Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
You might not expect a Saison in winter. But the enemy didn’t expect Washington to cross the icy Delaware, either. Expectations be damned, we say. We’re sneaking up on winter with a boatload of bravado and this Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Dry hopped with whole organic cardamom pods, our Saison has an assertive spiciness. In your face, winter.

6/21...pale yellow, cloudy/hazy, foam settles out. Faint malt/yeast nose, but very light and non-distinctive, which is odd for a saison. Citrus grain yeast flavor. Subtle spice that I assume is the cardamon. Clean and fast moving. Not earth shattering, but tasty enough.

Poured from the can into a pint glass at the World of Beer in Pooler, GA. I am not a huge fan of Saisons, but I did find this one really lacking in the taste department. I normally love 21st Amendment beers.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a snifter.

Pours a hazy dark yellow. Very cloudy and murky. About one finger of head that dissipates almost immediately into a thin film.

Nose is a little citric with a hint of banana like yeast. A few earthy and wood odors after.

A very quick initial tartness in flavor that quickly faded to a grassy, oak flavor. Slight hints of banana. Very strong alcohol flavor on the swallow.

Very light and bubbly in the mouth yet somehow still sticky at the same time. Has a bit of heat from alcohol.

Served from the can in a Lagunitas mason jar.

If Washington crossed the Delaware in the Summer... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear straw (minorly hazed) topped by a finger of relatively short-lived lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises powdered sugar, lemon rind, mild cracked wheat, and mild cardamom. The taste is a blast of cardamom backed by a slightly wheaty melange of Belgian yeast, lemon peel, and Band-Aid-y phenols. The body is a rather light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a decent enough saison that's ruined by the heavy emphasis on cardamom. I feel the spice could have done well as a complement, but its central position was way too much and drowned out everything else.

12 oz can

Pours about a half inch white head into my pint glass. Quickly fizzing away. Lacing looks like it could be alright though. The body is extremely cloudy, visibility is basically zero. Body is yellow in color, with some orange. It almost looks like lemonade. Carbonation looks about medium. So far an ok looking beer.

Very spicy on the nose. Maybe the spiciest beer I’ve ever smelled. There is a lot of that cardamom going on here. Also, not a lot of Belgian yeast aroma to overwhelm the nose, which is surprising. Light scent of lemon. A smalll yeast aroma hiding in there, but again, super small for a saison. Aroma borderlines almost a ginger smell. Aroma is light, but I’m starting to think that might be due to using a pint glass, rather than a snifter or something else. Overall a very nice aroma.

The flavor is good, but a little underwhelming. I need more of it. You get that spice up front, cardamom. Followed by the fainted yeast, slight banana. A little zesty, lemon is very mild. Finish is somewhat dry. Not really any bitterness in here. It's a tasty beer, but the flavor just isn't big enough. Close to a 4, but not there.

The mouth is ok. Carbonation is about medium. Body is just a hair lighter than I want in a saison, but it kinda fits that lighter flavor. Not bad, but I’d want something thicker, with a bigger flavor to go along with it. This seems like more of a session saison, and the mouthfeel accompanies that, and I’m not a huge fan of that aspect.

After a while the body filled out, so I think I’ll actually bump it up to a 4.

The drinkability is very high, this is a super sessionable beer.

Overall this is a good beer, the yeast characters are coming out more. I consider bumping flavor up to a 4, but I think doing a 4 overall is good enough. It’s a good, easy drinking saison. Definitely highlights the spice, but other than that it's a good, safe beer.

The appearance turned out really bad, head died completely, and there was zero lacing.

Pours a cloudy, straw color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and poor lacing. Smells of strong earthiness, yeast, pale malt, slight hops, floral notes, wheat, and a hint of citrus. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable dryness. Tastes of spices (ginger), earthiness, pale malt, yeast, slight hop, floral notes, and a hint of citrus. Overall, spice and earthiness dominate, weak appearance, good complexity, body, and aroma.
