Straight from the can. Turns the rim of the can nice and dark. Strong coffee/chocolate flavor that melts into lighter roasted notes that finishes between a perfect blend of sweet and bitter. Oyster flavor is not apparent, or either contributes in a manner I am unable to pick up in. Overall impression is this is a very tasty easy drinking stout that helps me melt into the couch on a nice brisk fall evening, don't really care if I can't taste oysters because it taste so damn good without any sliminess.

sampling a cellar temp can poured into a snifter.
The beer pours a rich chocolate brown color with creamy tan head foaming up about 2 cm even with a gentle pour.
Aroma is dry cocoa and some light toffee mixed with just a hint of earthy hops. A little bit of plum or prune notes too. Mostly dry baker's chocolate though, no salty brine or anything like that from oyster shells.
First sip reveals a nice smooth texture with gentle rolling carbonation. Easy drinking beer.
Flavor is similar to nose advertisements with cocoa powder and roast malt and a little sweet toffee. Finish is slightly bitter but more coffee ground than hops, although again there are some earthy hops that come through after each swallow.
Well made easy to drink beer with no hints of the 7.9% ABV listed on the can.

Not sure why, but I wasn't really expecting that much from this beer. As it turned out, it was a nice surprise. Fair amount of bitterness, just the right amount of dryness, some bitter chocolate tastes, and more complexity than you'd think. It looks great in the glass, and it drinks so easily. Yes, it gets a little more substantial as it warms, and from what I remember quite a bit so, but it still is a nicely balanced beer. Nice surprise.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a snifter. Acquired as an extra in a trade from gwdavis, thanks man!

A- Pours a deep brown, nearly black, opaque body with a nice light-mocha head that reduces slowly and leaves heavy lacing.. very inviting!

S- I'm really straining to get a good sense of aroma here .. vanilla, coffee, chocolate, toffee, and it may be my imagination but a slight fishyness. Gets more aromatic as it warms.

T- Lots of chocolate and freshly roasted coffee, a deep roastyness that shows up on the follow through. The aftertaste is maybe slightly chalky and salty, but if I didn't know that this was an oyster stout I would have never picked up on it. Works well. No alcohol at all, which is nice for 7.9%.

M- Thick and lightly carbonated. Rich and flavorful.

This stout was done very well. One of my first oyster stouts but I really liked it.

12oz can with Canned on: 11/19/12 on the bottom.Pours black with about an inch of frothy light brown head. Some lacing. Aromas of malts, chocolate, soy sauce, earth and smoke. Almost meaty. Tastes earthy with some malts and is a bit salt. Tastes like it comes from the sea. Earthy at the finish with some nice dark chocolate and hints of salt. Tastes kind of like a chocolate covered pretzel. Light mouthfeel. I don't really have anything bad to say about the beer except that the salty flavor may make it hard to drink a few in one sitting. Overall, an interesting beer that'd I probably grab again.

Poured into a chalice. Had been in my cellar for 4 to 5 months. Forgot to write down the bottled on date.

I like this beer. Well balanced between coffee/bitterness/sweetness/mineraliness.

A - Pours a clear reddish black. Opaque in the glass. With a two-finger tan rocky head, which quickly dissipates (-). There was also a reddish brown “goober” which poured from the can and floated in the beer (-). I spooned it out and drank the beer anyway.

S – Sweetness, roasted malt, faint dark chocolate, some citrusy aroma.

T – Coffee, roasted coffee bitterness, sweetness.

MF – Thinner than expected. Medium bodied. Good carbonation leads to some fizziness on the palate. Slight mineraliness. Bitter in the middle with a medium dry finish.

Poured from a 12oz. can, canned on 11/19/12.

Appearance: Nearly pitch black body, tan head, a bit frothy.

Smell: Roasted malt, bit salty, minerals, bit fishy? Wisps of dark chocolate as well.

Taste: Cocoa, charcoal, strong mineral overtone (not TOO strong), bitter-sweet chocolate chunks, salt, charred smoky wood.

