From notes. Reviewed 10 February 2013. On tap at the brewery, served in a plastic cup.

A: Opaque black body. Light tan head.

S: Chocolate. Dairy. Sweet malt.

T: Serious stout. Anise, milk chocolate, dark bready malt, hopped bitter endtaste. Serious bitterness, beyond the 61 IBU listed. Strong, dry finish.

M: Thick and imposing.

O: Definitely formidable. Top notch stout. Recommended.

No head, subtle roastiness and smokiness on aroma and palette. Weak mouthfeel. No real flaws, just kind of meh.

Taken at the brewery tap on 5th Feb 2013: this 8.6% ABV version was on offer during 'Strong Beer Month', so I thought it only right to try one (along with the other 8 beers and 1 cider).

Black, going to dark, deep brown: the head a tanned foam.

Coffee and dark chocolate taste and smell: not too 'in your face', but very noticeable, even after a few 'heavy' brews have been already been quaffed. Liquorice notes arrive once your senses take in the coffee and chocolate esters.

Pleasant without blowing my socks off: neither rich nor creamy in the mouth, instead a mild hop bitterness takes over and that appears to thin out the body somewhat mid-mouthful. Interesting and different (for a visiting Brit).

4 oz. sampler on tap at 21st Amendment on 8-7-10.

A. Black, thin, a small ring of foam around the edge of the glass. No lacing.

S. Roast malts, coffee, slight burnt caramel notes.

T. Slight amount of coffee and roast, but dominated by Sweet & Low, Equal, Splenda, and any other gross artifical sweetner you can think of.

M. Perhaps a little thin for what is labeled as an impy stout, but more or less appropriate for the style.

D. Terrible. So sweet, and not malty sweet. My wife and I struggled to finish our 4 oz. sample.

I'll consider this an experiment gone wrong. 21A makes some pretty good stuff most of the time. I'll bet there are some non craft beer drinkers out there who like this beer. If it sells, good for them.

On-tap at 21A

A: The pour is nearly black with a thin ring of tan foam and some streaks of lacing.

S: The nose is quite nice, lots of roasted malts, burnt sugar, chocolate, and a lot of coffee.

T: The coffee is dominant up front and is immediately followed by a diabetes inducing sweetness. There is some roast underneath the aforementioned flavor, but the sweetness is just too much.

M: The body is maybe a little thin for an RIS. Carbonation is soft and smooth.

D: I had to try to pour some IPA into this to make it drinkable as the sweetness was just far too much to handle.
