12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a sour glass

This beer pours a brilliant golden color and is topped with a fleeting white head that leaves no lacing.

It has more of a Belgian pale ale smell than a sour. I pick up on the watermelon.

Just like the smell the taste is Belgian pale ale. I get some watermelon flavor in the middle through the finish. Belgian yeast flavors abound.

Medium bodied with relatively low carbonation

I don't know how this is a sour. My untutored senses tell me that it is a Belgian ale with watermelon. I get no tartness.

Poured into a chalice: color is murky looking copper, head is off white with small bubbles, head presents 1/2 inc thick and then dissipates to thin ring on the glass sides.

Smell is light watermelon, some bread, hint of tart lemon or similar.

Taste is wheat, then quick to watermelon, then some breadiness with the tart flavoring. Flavor works for what it is, I don't pick out much saison like qualities in the taste.

Mouthfeel is where the saison yeast takes over with soft feel with light sweetness that dries out quickly on the tongue.

Overall a watermelon beer that works, again from 21st Amendment.

Appearance - Pours with a slight haze and golden in color with a white, finger width head that fizzes away in fair time, resulting in a mostly barren surface with a thin ring around the edge of the glass. No lacing.

Smell - Wheat, with lesser sour watermelon.

Taste - Follows the nose. Fair tartness upfront with watermelon sweetness and an underlying wheaty character. Quick to the finish, leaving a light, funky and melony tartness lingering on the tongue/

Mouthfeel - Light in body with moderate carbonation. Slick, easy drinker with a slightly watery finish.

Overall - Pretty much their Hell or High Watermelon with some added tartness. Nothing to write home about. At $15/sixer, no way I'd buy it again.

L- Poured gently into a tulip glass. Clear straw color. 1/4 inch of foam that dissipated quickly.

S- Smells like a Belgian ale. No hint of watermelon.

T- Disappointed. I like Belgian ales, but I was expecting something different. This tastes and smells like a Belgian ale. It's not sour and I detect no watermelon.

F- Average. Not sticky or crisp, nor thick or thin.

O- 21st Amendment is doing some good work. Hell Or High Watermelon is still my favorite watermelon beer and their IPAs are solid. This one missed the mark though

12 oz can

Pours mostly clear amber, ring of white head.

Smells of mildly tart citrus and melon over cracker malt.

Tastes of sweet melon, tart citrus, biscuit and medicinal fruit.

Light body, tingly carbonation on the tongue.

Pretty average with slightly off-putting flavor. It's not terrible but I wouldn't have it again.

Not especially funky, but a reasonably tart brew considering the base Hell or High Watermelon. The watermelon is subtle and the lemony tang is bigger. The aroma has a saison-like spice that's on the cleaner side. Solid beer over, though I'd probably prefer to use it in a beer cocktail.

Umm...where's the watermelon? I am getting sour, a little bit of funk (maybe), and not a whole lot else. Slightly watery. Maybe that's the watermelon? Not bad but not even close to what I was hoping for.

Pours an opaque deep gold with some effervesce rising, producing a semi-aggressive, short-lived, mineral water foamy, white head which recedes into Oblivion with nothing left behind except the faint ghost of a collar ring. Aroma is lactic, wheat bread, pale malt, green apple, watermelon & lemon wrapped around a hint of Belgian funk. Taste is sour, citric, green apple acetaldehyde prominent, pale malt, thin wheat & hint of Belgian funk. The watermelon is most apparent in the finish where it rides over into the short-lived aftertaste. As noted before with several other wild ale beers I've tried where a Gose-like brine develops in the finish. I do not think salt is an ingredient in this brew. I feel there is something in the lactic acid sourness that I am confusing with brine. Throughout the first half of the sip there is a loose balance of sweet & sour with sweet rapidly becoming dominant in the drying finish. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate carbonation, some prickliness, dry finish & lightly drawing.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lightly tart/tangy watermelon, cucumber, lemon, lime, pear, green apple, white grape, wheat, cracker, biscuit, hay, grass, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, watermelons, and pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lightly tart/tangy watermelon, cucumber, lemon, lime, pear, green apple, white grape, wheat, cracker, biscuit, hay, grass, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderately fruity/lactic tartness; light yeast spiciness and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of tart watermelon, cucumber, lemon, lime, pear, green apple, white grape, wheat, cracker, biscuit, hay, grass, light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, watermelons, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance, and no puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tartness/fruit tang. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly acidic/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 6.7%. Overall this is a very good fruited kettle sour. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, watermelons, and pale malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink with the mellowly lactic/tangy/drying finish. Was hoping for some Brett character from a beer with funk in the name; but it is just the Lacto. More acidity would have been nice too, but this was really enjoyable otherwise. Not overwhelming on the cucumber notes from the watermelons. Nice authentic feeling fruit character.

