Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
You might not expect a Saison in winter. But the enemy didn’t expect Washington to cross the icy Delaware, either. Expectations be damned, we say. We’re sneaking up on winter with a boatload of bravado and this Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Dry hopped with whole organic cardamom pods, our Saison has an assertive spiciness. In your face, winter.

This is a nice saison. I was afraid the cardamom was gonna be overpowering but it really just adds a general spice character to the beer that plays well off the yeast. A nice full flavor and crisp. Much more spiciness than tart fruitiness. yb

Looks: poured from can. light amber with some haze. thick head.
Smell/taste: lemon-pepper, lemon peel with some funk. Coriander seems subtle.
Feel: on the lighter side, slick.
Overall: liked it, would get again. Good alternative to a wheat beer for late winter/early spring.

The pour is slightly hazy with a head that said goodbye rather swiftly - carbonation is fairly lively. Came out of my main fridge cold so gave this a few minutes to warm before starting to dive in. The spice and yeast notes give up a nice yield when getting a whiff of this. Even more so as it warms. First few sips don't give up too much in terms of the cardamom, and the feel at first is slightly restrained. Pepper and cloves try to pop out to take over the show here but blend in overall to what is quite a balanced saison. There's little to no funk here, but the aftertaste leaves a pleasing spiciness, with hints of ginger and plantain coming in (you were expecting me to say banana right? Well more savory than that really). Bit of a citrus zing cuts through the spice and slightly bready yeast elements.

Half way through drinking this I put together some queso style dip with chipotle cheddar (at my wife's request) and found the beer to complement it fantastically well. I think this is one that I will likely enjoy better with food rather than on its' own. I can see Indian curries, grilled meats and rich casseroles pairing up well here.

Had 2 pints from a tap at a local bar. Pleasantly surprised that this tasted like a "real" Saison to me, even when served on the cool side. Plenty here to enjoy; taste, aroma, mouth feel.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish tulip

L: Cloudy light golden pour. 2.5 fingers of foamy white head. Falls quickly... 360 degree rim of lace.

S: Citrus... lemon and hay mixed with spice.

T/F: Off-sweet and citrusy to start. Lemon rind and tangerine. Fresh cut grass and herbs... not detecting the cardamom per se, but spice for sure. A little yeasty. Medium in body... well carbonated and zesty. Refreshing. Finish is sticky and reminiscent of a white wine.

O: A very citrus/lemon forward saison and quite tasty. I could see this going great on a hot summer day by the pool. A very easy drinker.

For a saison, this is oddly light in color, and even in taste, it has a tartness to it that's unexpected. But the spiciness it has is just perfect. The can says it's brewed with cardamom, and that must be what gives it a nice effect that combines a light and crisp summer beer with a stronger bodied session beer. The combination is nice.

Pours golden with yellow highlights and a thick creamy head of white foam that is too lazy to fall. As it sits there tempting and teasing the cardamom that has been added to this beer gives the nose a bit of perfumey buoyancy. The nose exudes spice, citrus and a sumptuous breaddiness . The sweet perfume lifts the rest of the nose to you without overtaking it completely so I liked that. Pepper and plenty of spice, plus a sweet herbal. The yeast adds some sweet funk of it's own and that smells earthy to me. I thought that the scent of this beer was sensational and very old world. It smells very beery. IS beery a word? As citrusy as it is, it reminds me of bread not fruit. Lemon is light but pervasive.

Taste follows the nose all the way. Breaddy, crisp malt accented by tiny prickly bubbles that bring a somewhat surprisingly hoppy middle to you. Herbal notes and generous citrus finish this with a small tartness that is characteristic in the saison. It also has plenty of dry earthy funk on the palate and I think that sensationalizes the malt breaddiness as well. The cardamom offers a citrusy quality of it's own but leaves the perfume on the nose rather than on the palate which keeps the malt prominent in the finish. The hops are more succulent than you think at first and just when you think the beer is not really dry, it is.

I loved this and have paired it with all kinds of food since I bought it. Crisp, refreshing and a very satisfying malt. The difference I think the cardamom makes in this beer is that it's perfume actually increases the perception of dryness and marries well with the yeast they have chosen. It is not brut dry because it is just too hoppy for that, but it's dry enough. The hops bitter the finish just a little and then as you drink , just a little more. Soft and juicy hop flavors. This was rustic and charming with a lightly sweet funk that resounds in the finish and in the aftertaste with the malt.