Mouthfeel: Real smooth at first, low carbonation belies the bitterness that follows.

Overall: A nice twist on a traditional stout. Very much enjoyed it.

Fairly dark oily brown-black body. Pinkie width of dirty khaki head. Not much lacing. Sweet dark fruits, light roasted malts, hints of cherry, vanilla, and ocean air.

Light roastiness up front. Toffee and milk chocolate mid-palate with hints of salt and sea breeze. Light roasted malt throughout. Moderate dark chocolate bitterness. Lingering chocolate sweetness and hints of brine. Medium-full body with a mostly creamy feel. Not bad.

12oz. can poured into a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Dark brown with a nice foamy 1/2" cap.

Smell: Roasted malt and some mocha.

Taste: A solid stout, rich acrid roasted malt with contains both coffee and chocolate flavors. I am getting a slightly salty flavor on the finish, I guess it might be psychosomatic but I definitely believe it's there, just a hint of salt.

Mouthfeel: Feels a little thin on the body;otherwise, it's smooth and drinkable.

Overall: A nice English Stout, good beer, nothing extraordinary, would pair well with seafood I'm sure.

A: Very close to black with a moderate sized light brown fine textured head. Lace is spotty and on the move.

S: Sweet, clean, caramel, cocoa, and yes, oceany. Not sure what I would call it if I didn't know about the oysters. Very refreshing aroma for a stout. Soft around the edges... Milk-like.

T: Taste has a nice pile of creamy caramel, lactose sweetness, and light bitterness. Caramel, cocoa, some coffee, toffee, pine. Doesn't taste salty but there something extra going on that works rather well with this beer....perhaps the oysters again. Milk stout meets salt water toffee.

M: Velvety smooth, soft, nice very fine carbonation levels, and well coating. Leaves a tingly bitterness behind combined possibly with alcohol warming.

O: This is a pretty great stout. I like what they have going on in this.

Pours a black but plenty of ruby notes around the edges. Nice two finger light chocolate head that laces fairly well.

Aroma is chocolate notes, smoked woody hints with dark fruits and hints of sea air.

Taste is nice smokey chocolate malts, almost like liquid smoke added almost tastes like it was aged on wood. Nice dry flavors maybe the smoke peat notes is making it woody. finish is dry with good fruity notes and briny oyster hints.

Mouthfeel is only about medium but smooth until the finish and the carbonation picks up to be peppy.

Overall I am enjoying this stout maybe just in the mood for one but its very flavorable with out being overly heavy. I nice July treat.

A: Pours a dark black with at least a finger of tan head. Retention is good. Chunky lacing present on the glass.

S: Chocolate and malt aroma.

T: More chocolate present from front to back. Slight salty flavor that enhances the chocolate sweetness - the only thing present on the oysters. Sweet finish.

M: Creamy, good carbonation pop on the tongue but on the heavier side.

O: Great brew and really enjoyed.

A: pours black with a finger of khaki head that fades into a thin ring with a little lacing.

S: roasted malts with mild chocolate and sweet cocoa. There are also some nutty and slight coffee aromas.

T: roasted malts here as well with cocoa and semi-sweet chcolate. There are some smokey and char fla ors toward the finish that is lightly bitter.

M: medium-thick body with medium carbonation, this beer is carbonated enough to avoid being watery.

O: an enjoyable beer overall. They oysters don't really come through, but it's a solid stout nonetheless.

Marooned on Hog Island opens to a sweet and slightly salty aroma mixed with more standard stout notes. The stout brings ash, black malt, coffee, tobacco, and chocolate malt, but these are mixed with a briny sweetness, the former from the oyster shells, and the latter adding strong fig, black cherry, blood orange, and even bits of tart raspberry fruit esters. There’s also bits of lemon and lime from the hops, and an underbelly of toast crust and thick brown breads. Added together, these aromas blend wonderfully, and while the stout isn’t as thick and mealy on the nose as could be expected, the unexpected sweet and briny overtones are enticing.

