The heaviest ale on our menu with a very rich taste, coming from the six different kinds of malt we use. These malts also give it that rich, dark, nearly black colour. The royal doses of Challenger and Saaz hops bring the typical balance between sweet and bitter.bitter.

On tap at The Sovereign in Washington, DC.
This smells like char, molasses, coffee, dark fruit – raisin, plum, dried grape, etc, with lots of roast.
This feels pretty much like a straight up stronger dry stout, as there’s very little Belgian or saison character to this. I thought it might kind of taste like a dark saison, but it did not. There’s a very pleasant roastiness with a touch of smoke, a bouquet of dark fruits, such as plum, raisin, and grape, with a charred, almost crème brulee-ish sweetness.
This is medium bodied, clean, slightly creamy, and very drinkable.
I really like the small handful of De Ranke beers that I’ve had. I wish I saw them in more places.

An excellent, well-crafted Belgian strong dark ale. The sort of beer I don’t often reach for, but appreciate all the same. Pours a dark auburn, with lots of cherry-dark chocolate featured on the flavor profile. A wonderful sipper in good company. Enjoyed from the tap.

I had this on draft 8/29/23 @ the Hopleaf.
Black/brown appearance.
Nice tan head; nice lacing remained.
Plum, fresh tobacco & mild cream notes in the nose.
Creamy, medium thick mouthfeel.
Plum, cream & mild clove flavors up front; leather notes on the finish.
A bit creamy, a bit dry...balanced & enjoyable.

Chestnut brown; translucent on the edges, with an opaque center. Head fades fast, with little aesthetic residual. The aroma is mild, comprised of sweet fruitiness and alcohol. Excellent flavor with a classic combination of yeast snd malt. Mouthfeel is also exceptional, providing a sensory experience comparable to an imperial stout.

Dark brown appearance with a beige head that quickly recedes to a collar. Raisin, stone fruit, malt, bread notes. Moderate to full body, medium carbonation.
