750ml bottle into snifter. Batch 2/2013, which means I’m probably in trouble.

A: Pours a deep dark beer bottle brown with a finger of very dense dark tan head that quickly faded into a fuzzy collar that left a few thick streaks of lace down the glass.
S: Huge burnt peat, bandaid, a dark roast on the nose. I get some ripe banana after the pour. Disappointing.
T: Tart grape and cherry skins mixed with dark malt and cola flavors, smoked bandaid, and peat. The peat and phenols are not bad as the nose, either that or the clean tartness is overpowering it better than other chlorophenolic tome beers I’ve had. The finish has a linger flavor of tart and tannic fruit skins.
M: Not as sour as I was expecting given the name, but the tartness is clean and pleasant. Medium-light body, slick and clean mouthfeel.
O: Not quite a drainpour but definitely another 2013 quality control issue. Aside from that, this was good but underwhelming as a saison.

Blind tasting.

Weird...but with Fantome, you just never know what you're going to see next. A flip-top bottle that opened with a huge *pop.* Murky pour, dark coffee brown, with a wispy off-white head that settled to a collar, and left a few strands of lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma, obvious hit of smoked meat up front (I'm thinking cherrywood-smoked malts), peat, tobacco ash, dry rub spices. Smokey taste, as expected from the nose, cured meat, tobacco ash, roasty dark malts, some dry cocoa flavor, peppery spice and hints of something vegetal, with a bit of fruity astringency. Medium body. Pretty awkward and messy overall...I wouldn't come near tackling a whole bottle by myself. But it was nice to give it a try.

Overall, a rather interesting combination of elements that I am not used to seeing in a saison. The sourness is welcomed but in parallel with some bizarre smoky jerky-like flavors with wheat and biscuit. I will say it grew on me as it opened up but definitely one of the most bizarre saisons I have experienced

Thanks to Ryan for sharing this oddity. Served in a taster glass at Tom's place.

A - White foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and specks of lace. Murky dark brown body.

S - Odd, smokey, light meat and peat notes, some roasted malts, odd astringent tea note, peppery yeast, light cocoa, and some tobacco?

T - Weird tea astringency and cigarette butt flavors, with notes of roast, char, and smoke. A faint Saison yeast presence well in the background.

M - Smooth, medium body, pleasant carbonation, bready texture, with a mildly yeasty finish. No discernible alcohol presence, which is impressive. I had no idea that this was 10%; would have guessed 6-7% to be honest. By far the best thing about this beer.

D - Very strange and largely unsuccessful. One of the worst Fantôme offerings I've had in awhile. I was able to put down a few ounces, but no one went back for more of this one. If you really like tobacco you might enjoy this...maybe.
