After hearing much praise for this brewery, I'm happy to have it available in my state (in the grocery store no less). This one pours a sparkling orange gold color, with a modest but respectable off-white head. The aroma is mild but pleasant, with light lemony and earthy hop characteristics being only slightly sweetened by a very subtle dry bready malt presence. The malt contribution is much bigger in the flavor, with a dry bready/biscuity character complementing a musty, grassy, dull bitterness. The texture likewise complements the flavors, with a crisp, prickly carbonation helping to blend everything into one drinkable yet satisfying package.

Appearance: Poured in a pint glass, looks beautiful, crystal clear, burnt orange. About a finger’s worth of fluffy head and good carbonation presence. Head dissipates after a few minutes but good lacing remains.

Smell: Bread, honey, chocolate, sweet caramel malts. Not overpowering.

Taste: Nice bittersweet yeasty bready malt flavor with little aftertaste. Good dark chocolate flavor on the finish. Nice balance of flavors without being too complex.

Mouthfeel: Goes down easy. This could almost be a session beer for me. Good carbonation and balance throughout.

Overall: A solid brew but nothing really stands out or is particularly memorable. I reviewed the last of my six-pack and felt pretty much the same on this one as the others.

Dortmunder Gold poured into a pilsner flute, consumed on 5/31/12. Best by date: 6/23/12.

A- Big two finger white head with good retention. Dissipates to a nice sheet over the course of a few minutes. Good clarity. Beautiful golden-orange body. Nice spiderweb lacing.

S- Out the neck: Very faint sweet grainy aroma & very faint noble hop aroma. Once poured, faint grainy malt with maybe a little crackery/biscuity malt. Small hint of noble/czech hops.

T- Pilsner malt, light bitterness. Finish is slightly sweet at first but dries out eventually with a light hop bitterness lingering.

M- Medium bodied. Medium carbonation.

O- Much more enjoyable than all the American macro lagers but it still is what it is, a light lager. So by default, not very interesting. Easy drinking though.

A: This beer is a bright and clear medium gold with a long lasting white head.
S: This beer has a medium hops aroma with that noble hops style closely behind that is a soft, sweet Pils malt aroma. It has clean fermentation without any ester or phenols and just a faint hint of DMS.
T: It has a medium-high hops flavor balanced by a Pils malt flavor and a bit of sweetness. There is a nice hops bitterness throughout that carries in the finish
M: A soft medium body and medium carbonation.
O: This is an outstanding beer that is wonderfully balanced and very satisfying. The armoma is amazing where the first whiff lets you know your in for a real treat with a well crafted beer. I'm totally lacking in my ability to describe what going on beyond those two primary notes of malts and hops in the aroma and flavor but it's pure magic.
