Review from notes taken at a bar in Prague years ago:

On-draught. 4.20 euro.

APPEARANCE: Head is 1 finger in height. Boasts nice soft creaminess, and good thickness, but retention is average. Body colour is a solid black.

AROMA: Nutty caramel, creaminess, chocolate, toffee. A wonderful aroma of moderate intensity.

TASTE: Nutty but not vividly so as in English brown ales. Creamy undertones. Chocolate malt, sweet dark malt. Well built and balanced, with adequate complexity given the style. It's almost refreshing, and has a nice silky creaminess to it.

TEXTURE: Smooth. Wet. A bit thick - maybe too much so, but that's a minor gripe.

OVERALL: Very easy to drink for a dark beer. Definitely a high quality brew, and a fairly priced one. I'd love to have it again.

Pours a clear dark brown. Head is tall and tan, very bubbly. Aromoa is simple, grains and malt. Taste is also simple and sweet. A slight hit of hops is noticed. Texture is thin. Overall not a bad beer, I would pass on using a session beer due to sweetness.

S - Is of caramel malt and dark fruits

T - Slightly sweet caramel at first then some dark fruit flavores come through

M - This beer has a medium body with higher carbonation to it

D - Nothing in any one area blows me away but it does taste better than most Euro Dark Lagers its fairly easy to drink overall its a decently well made beer not my first choice but would drink it again

This was poured from the bottle into a pilsner flute.

A - super-clear dark ruby amber color with a decent head that settles into a well retained collar after a while

S - toasted malt with some hops noticed

T - toasted malt sweetness with modest spicy European-like hop flavor balancing it out well enough

M - medium body, moderate to high carbonation

D - This is a decent Vienna-style lager and was reviewed as such as I think it fits the style well. It'd make a decent session beer as well I think.

Part of my BOTM Club July shipment...

A: clear carmel in color. light, whispy head. decent lacing.

S: light carmel malts, almost brown ale in scent. best quality.

T: Bready and malty. Tastes of honey and carmel. Bitter finish.

M: Medium body, slightly sticky. Ample carbonation

D: The balance of flavors is a little off, the sweet and the bitter slightly too intense, but a lot of credit for a beer of this style.

Received in July shipment of my Beer of the Month club.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Flat Earth pint glass.

Appearance: Clear, medium reddish-brown with thin head that dissipates too rapidly. Very light lacing.

Smell: Toffee, nuts, cherry and smoke. Overall, pretty good for a malty lager.

Taste: Very malty and somewhat sweet - caramel, plum, cherry and some nuttiness. Slightly spicy finish from the Saaz. I really wish the spiciness was stronger to balance the sweetness. Leaves a cloying aftertaste.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body (relatively full for a lager and almost syrupy).

Drinkability: Nice to try something different from the Czech Republic, but I would prefer a Pilsner. That said, this is pretty good, but nothing worth seeking out.

Appearance: Pours a clear caramel color with a nice sturdy head that leaves a fair bit of webbed lace behind

Smell: Smells like caramel with an unusual artificial character

Taste: Starts out bready but quickly becomes very sweet with a slightly burnt sugar aspect that provides a bitter, medicinal quality; after the swallow, the bitterness fades and is replacing by the sweet flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation but the sweet flavors are very sticky

Drinkability: The sweetness is intense and off-putting; not recommended

Flawless burnt orange with butterscotch trim. Multiple streams of fine bubbles slowly make their way up to a head the color of orange-peanut butter mousse. The foam looks good after the pour, a little less good as it descends, and isn't tacky enough to decorate the glass with more than a few dribs and drabs of lace.

The nose is nothing to write home about. It isn't dark enough to be a good Euro dark lager nose and it isn't toasted enough to be a good Vienna lager nose (which is what I hoped this beer would actually be). It's a little caramel-like and a trifle fruity, but that's about it.

Granat is slightly more interesting on the palate. It's clearly malt-dominant, with a caramelized sugar flavor and sweetness that doesn't make the correct assignment of a style any easier. There's needs to be something else present for me to get fully onboard. In fact, I take back the word 'interesting'. The beer is unrelentingly simple, with almost no depth or complexity whatsoever.

There's plenty of malt present, so darker malt might improve things. More hops would be welcome too. I'm left grasping for flavors the beer isn't able to provide. Having said that, what's present is acceptably enjoyable and is going down with a minimum of fuss and bother. I would have guessed the ABV at 7.0% at least.

The mouthfeel is the very definition of firm and steely. A relative lack of bubbles gives it a smooth, slick character that I'm okay with. It may not be the mouthfeel that I would have drawn up, but it works out okay.

Herold Granate is a decent dark lager from Poland. Unfortunately (or, rather, fortunately), merely 'decent' beer rarely make a return engagement in my glass. Other than Bohemian Black Lager, I haven't had anything from this brewery that has floated my boat.

I very much enjoyed this brew. A very nice example of a Czech lager. Pours an amber/light brown with a 2" head. Somewhat translucent. Caramelized toffee sweetness and bittersweet malts predominate. Slight hop character for that extra zing. Perhaps not quite carbonated enough for my liking.

overall, a very nice beer and one that i would be happy to drink with more regularity.

Pours brilliantly clear, deep amber brown color and is topped by an initially three-finger thick, creamed amber colored head. A predominantly dry aroma, with perhaps a touch of caramelized malt character. This smells like Munich malt, lightly toasted and lots of chewy melanoids. The aroma is quite nice, though it is fairly subtle. Aromatic notes of toffee become noticeable at times as well.

Malty sweet, not cloying, but laden with complex sugars that run the gamut from caramelized through to just lightly roasted. The finish has a drying character, contributed by light roast notes & predominantly toasted notes, that makes you want to take another sip to get back to the up front complex malt sugars. Nicely bitter, though not so much do take away from the dominant malt character. The bitterness, in combination with the carbonation, adds a bit of a spritziness to this beer. Also in the finish the hop bitterness and toasted malt notes seem to combine to give an almost tannic character. Spicy hop notes are also here, but play a subservient role to the malt character. This is a really nice beer, it just drinks so smoothly. It has enough of a body to accentuate the chewy malt character, but is still light enough to be perfectly quaffable. I am quite impressed, this beer is definitely hitting the spot right now.

New import from Herold...

Pours into a pilsner glass with a couple fingers of foam, which rapidly subsides.
Color is a clear amber, with tiny champagne streams of carbonation.

Smell is dull, kind of musty and sweet. Not especially memorable or likeable.

Taste is initially lightly sweet malt. Mild hop twang barely in the aftertaste. Pretty easygoing, middle of the road stuff. Not bold like a Czech Pilsner, it comes across more like a Märzen. Kind of nutty or fruity, but the sweet element reminds me of butterscotch or cola. One is enough for me.