32 oz crowler- Pours hazy straw golden with a medium white head that slowly reduces eventually leaving almost no head, just a very thin collar and no lace. Aroma is real watermelon mixed with funky lacto, and kinda creates an underlying jolly rancher flavor here, along with souring notes. The taste is similar, watermelon is there, but the souring has sorta mellowed it, real easy drinking, candy sweetness that isn't in the original beer, a bit thin. This is good, is not blowing me away though, goes good with pizza.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is funky, some watermelon. Taste is somewhat tart, wheat, mild watermelon, finishes dry. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

Welcome to (my) Watermelon Wednesday! It CAN be a daunting task to find new entries for the weekly celebration, but it surely Bumps the Hump! This will also do double duty with its inclusion into The CANQuest (tm).

From the CAN: "We have transformed our summertime watermelon wheat beer into Watermelon Funk, a mind blowing, shake your booty, interlocking sour bass lines with syncopated sweet fruit notes and downbeat aromas and we give you all that in a signature groove with the hip and sway of Lady Liberty."; "Funk Factor Vol 11".

I wrestled with how to approach this one, but since it is, at base, a wheat ale, some haze would not be inappropriate nor out of the question. I decided to agitate the beer in the CAN, give it a few minutes to settle & then perform an inverted Glug following the Crack! Well, it was a good idea in theory, anyway. I got just over a finger of foamy, fizzy, bone-white head that quickly fell away to wisps. Color was a slightly hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5). Nose had a light, funky sourness, nothing overwhelming, with a definite watermelon presence. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste was more tart than sour, but it did not overwhelm the watermelon, which was good. I mean, what would be the sense of giving it top billing & then shunting it to the side? The funk factor was NOT 11, maybe for 21st Amendment, but not for me & I am not big on tart/sour beers anyway. The funk gave it a lemony tartness, but it worked well as a CANterbalance to the sweetness of the watermelon. Finish was semi-dry & nicely refreshing, which is what I generally want & look for in a wheat ale. It was a good choice for the summertime.

Purchased cold - can date indiscernible - Poured into an English pub glass

L - Pours a clear orangey-gold with a fizzy 2 finger head that disappears in a flash, no lacing whatsoever as it goes down.

S - Slight funk, muted sour, wheat.

T - Mild funk, halfhearted sour, overt coriander and wheat with the watermelon being pretty much nonexistent.

F - Light bodied with moderate albeit fine carbonation.

O - Where's the watermelon? Where's the sour? This beer is a lame duck. Yeah its got some mild funk to it, but the coriander is way too overpowering. Not quite a drain-pour but pretty damn close. Skip this one and buy something else.

I had much higher expectations for this one. Pretty clear pour, and the funk is minimal. A lot of watermelon, minimal tartness or body. Kinda dissapointed

L: Slightly hazy orange with a big foamy white head. Head dissipates rapidly, but leaves a thin ring . No lacing is left behind.

S: Tart watermelon with a funky edge. Solidly perceptible barnyard presence. Astringent crab apple and green apple skin tartness, and mildew with faint touch of lemon peel and pineapple.

T: Big watermelon candy upfront, but there's a heavy funk presence that attacks the tongue and dries out the palate. Puckering tartness, green apple skin and lemon zest with crab apple astringency. Nice crackery, wheaty subtle malt backbone. Finishes tart and dry.

F: Medium-light bodied, prickly carbonation, dry. Drinks extremely easily, and alcohol is dangerously hidden.

O: I really like this! Miles above their regular watermelon wheat. This is almost like a watermelon lambic. Unique and tasty!

A: Pours a golden yellow color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to pretty much nothing

S: Watermelon, light funk, wheat, and some fruitiness all stick out. Nothing too stand-offish

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a bit of acetic tartness and funk and then picks up some light watermelon and wheat notes. Finishes with lingering light tartness and wheat

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A solid twist on their watermelon wheat, this version being far superior in my opinion. The watermelon is on the lighter side, which really allows the the saison yeast and tartness to take control. Great summer beer. Definitely don't hesitate to pick this one up if you don't enjoy the watermelon wheat

12oz can served in a pair of Redhook samplers. It says San Leandro on the bottom, but if there's a date, I don't understand it.

Pours mostly clear yellow with a smallish head and a lot of carbonation. Smell is lemon and tart, and not much else.

Taste is lemon and tart, some wheat. I don't get any watermelon.

Mouthfeel is medium and sticky. Overall, it's not bad.
