Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Label says enjoy by 03/16/14. Whatever.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with an 1/8 inch light brown color that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Big dark chocolate notes. Semi-sweet smelling with some caramel, vanilla and a bit of mocha.

T- A tad sweeter than I thought it would be, although the hops bring a bitter aftertaste. More dark chocolate, dark roasted malt and some alcohol flavor.

M- Moderately viscous for an RIS with medium carbonation and a full body.

O- I love all the chocolate I get from this. The sweeter layers of flavors accentuate the chocolate and bring out all the enjoyable qualities of it. Hard to describe, but this is a great RIS albeit sweet for the style.

A hard pour produces in the glass a dark, seething void of a beer, with a thick, creamy, ashy white head that clings to the glass and has chocolatey looking swirls. This is a blackout for sure.

The flavors are roasty, full, and rich with all the usual stars for this style: chocolate, coffee, slight smokiness, earth, and bitter caramel. A mild to moderate sweetness lingers behind the bitter front, with a chewy, toothiness to the beer, a lightly syrupy viscosity, and yet incredibly smooth and easy to drink for what it is. I dare say this is quaffable.

Reminds me of other great Russian Imperial Stouts, like Old Rasputin (my personal favorite), though not quite as big. Perhaps even more dangerous, because it goes down a tad easier. While I think Great Lakes falls a bit short of taking the thrown, the fact that it can even hold up to the comparison speaks volumes. This is a really good, solid offering.

Poured into a stout/porter glass.

Something about this beer's appearance has Kelis's "Milkshake" song in my head. It's the coffee milkshake head three fingers thick and persistent in its frothy glory. The pitch-black body contrasts with this head like the distinct colors on a Rottweiler.

Such a creamy, sweet aroma. Dark chocolate, sweet caramel and cream and a floral hop presence. It kind of reminds me of tiramisu. Delicious smelling.

Plenty of the sweet creamy caramel and chocolate rush over my tongue. Dark coffee decides to finally show up for this party and linger long after. Floral hops emerge right before the finish.

I'll point out first that the body is thinner than some of the best of the imperial stouts out there and that lowers the score a bit. But other than that, this is great. A good dose of hops, creamy sweetness, and a lingering, dry coffee finish.

An excellent imperial stout. Say no more.
