as more and more breweries take on the pumpkin ale style each year, the less differentiation there seems to be in the beers, and a style i used to love has turned into something a lot less exciting as they all start to taste the same a little bit. thats why i was so stoked to encounter this new one from these guys, its a darker pumpkin ale, made with actually smoked pumpkin, a little smoked malt, and it has a ton of character. the pumpkin itself has a light cooked sweetness, a campfire smoke to it, a light char, and a wonderful seasonally perfect earthiness. the malt here doent add a ton of body, but the flavor is great, burnt sugars, maple, charred wood, and even a light whiskey element. for all this flavor, its also super drinkable with a nice low abv, a relatively dry finish for what it is, and only a medium body thats enough to hold up all the flavor but not so much that it slows me down any. really, this is downright delicious. a nice nuttiness with the roast of the pumpkin, and something warming and hearty about it. its not overly spiced or anything, which is the current common pitfall, and its got some nice bitterness to balance what sugars are here. i found this delicious, distinct, and drinkable, the triple D if you will. one of the best beers i have had from these guys in awhile, and one of my favorite beers to use pumpkin from this season!
