Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a moderate amount of bubbles. About a finger of light tan head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A roasty and fairly sweet dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate and oatmeal. Dark roasted malt with a scent of chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, toast, biscuit, nuts, and caramel along with some yeast. Sweet hints of lactose milk, vanilla, and brown sugar. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and sweet dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate and oats. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of chocolate, coffee, toast, oatmeal, biscuit, caramel, and nuts with some yeast. Sweet taste of lactose milk, brown sugar, and vanilla. A very solid roasty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty good take on an Oatmeal Stout. Good roasty chocolate and oat notes.

12 ounce bottle served in a pint glass.

Pours a jet black color with a 1/2 fingered, tan head. Minimal lacing.

Smells of dark toasted malts and biscuit.

To be honest, not much flavor. I was expecting a robust, roasted malt flavor with stronger bits of coffee and chocolate. For me, there's not much to this beer. Kind of like a Guinness... a stout and nothing special to it.

I really wanted to love this beer. I live a few miles from the brewery (and love most of their beers)... I had it on tap once a few years ago (I thought I remembered it being better)... I love stouts... it had a cool looking "wintery" label on the bottle... and so I was excited when they announced they were being offered in a six pack and bought them the day they came out. Now I am wondering what to do with the other 5.

UPDATE: After a week and 3 of them downed, its grown on me a little more. Still not great, but better than my original review.

I still won't be buying these again (too many great beers out there) but I will finish the six pack instead of giving them away.

Not being a big fan of heavy or dark, stout is not one of my favorite styles and even though I love the flavor of malt and hops I want a brew to be extremely balanced. Anything too strong either way doesn't satisfy me and there are so many that do swing both ways. This brew isn't one of my favorites but it isn't terrible and I actually rate it above average for a stout. If you are a lover of the ones with the heavier flavors this is one that you will enjoy.