On the tongue, the beer contains stronger stout notes, with ash, tobacco, fresh-ground coffee, chocolate malt, and whole wheat toast crust mixing with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and touches of molasses to form a lovely stout base. Add to this a hint of brine from the oysters, and a selection of fig, prune, raisin, and date dark fruit esters, and the result is very nice. The aftertaste is a more ash-laden continuation of the main mouthful, with threads of sea salt lacing the ash, lingering on the tongue for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is an excellent beer, the oyster notes blending well with the stout to emphasize it, rather than overwhelm it, and the stout itself being of obviously high quality, even without the oyster notes. It can tend to be a bit too sweet, and the ashy notes feel as if they needed a slight boost, but this is still very much worth trying.

Can > Pint Glass
A - Pours a nice dark brown, half a finger of tan head, minor lacing.
S - Roasted chocolate and nutty malts, a tinge of smokiness, and a little of that oyster scent.
T - Rich creamy malt, some nice roasted nutty flavors, a very hidden earthy hop presence, and does finish with some salty ocean-like tastes to it.
M - Very chewy, yet silky, feels rich.
O - To date its the only thing I've enjoyed from 21st. Its a decent stout, and the oyster isnt overpowering. Worth having again.

O: This won't be a regular part of my mix but is good and well worth a try

The day is filled with liquid sunshine and I am subsequently marooned with The CANQuest (TM), which eases some of the pain. CAN you dig it? It's a groovy scene, baby.

From the CAN: "Exhausted by the tedious work and rancid beer, deck swabs O'Sullivan and Freccia abandoned Sir Francis Drake's galleon. Days later, they washed up on a tiny island in Tomales Bay, where they encountered local oyster farmers John and Terry. Soon, these beer mutineers and oyster mercenaries were feasting on roast pig, fresh oysters and goblets of the Captain's finest ale. They could think of worse fates than being ... Marooned on Hog Island"; "Stout brewed with Hog Island sweetwater oyster shells".

The Crack revealed an "Ahoy, me lovely!" moment as it was brimful and a wee bit jumped out to greet me. An inverted Glug was then in order which resulted in a finger of dense deep-tan head with decent retention. Color was a deep, dark-brown, as dark as the night the boys went over the side and about as penetrable as a night at sea. As the head fell, it produced some nice lacing on its way. Nose had a chocolaty sweetness married to a slightly sour salty brininess. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but approaching it. The taste was of roasted malt, not entirely burnt charcoal, but nearby and with a slightly salty cut to the malt. Interesting. Finish was semi-dry, still very roasty, but with a lingering aftertaste of dark chocolate. Very nice, even for a self-avowed hophead.

A: Sits a dense black in the vessel with a one finger dark khaki head with a frothy whipped consistency. Short retention span. Leaves a speckled band lacing.

S: Aroma is light, oyster shells, light roast. The oyster presence is low, wish it was more meaty, then shelly, and lacked a saltiness.

T: Creamy milky roastiness, some hard shell oyster hints. Smooth roast, again wish it had more of a oyster kick, was subtle, and more of a background ambience rather a focal point. The oyster shells did show a bit more later in the drink and with some warming.

M: silky, very smooth and slick, milk stout like, slippery texture and a quiet demeanor of carbonation.

O: Overall the flavor isnt bad, its just a bit middle of the road and safe. If youre gonna do a wild concept beer, dont half ass it, go all out with the oysters otherwise its just a shallow safe attempt to be daring.

A: poured from a 12 oz can (canned on my 30th birthday 11/19/12) into a nonic pint glass, dark brown almost black with a large tan head that lingers leaving good lacing, clear

S: dark chocolate, black malt, coffee, char, seawater, saltiness

T: espresso and dark chocolate up front, sweet character fades to a bitterness quickly with a slightly salty quality, finish is bitter American style stout with a noticeable hop presence, other than a slight saltiness fishiness noted

M: nice body for a stout, full, slightly creamy, higher carbonation than needed, no alcohol noted

O: a good stout full of flavor, oysters may be a bit of a gimmick as I can't really tell any difference between this and other non-oyster stouts, but hell the oysters make it non-vegan so that's a win in my book

First off, like pretty much everything from 21st Amendment, the graphic design on the can is sweet.

