Had from fresh bottles right from the closed case, only about 40 days old.

Fresh-Pretzel like bitterness. Clean and complex.

Highly recommended. World class German Pilsener.

500ml can into nonic pint. best before june 18, 2015. consumed on june 24, 2014

a: three and a half fingers of fast-dissipating off-white head on top of a transparent pale yellow body

s: grassy crackery malts, slight citrus. pretty strong and inviting aroma here

t: follows the nose. malts all around (bread, crackers), as well as a prominent herbal hop bitterness that's hard to ignore and nears being harsh. hints of lemony citrus notes. shy spice flavours. overall this is clean and very hoppy

m: light bodied, medium carbonation, hard dry finish

o: a really bitter but great pilsener. i don't usually drink lagers but i enjoyed this

500 mL can picked up at the LCBO; best before June 18 2015. Served well-chilled.

Pours a clear, pale straw-yellow colour, topped with one finger of sparkling, fizzy white head that wastes no time fizzling itself right out of existence. A narrow collar and a swath of lace remain - it's a pretty typical-looking Euro lager. The aroma is inviting enough, and certainly appropriate for the style - lots of grainy, crackery pale malts, some honey sweetness, and a wisp of grassy hops. Nothing fancy, but it works for me...

The same can be said of the flavour profile - this is a pretty standard pils with no real surprises or serious flaws to discuss. Grainy pale malts dominate at first; somewhat bready or biscuity, with a light note of lemon. The finish is where the undoubtedly noble hop bill starts to shine - quite grassy, almost herbaceous, with a mildly skunky feel about them. Finishes dry. Light-bodied and easy to drink, with crisp, biting carbonation of the sort you'd expect from a pale lager.

[Updated Nov 28 2016]

Jever Pilsener is refreshing, approachable, and highly sessionable - in essence, a prototypical German pils, though probably a bit hoppier than average. An otherwise unremarkable beer, but like many German pilseners imported into this province, it's still pretty good value for the price - in fact, at $2.00 a pint, this is one of the best value beers on the shelves, at least in Ontario. It has become a regular purchase for me over the past few years, and will likely remain my go-to pilsener for the foreseeable future.

Final Grade: 3.75, a respectable B+.

Bottle purchased and poured into a generic pint glass at Magpie Irish Pub in Rochester, NY.

After looking at the bottle, it looks like it best by last year. Uh oh. Let's see how it tastes anyway, and if it held up.

It pours a very clear light yellow, with some amber tinges. There is barely any head, and barely any lacing.

Smells very faint, like some grassy hops, some slight skunk, and a little bit of sweetness.

The taste is similar, and a bit stronger. There is a pleasant classic pilsner hop bite up front, slightly peppery and grassy, but the finish on the beer just doesn't quite work- the malt is a bit too sweet, and there's some slight skunk flavor.

Light bodied, crisp mouthfeel, medium carbonation, very drinkable.

This was one was just ok- had some good elements up front- the hop flavors- but finished weak, with clearly old malt flavors and some skunkiness.

A- golden straw with a pure white head. Not as lively looking as other Pilseners I've had. Anyway, nice head retention and great lacing.

S- biscuity grain, a little skunky. Not a good start here.

T- better than the smell. A little sweeter than expected, with a decent herbal/spicy hop bitterness. Really pleasant actually.

M- light, gentle carbonation, refreshing. The finish is watery.

O- aside from being light struck, it wasn't bad.

DATE TASTED: April 26, 2014... GLASSWARE: Jever pokal... OCCASION: revisiting an old favorite... APPEARANCE: misty, murky golden yellow body; rocky, sporadic white head laces with wispy tentacles; medium effervescence... AROMA: holy Hallertau! metallic iron hammer a la Thor or a nine-iron to the nostrils--subtler hints of fragrant apple and pear with a bit of dough...a stronger, more forceful pilsner... PALATE: medium-bodied, crisp, almost biting mouthfeel--softens at the finish; highly drinkable, with a more lagerish body than expected...TASTE: apple/pear and good ol' Hallertau; a rather simple formula that also gives off fragrant waves of other fruits... OVERALL: a pleasant variation on the Bavarian theme--a pilsner that is a bit less clean and crisp, but retains enough of its style to cleanse and pucker; refreshing yet substantial...
