Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Guldenberg is a tripel-style abbey ale containing 8.5% vol. Alc. Its colour is blond and it’s made of pale malt with the addition of candy sugar. The bitterness comes from the Hallertau hops we use as bitterhop and as aromahop. On top of that we use dry – hopping techniques with the same hops which give the ale its unique flavour and aroma and its perfect balance between sweet and bitter. The name came from the former Guldenberg Abbey in Wevelgem, the village of birth of Nino, one of the brewers. According to data in Flandria Illustrata ale was brewed here in the past.

Hazy golden colour, medium head with short retention. Good lace. Aroma of peaches, spices, herbs, pepper, fennel. Unfortunately, as you're drinking, it fades and ends in cardboard. Round palate, thick and creamy. Good carbonation. Taste of caramel, fruits, spices, herbs. Same thing as the aroma, turns to unpleasant notes. I had three bottles, all with the same problem. Subject to revision sometime in the future.

Pours a cloudy gold with a huge white head. The head does stick around a bit, leaving a lot of lacing on the glass, and has that typical Belgian toughness, meaning it will divert the flow of slowly poured beer.

Strong smell of yeast, also picking up notes of citrus and pepper spice.

Fruity up front, mainly apple, pear, and apricot. I am also picking up some Belgian yeast funk, and finishes with a decent amount of hop bitterness.

Feel is smoother than expected from the amount of carbonation.

Kind of a different take on the style, I think the hops are a bit much for this style, scaling them back a bit would allow the fruit and pepper spice I expect to come through more. It's not bad example of the style, just not an outstanding one.

It's a deep cloudy gold with a big foamy white head that leaves small sticky lacing. The aroma is sweet from the grains and slightly spicy. The taste to me was just a nondescript bitter primarily with small amounts a sweet and spicy. The body is light and faintly carbonated

Bottled and possibly bottle conditioned
Slightly hazy golden body with spotty white head
Slightly funky peachy aroma
That's the flavour too
Dangerously drinkable with the mf and overall impression of the beer

Appearance: Cloudy, deep golden, orangey colour. Lively carbonation. Solid, two finger, white head.

Aroma: Smells fantastic with lots of orange peel, very fruity. Clove and bubble gum. Aroma is very fresh.

Taste: Orange peel upfront, very fruity, then a little bit of sweetness before a slightly bitter and spicy finish.

Mouth feel: Medium to full bodided, gentle on the palate despite all the bubbles in the glass. A little oily.

Overall: An absolutely fantastic Tripel. Unique yet familiar. Will definitely buy this one again.

On tap at The Sovereign in DC. I thought this tripel was lacking all around. No spice, phenolics or even yeast flavors. No complexity at all. It was cloudy and had a minimal head.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Despite zero agitation, this beer can gushing out of the bottle upon opening, resulting with a bronze color and a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of yeast, fruits. Taste is apples, vinegar, some barnyard qualities. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this beer was a disappointment.

L: Dark honey, nice head, peachy color
S: Funky wild yeast, rotting flowers, lemon peel, coriander, sour white wine
T: Lemony, yeasty, clean tasting, almost saison like
F: Good feel, high carbonation that finishes smooth
O: Not my favorite Tripel but definitly clean and refreshing, great with a white fish dinner, glad I tried it but prefer Tripel Karmeliet a little better.
