Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
From the brewery: "Cuvee is an ale of mixed origin like many Belgian breweries used to make. The production process is nearly the same as for the Kriek, the difference being that no cherries are added. It's a naturally acidified ale in which we try to reach the perfect balance between sweet and sour. This amber-coloured ale contains 7% vol. Alc. and can age really nice."

On-draught @ Moeder Lambic.

HEAD: Off-white colour. Soft-looking. Retention is above average - ~3 minutes. Leaves inconsistent lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Auburn colour. Translucent. Nontransparent. I see no yeast within.

It's a bit darker (I.e. more Amber) than I anticipated, but then I suppose it's about right for a cuvee of a vague sour ale and fuck knows what else (De Ranke's website is deliciously vague regarding this beer).

AROMA: Sourness is mild - maybe a 4/10 in terms of intensity. Red apple. A kiss of acetic acid. Faint muted oak wood. Reticent white wine. A hint of funkiness. Hay.

Suggests an acidic mildly sour brew with a pleasant balanced taste.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Acidic red apple. Mild sourness (~3-4/10 in terms of intensity). A bit of lactic smackiness. Fruity esters. Neutral pale malts. Rustic hay evokes a bit of a barnyard character. Subtle funkiness. Lemongrass.

Balanced and enjoyable. Truly a gestalt whole of a beer - which is especially rare in a cuvee. Good depth of flavour. Impressive subtlety and intricacy. I'm digging this one.

Acidic, smooth, somewhat dry, perfectly carbonated, light to medium-bodied. There's a neat harmony of texture and taste here, with the acidity coaxing out additional depth of flavour from the nuanced sourness. The lactic smackiness is wonderful on the palate.

Not oily, gushed, harsh, rough, astringent, hot, or scratchy.

OVERALL: An unsung treat of a Belgian beer, Cuvee de Ranke is one of the more balanced, natural blends I've tried. A lovely sour that warrants more attention than it gets. I already want more, but its high price point (even in Belgium) will likely delay a second purchase.

Cuvée De Ranke

Appearance: Dark orange-yellow, small head, and some lacing.

Smell: Acidic sourness, grapeskins, and grapefruit.

Taste: Acidic sour bitterness and grapeskins.

Mouthfeel: Medium.

Overall:
The sourness comes quick and then fades just as fast. It would go great with a meal.

Best by 06/2016:
Pours turbid amber with etched whites atop with a solid rim of the same fluffed bubble. Nice apple, copper, acetic vinegar, hints of lemon and funky hay and soil. Nicely tart up front and with a bitterness I’d not anticipated and some metallic and astringent character. Some leafy, vinous character along some unrefined vinegar. Thin bodied with hi carb and watering finish. An okay beer, at an okay price ($17/750ml). Actually a very sessionable, approachable beer with a sour character and a lambic twist. I would enjoy this with a friend at lunch time over a couple sanwiches with a friend on a nice warm Spring day.

Poured at a recent BA tasting event. Pours a muddy golden yellow with no head. Nose is oak, pinot, and chalk. Taste is about 4/10 on the pucker-meter, tastes like sour apple cider. Barrel flavors are present and there is a nice complexity. Acidic. Light on the palate, quite drinkable.
