Brewed by:
Gritty McDuff's Brewing Company
Maine, United States

Style: Irish Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Gritty McDuff's Red Claws Ale is a what the Brits call a fine session beer: a smooth ale, not too strong and full of flavor. Red Claws Ale has a dark red-amber color; a full, round malt palate; nutty and roasted accents, and a delicate hop flavor that whispers with just a hint of floral finish. The perfect ale for a long afternoon in the pub with good friends and traditional fare.

Pint on tap at Portland Expo, home of your Maine Red Claws, of course.

Appearance: It's a clear red-amber with a one-finger cream head. Nice looking beer. Some decent lacing on way down. Carbonation better than average.

Aroma: Smells of caramel and malts. Also some tea and buttered toast.

Taste: Pretty tasty beer. It has a slightly sweet chocolate, caramel type of taste, with some dark tea and bread in the background. Almost a nougat-like note on the finish.

Mouthfeel: It's slightly thinner than a typical Irish red, but not to the point where it feels watery or weak.

Overall: Irish reds tend to be drinkable croud-pleasers, at least to my palate, and this is one. Easy drinking and flavorful enough to keep you interested. Not full of alcohol or hops; definitely an easy session ale. Much, much better than the other Gritty's offerings I've had. Solid sportsball brew.
