Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Père Noël is a Christmas ale, though very different from any other Christmas ales you might know. While most Christmas ales are rich & sweet, this one is amber-coloured, 7% vol. Alc. strong and tastes quite bitter. The complex taste is completed with the addition of liquorice. In the recipe we can also find pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt, Brewers Gold hops and Hallertau hops.

A creative rendition of Christmas ales.
When stacked against the bruin competition, the blondes have an advantage... at least of differentiation.
This one has nice suds, to boot.
As for Aroma, difficult to describe; but great to enjoy. It's all blended by great yeast, with intrigue to boot.
Taste. The hops come through, but the yeast intrigue and the malt are allowed to do their boot.
Feel. Most intriguing is how the hops don't interfere with excellence and aren't used as a boot.
I will have Pere Noel again, if I do the boot-work to find it.

Pours a hazy light caramel sauce color with a fluffy snow-white head that gushes to a full four fingers. Aromas and flavors of Belgian yeast, with lots of spice (coriander, clove) and banana up front. Alcohol is assertive on the nose and palate. Quite bitter, with a dry and slightly astringent finish. Not your grandfather's Christmas ale, but very nice nonetheless.

Expires 23/07/17. Hazy orange color with three fingers of lush off-white head. Long lasting with decent lacing.

Sweet aroma with apple cider up front, slight Christmas spices and some yeast and subtle grassy hops behind.

The taste is much more bitter, almost aspirin-like, with the addition of some slight caramel malt and a dry aftertaste. Relatively light, highly carbonated mouthfeel. Sort of middle of the road to my taste.

L: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had a dirty amber color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was an inch of foamy head that lasted a fair amount of time. Below average lacing.

S: A fair aroma of Belgian yeast, apples, and spices.

T: Tasted of several types of fruit, including apples and a little citrus; some spices (nutmeg, pepper), a good amount of Belgian yeast, light malt notes, more hops than I expected, a aspirin / medicinal quality in the finish, and a tinge of licorice. Not a bad flavor, but it's uneven; the spices should have been more apparent, and the medicinal quality should not have been included at all. Uneven, but not bad.

F: A well-carbonated beer with an overly dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an uneven beer, but it definitely has its good attributes. Worth a look.

Poured from bottle into wine glass(all I had) nice 1 finger head, recedes but never goes away, Nice lacing. Dark golden amber in the glass, yeast in suspension. Mild Belgian yeast esters on the nose with some spice on the nose. Taste different than the smell, getting some muted fruit, slight spiciness, missing the standard Belgian yeast taste, but has a nice spicy dry finish, good mouthfeel.

Appearance: Gold in color with a large white billowing head
Aroma: Cracker malt with a small cheesy note
Taste: The taste follows the nose with less isovalerlic character and with more depth of the malt character along with an interesting melange of minerality, oxidation, and a grassy/floral note on the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium-light mouthfeel with high carbonation
Overall: This beer is past its expiration date and the degradation of the flavors show that quite clearly and seems to be lost between a pale ale and a Christams ale
