Very Good
Brew Free! or Die Blood Orange IPABrew Free! or Die Blood Orange IPA
Notes: Ale brewed with Blood Oranges. Blood Orange Brew Free! is brewed like our original west coast style Brew Free! or Die IPA, but with an abundance of fresh blood orange puree and a twist of citrusy dry hops. Refreshingly different. As Abe would say, “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

An over the top citrus IPA. Golden colored with pillowy white head and tons of blood orange pulp in the aroma. Hard to detect hops. So much citrus pulp there is almost a methol like flavor. Citrusy hops. Medium body with nice finish. Hard to put this down because it grows on you.

The orange is more pronounced on the nose than it is in the flavor.
Not uber hoppy by any means, but very pleasant. A bit of malt in the finish and the blood orange is present as well. Not really warm enough weather for this, but it would be a really enjoyable spring/summer IPA. I will look for this again.

12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy golden with a fluffy white head that falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. It smells like orange pop and/or an orange creamsicle. It's basically all orange and citrus. Some malts in the mix. The flavors are citrus forward as well. Tons of orange and tangerine. Lots of fresh grass. It's not too bitter. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's smooth and pretty easy to drink.

This is an alright IPA. It's nothing too crazy, but they deliver on the blood orange. It's not my new personal favorite "fruit IPA", but it's not bad.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a Teku glass. Stamped "San Leandro, CA SQF27 1102"
Hazy yellow-orange with a finger of short-lived head and plenty of bubbles.
Powerfully fruity, with citrus and pine right up front. I'm getting more tangerine than blood orange in the nose. Sweet, pungent, and dripping with juice.
Yum! Even (much?) better than standard Brew Free! or Die, this IPA has all the malty character with hop accents, but ultra-saturated with orange juice. It never gets cloying though, with a well-edged bitterness throughout.
Thick-bodied, but just carbonated enough.
Pretty nice beer, the only thing holding it back is the mediocrity of its base beer, and there's not much you can do about that, huh? Highly recommended for lovers of fruit-forward American (I)Pale Ales.

Pours a hazy golden color, nice foamy head. Aroma off the bat was clearly had some sweet orange and lemon notes - possibly the used some actual orange peels or juice. The taste was not overly hoppy so that could easily have been a straight pale ale - minus the India. Taste was light, fruity, easy to drink nothing sticky or resiny. This is a fairly big beer, clocking in a 7% but very well hidden. A nice brew overall, especially if you dig the many blood orange offerings on the market currently.

this avoids two major pitfalls of the citrus fruited ipa. the first is that its not too sweet, a lot of these get so sugary they dont taste good unless they are freezing cold, and the average belly cant stomach more than one or two. the second is that its beer first and fruity second, meaning its not so over fruited as to have lost its ipa foundation, and this is a pretty solid ipa to start with. i appreciate that. the fruit is authentic and as such, has a little tang to it, which really brings out the citrus notes in the hops, a nice balance there, and a neat compliment. some good malt flavor to this too, a biscuit and honey and crystal thing going on, really keeps it beery as well. a little more substantial than many as a result, but its flattering to the overall experience i think. citrus bitterness and oils to finish with the hops, this is sturdy enough to be useful beyond just the hot summer months. one of the few citrus ipas i have had lately that has any real staying power. i liked this pretty well for the style, although i think they were a bit late to the party with it...

12oz can into a tall glass. NO freshness dating, just a code on the bottom that I couldn't figure out.

slightly hazy amber body, good white head with decent lacing.

Orange and hops come through nicely on the nose.

The sweet tartness of the blood orange and medium hop bite combine nicely for a pleasing drink. Orange is quite strong, but this mix works well.

A touch below medium on the body, slightly bitter orange on the finish.

Preferred this to other orange IPA's I remember. Nice job 21st Amendment!

Can stamped "Cold Spring MN CQT03 0314" on the bottom. (Suggestion to the guys at 21st Amendment, who hopefully read these reviews occasionally: if you're going to go to the trouble of stamping your cans, PLEASE include a decipherable date!) Pours a nice clear medium amber with a thin off-white head that quickly reduces to a cap. Initial impression is orange (of course), grapefruit, pine, and a noticeable malty sweetness. There is a background bitterness that nicely offsets the fruity and malty sweetness, though. Mouthfeel is somewhat thick, but the carbonation keeps things refreshing. Finish is tangy and full of citrus, but not bitter. I much prefer this version of BFOD to the original.

I like the idea of this beer, but I'm not as fond of the execution. It's an attractive cloudy orange, with a good head and lacing. The nose is all citrus orange. But the flavor doesn't quite measure up. There's an artificial quality to the finish, sort of like an orange soda of old days that tasted metallic. It does finish bitter, but again, the bitterness seems a bit artificial.

A nice subdued hoppy IPA with the definite taste of oranges. It has a very active carbonation when poured, leaving a relatively small white foamy head which dissipates quickly. Some lacing lingers while drinking. Taste is hop forward but not as full of hop flavour as the big IPAs, while the taste of the orange is noticeable and remains with each sip after the other hop flavours have subsided. Pretty good IPA, but likely a one off for me.

Golden yellow with a slight pinkish hue, plenty of carbonation and great foamy white head. Aroma is full of fresh oranges, tangy and sweet. Taste is full of fresh oranges, sweet and slightly bitter from the hops. Mouthfeel is acidic, full of arrange juice and with a nice hop bitterness and a good balance. Finish is of orange and orange pith. Good IPA !

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours golden orange amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces very nicely.

S: Fresh citrus, blood orange and grapefruit dominate, a little biscuity malt, and some caramel sweetness.

T: Fresh juicy citrus, blood orange, pink grapefruit, and lemon, a little guava, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Best Blood Orange IPA I've had so far. It keeps things light and bright while avoiding getting overly sweet like some others I've tried.

Revisit: Still lots of fresh juicy citrus. There's a little candied fruit that goes along with it. I'm gonna knock my overall score back a notch because it's almost got too much juice that it can kinda overwhelms the base beer.

A: crystal clear; deep gold in color; 2 finger off white head that receded to a thin cap; nice lacing;

S: blood orange;

T: blood orange from start to finish; some blood orange zest bitterness comes in after the middle and stays through the end; moderate bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: for a fruit IPA, this is nicely done - the blood orange comes through nicely;
