Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Guldenberg is a tripel-style abbey ale containing 8.5% vol. Alc. Its colour is blond and it’s made of pale malt with the addition of candy sugar. The bitterness comes from the Hallertau hops we use as bitterhop and as aromahop. On top of that we use dry – hopping techniques with the same hops which give the ale its unique flavour and aroma and its perfect balance between sweet and bitter. The name came from the former Guldenberg Abbey in Wevelgem, the village of birth of Nino, one of the brewers. According to data in Flandria Illustrata ale was brewed here in the past.

12 oz. on tap at Beer Revolution in Calgary. A hazy light orange color with a half-finger of frothy white head (looks like one could get a better effect here with a pour at home). Aroma is dry, phenolic, citric, and floral ... Comes off as a classic tripel if perhaps on the hoppy side of the style guidelines. Palate is a robust honeyed breakfast cereal malt backbone which does not stick around long, washed away by green apple/pear, flower water, lemon, orange, and clove. I'm also getting a nutty note like some saisons and a herbal element as well. A tannic dryness pervades the whole proceedings. Not getting much alcohol early but this emerges more over time. Subtle pineapple and perhaps mango hidden in the background. Mid-range body and rather fizzy. I am wanting to pronounce this one of the better tripels I've sampled but something is holding me back. In any event, well worth one's time.

Pours a glowing golden, slightly hazy color, with a decent head.

Shows subtle aromas of slightly sour, funky yeast with floral hints.

Taste is selected by dough, smooth yeast, with a subtle faded hop graininess, among spicy cloves, anise and orange peel. The mouthfeel is defined by a slick, well integrated hop bitterness, which shines during the finish, without overwhelming the yeast, while biscuity become more potent.

I enjoyed this 11.2oz bottle chilled in a goblet, review taken from notes.

The color is brillian golden with 2 fingers of white head with fine bead and visibly carbonated with thick lace stickage. The smell has lots of yeast esters with tropical scent and light lemon curd fragrance with mild herbal smell and gentle yeast phenolics with a light alcohol type fruit ester. The feel is very nicely balance with yeast spiciness and hop bitterness with light malt sweetness and subtle alcohol presence with a dry tangy finish, moderately carbonated throughout.

The taste has a very tangy fruity and light lemony tropical flavor with tangerine and mild peppery/slightly herbal hops with a mild sweetness in the malt profile. The yeast is the dominant flavor with a mild earthy and dried fruit element and subtle alcohol in the taste as it finishes dry. Overall I consider this a very good Tripelwith nice hops and yeast flavors. Easy to quaff for an 8% Belgian, I think it is another fine brew from De Ranke.