Looking like an 8 ball in a snifter, you'd never know it came from a can. Chocolately head bubbles up quickly and dissipates almost as fast, but leaves some froth around the perimeter.

Licorice, plum, and almost a hint of soy sauce on the nose.

Sweeter than expected, some dark fruit notes. Roasty chocolate finish.

Thin bodied and clean finishing for the style. Just a little lingering roasted malt breath.

For me, Ten Fidy is still the gold standard for canned stouts, but this is a close second.

A- pours pitch black with a small foamy tan head with somewhat short retention, leaving just a reign after settling

S- smoky charred malt gives some dried meat character, some mineral notes, a bit woody with a touch of chocolate

T- surprising fruity notes with a bit of fig, mid-palate is slightly sweet with roasted malts and chocolate. The finish is mineraly, giving it a slight salty feel on the tongue, smoky and sweet-yet-dry on the finish

M- medium body and carbonation, foamy-turned-creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish. Alcohol is barely noticeable

O- easy drinking, the oysters give it an interesting mineral flavor and finish. Worth a try once.

Poured from the can into a Walking Man shaker pint. One finger of tan head and some minor lacing. Smell is coffee, dark chocolate, and a whiff of sea breeze.
Taste is rich espresso with maybe a square of dark chocolate melted into it. Never tasted any real hop character within but plenty bitter from whatever source.
Mouthfeel was medium thick with minor carbonation. Leaves a medium dry bitter finish.
Overall a tasty brew and the alcohol is well hidden. As one who has eaten his fair share of fresh oysters both cooked and raw this beer only showed the oyster ingredient in the aroma. So oyster haters need not fear this stout. One of 21st Amendments better beers.

Appearance: Black glass shows a thin ribbon of ruby at the edge with back lighting. Tiny carbonation streams feed a fast dying thin brown cover that holds a halo, but doesn't lace.

Smell: Earthy leafy hops on a thin ribbon of malt sweetness.

Taste: Big malt flavors take the stage pushing the almost tonic bitter hops to the downward side of the teeter-totter. A nice balance lets a lot of flavors come through. A plum jam fruitiness, a hint of tobacco in the dark roasted grain. A hint of soy sauce soured grain shows off the complex malt bill (had to check the website: Pale, Crystal, Rolled Oats, Carafa, Chocolate Malt, White Wheat).

Mouthfeel: There's a bit of chalky dryness in the finish that has to be the oyster shells. Makes an almost gritty end that begs for the next sip.

Overall: Big complex tasty beer, but not really in line with most stouts, or oyster stouts I've had. I could see pairing this with a lot of different foods, or just sipping after dinner. Tasty!

L- Dark brown almost black topped with a tan head that fades quickly to a ring but leaves a few spotts of lace on the glass.

S- Roasted malt, caramel, toffee, chocolate, coffee, and chocolate.

T- Chocolate and coffee malts right away, well balanced and not in competition with each other, a bit of caramel sweetness provides a nice counterpoint. I'm not getting any oyster flavor, maybe that is a good thing. Finish is dry with a lingering final note of coffee.

M- More than medium in body and medium in carbonation, creamy and silky in the mouth.

O- Interesting beer, it has some nice stuff going on in it, and if you run across it you should check it out. The 7.9% ABV was a bit of a surprise I was thinking it was a bit lower than that.

Served from the can into a globed glass

A- Poured a dark drown with a fluffy mocha colored head that dissipated quickly and left no lace.

S- Huge sweet chocolate notes and roasted barley, very bready and wheat like qualities, caramel

T- Whoa, big salty flavor up front and through the whole sip and lingers. I get that sweet chocolate note and rosted barley from the aroma. Some bready and caramel notes. A little bit of sourness and twang similar to Guinness.

M- Medium body, smooth, quite creamy and finishes dry.

O- A very aromatic and unique stout. The salty oyster quality in the flavor was a bit much, although it did subside a little more as it warmed up some more.
