready aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Not bad.
