Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maine's Best IPA is a unique blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Plenty of Munich and caramalts are used to give the beer that golden hue. There are fifty-six pounds of Cascade Hops used in each 50 barrel batch that is brewed! Then we finish the beer with Willamette & Warrior Hops, (Warrior is a high-alpha acid variety of hops).

Had this on tap at the Freeport location. Overall, a so-so IPA and probably not one I would have again. Main problem is lack of hops on the nose. For an IPA on tap, I expected much more. Just an average beer with no special notes worth mentioning.
If you found this review to be lacking but unoffensive, then you know how I felt about this beer.

I tried this as this brew pub is very highly rated on Yelp. I was disappointed with this IPA. It pours a red color and doesn't have particularly distinct smell. There are no distinct hop or citrus smells; it smells like a cheap beer to be honest. Taste is bitter and not characteristic of an IPA. Overall taste and finish is almost watery and flavorless as it finishes. Probably want to skip this one.

Fresh bottle drunk in my hotel room from the store. Likely just their regular IPA but I don't currently know. Grapefruit hop aroma. Decent hop flavour, and then well malted like a red English. Not the best IPA I have had but better balance and drinkability than other hoppy beers I have had here recently. Grapefruit hops and the English style malting make it interesting in any case.

Appearance: Orange with too much head that lingers way too long.

Aroma: Bland...blah

Taste: Very weak. Watery with very little in the taste department to even speak (or write about).

Overall: If this is Maine's "best IPA" as the label claims, then is Maine's worst IPA stale urine?! Simply put, this beer reminds me of Killian's Red...in other words, bland, watery, and forgettable. If you truly want a great IPA, go for Ballast Point Sculpin. NEXT!!

A 6.8% IPA is always a gamble...throwing the dice on a hoppy brew at this abv will give wierd results. As to our buds at Shippy doing the gruntwork, Kudos; this is available at most pharmacy-beer-suppliers for a good price; and for that price we can drink all night and enjoy. Yes Orangy, yes Bubbly and gives a good head...better on tap, but works nevertheless. Not bitter, nor back-bacony, you need this as a daily tap.

a - Pour is somewhat hazy, moderately small head, 1 inch or so.

s - Hops definitely making an appearance, though for some reason they are a little off putting.

t - Some citrus qualities to the beer.

m - pretty evenly bodied, extremely drinkable.

o - Not the greatest IPA, but good for what it is.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a into a pint glass. Picked up straight from Freeport store.

Pours cloudy dark amber with white foam. Some layer remains on top. Orange tint. Light fruity nose, but mild. Subdued for an IPA. Taste is a citrus grapfruit. Good malt blend. Little bite at close. The rind gets mixed into the finish. Last note is citrus. NOT the best IPA in Maine (obviously) but still good.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of October 2013. Sampled on July 22, 2013.

It is a good looking pour with a medium amber tone and a short-lived but delicate off-white head. Some chill haze.

The aroma: Where are the hops? Not getting much there. I do get a significant amount of malty sweetness, yeast, and butter. The typical American IPA would be more hop forward than this I think.

The body is smooth and around medium.

Like the aroma the taste is more malted sweetness and butter than hoppy. There is a quick lingering bitterness but sweetness seems to be the leader all in all. If it were a regular pale ale it wouldn't be bad. But for the lack of hops it is a challenge to classify this as an IPA.

12oz bottle as part of the Christmas mix pack.

Pours a golden color with a tinge of amber, smallish head that doesn't stick around or on the glass.

Smell is heavy on the caramel malt front with an upfront sweetness to the nose, hops are not very strong, slight metallic aroma.

Taste starts out with a mild hop presence, kind of piney but quickly tempered by the sweet malt, carbonation level is medium, very slick feel in the mouth, almost buttery, for as sweet of an IPA this can be it does finish with a drier than expected finish.

"Maine's Best IPA"? Maybe when they first started and competition was pretty absent, now I can think of plenty IPA's from Maine that are better than this best.
