Style: Lambic - Fruit

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Based on an extinct yet favorite tipple of the De Ranke owners, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke Kriek emulates the famed Oud Kriekenbier from the defunct Crombé brewery in Zottegem. De Ranke Kriek is a mixture of two blended soured pale ales and Girardin lambic, all steeped in whole fresh cherries from Poland and then aged for six months. A unique and much sought after Kriekenbier.

A 750ml bottle with a best before date of 26th August 2021. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A very nice clear ruby red colour with a just under two finger pinkish head that dissipated fairly quickly while leaving only sparse lacing.

Aroma: Sour, tart, funky, vinegar, musty with only hints of cherry.

Taste: Tart and sour, lots of lemon, lemon zest, vinegar and funk with only a hint of cherries.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with moderate to light carbonation.

Overall: This was ok but the Belgian Sour Ale felt like it overpowered everything else, such that there was hardly any cherry in either the aroma or taste, which was not so good for a Kriek type beer.

I usually don't like krieks, because there's too much fruit. But this one is different, much more balanced, less sour than most krieks. It is complex and a delight to drink. The best kriek out there to me.

L - Hazy red

S - funky horse blanket, vinous

T - Brett delight. A bit of cherry but a lot of citrus mostly lemon. A bit hoppy for a kriek. The malt is present but very lightly. Very complex taste

M - Subtle carbonation

O - An unique beer. A brett forward kriek. It has nothing to compare to 3 fonteinen or Cantillon krieks. It's sour at first but it's not too sour. A must try

750ml bottle. Expires 12/8/20 printed on the cap (bottled in 2015). Pours the color of ruby grapefruit juice with a hazy clarity and copious tiny bubbles effervescing in solution. Head is bright white and frothy and quickly dissipates towards the edges. Nose is a bit dull - muted cherry and allspice. Taste is a bit reminiscent of a Yankee candle - spicy, cinnamon, waxy and dull cherry. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with an almost still carbonation. Overall - meh. Not much cherry present for a kriek. All and all somewhat disappointing.

Better than expected. Some sweetness but enough dryness to be pretty good. I'll skip the details as there are plenty of reviews.

On-draught @ Moeder Lambic.

Lovely kriek I wish I had more time to write about...tart cherries, powdered sugar. Soft mouthfeel, refreshing and mellow. Balanced and we'll built. Great tartness, Subtle sourness. Good depth of flavour.

Really a must-try in the kriek style. I need to revisit this in finer grain - it's just an excellent brew.

75cl bottle. Deep burgundy red, with a medium height, light red head that gives way to a very thin lacing. Smells of lambic funk, macerated cherries, vinegar, cider. Tastes sour and a funky, mouldy bitter, with notes of sour cherries, sherry and a touch of vinegar. Light bodied and medium carbonation. A very interesting lambic, not as dry or as sour as the ones from Cantillon, and maybe a bit more complex.
