Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Père Noël is a Christmas ale, though very different from any other Christmas ales you might know. While most Christmas ales are rich & sweet, this one is amber-coloured, 7% vol. Alc. strong and tastes quite bitter. The complex taste is completed with the addition of liquorice. In the recipe we can also find pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt, Brewers Gold hops and Hallertau hops.

Poured in chimay chalice.

Looks are definitely this brew's strong point, a glorious hazy body, full of creamy sediment topped with a decent head.
The retention of which is a little below par, benefit of the doubt, I should have selected a tulip shaped delivery system.....luckily I bought two of these beers :-)

Aroma is subtle, almost a light malt mixed with sherbet.....weird I know, but until you stick your snowzer in the glass, it is a bit hard to describe.

Taste is a grower, first hit is very bitter, second and third quaffs and hints of malt and smokey tobacco come through....I am a none smoker, but it definitely gets better as you drink.

Feel is a touch sharp on the tongue, but leaves a wanting aftertaste sensation in the trap.

Overall, you'll either think this is a belter, or else sub standard....given it is Belgian, it can never be sub standard, and it is unlike anything I have ever tasted prior.

I may tweak this review on the second bottle.

.....should add I served this at about 10 degrees.

This beer is the first that has me thinking the BA weighting is slightly out....I think this is a 4/5 beer every day of the week, but because the look and aroma are slightly higher than the taste, that has dragged the score down.....perhaps if taste and overall are the important factors, then 0.10 score could be given? Just an idea, would have given this 3.9 for taste, but psychologically didn't want to give it a 4.

A: Pours slightly hazy, dark golden almost Amber, 1 finger if white head dissipates slowly but leaves almost no lacing. 3.5

S: Aroma is sweet fruity esters, Belgian candies sugar, bubble gum. Subtle white pepper spice. Super subtle booze. 3.75

T: Taste remains sweet but is more balanced as the spice is bigger. Lots of bubble gum, some fruits esters, black and white pepper. 3.5

M/D: Full bodied, a bit syrupy, carbonation quite low, drinkability is ok. 3.5

O: It's ok but I don't love it. Worth drinking but I likely wouldn't purchase again. 3.5

A creative rendition of Christmas ales.
When stacked against the bruin competition, the blondes have an advantage... at least of differentiation.
This one has nice suds, to boot.
As for Aroma, difficult to describe; but great to enjoy. It's all blended by great yeast, with intrigue to boot.
Taste. The hops come through, but the yeast intrigue and the malt are allowed to do their boot.
Feel. Most intriguing is how the hops don't interfere with excellence and aren't used as a boot.
I will have Pere Noel again, if I do the boot-work to find it.

Pours a hazy light caramel sauce color with a fluffy snow-white head that gushes to a full four fingers. Aromas and flavors of Belgian yeast, with lots of spice (coriander, clove) and banana up front. Alcohol is assertive on the nose and palate. Quite bitter, with a dry and slightly astringent finish. Not your grandfather's Christmas ale, but very nice nonetheless.

Expires 23/07/17. Hazy orange color with three fingers of lush off-white head. Long lasting with decent lacing.

Sweet aroma with apple cider up front, slight Christmas spices and some yeast and subtle grassy hops behind.

The taste is much more bitter, almost aspirin-like, with the addition of some slight caramel malt and a dry aftertaste. Relatively light, highly carbonated mouthfeel. Sort of middle of the road to my taste.
