We have transformed our summer time watermelon wheat beer into Watermelon Funk, a mind blowing, shake your booty, interlocking sour bass lines with syncopated sweet fruit notes and downbeat aromas and we give you all that in a signature groove with the hip and sway of Lady Liberty.

12oz can served in a pair of Redhook samplers. It says San Leandro on the bottom, but if there's a date, I don't understand it.

Pours mostly clear yellow with a smallish head and a lot of carbonation. Smell is lemon and tart, and not much else.

Taste is lemon and tart, some wheat. I don't get any watermelon.

Mouthfeel is medium and sticky. Overall, it's not bad.

(12 oz can, 09039B 0831, "funky fresh"; different label art that what's pictured here; purchased single off shelf at Total Wine... poured into a fat tulip, similar to that shown on their website)

L: clear enough, yellow-gold liquid; fleeting fizzy foam... barely any collar keeps around; no lace

S: smells like a kettle-soured version of their Watermelon Wheat, meaning more wheat, less overt fruit... the souring is no close to intense... hints of vinyl and Chap Stick as well

T: flavors very close match aromas and anticipation of taste; a greater wheat-forward ale presence start to finish... the souring is barely tart, it's reminiscent of an apple juice in which ice cubes have partially melted... more like a dry, sparkling white wine (or cider)

F: light-bodied without much contour... lightly fizzy/spritzy... soft warmth gradually builds at the back of the palate... even its tartness isn't quite enough to entertain

O: cool concept, just disappointing in its execution, and the name too; no funk (2218)

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a sour glass

This beer pours a brilliant golden color and is topped with a fleeting white head that leaves no lacing.

It has more of a Belgian pale ale smell than a sour. I pick up on the watermelon.

Just like the smell the taste is Belgian pale ale. I get some watermelon flavor in the middle through the finish. Belgian yeast flavors abound.

Medium bodied with relatively low carbonation

I don't know how this is a sour. My untutored senses tell me that it is a Belgian ale with watermelon. I get no tartness.

Poured into a chalice: color is murky looking copper, head is off white with small bubbles, head presents 1/2 inc thick and then dissipates to thin ring on the glass sides.

Smell is light watermelon, some bread, hint of tart lemon or similar.

Taste is wheat, then quick to watermelon, then some breadiness with the tart flavoring. Flavor works for what it is, I don't pick out much saison like qualities in the taste.

Mouthfeel is where the saison yeast takes over with soft feel with light sweetness that dries out quickly on the tongue.

Overall a watermelon beer that works, again from 21st Amendment.
