This seasonal favorite is brewed with local honey and all natural huckleberry. It is light and crisp with a sweet huckleberry nose.

Huge and sincere thanks to JohnGalt1 for this wonderfully tasty brew. Note: I live in blueberry country and I don't use the term huckleberries.

It pours a cloudy straw color, topped briefly by an active white head, then a nice skim island and ring which hang for most of the ride.

The smell is blueberries, not syrupy or artificial or overbearing, but like the smell of a bucket full of fresh. There is a tart note which could be yeast, or the tart of the berries, a nice neutral sweet to it, and just a hint of floral and spicy hops, almost like a ghost aroma.

The sip starts with some tart yeast and nice berry, gains momentum as bitter (not quite herbal, not quite citrus pith) joins the party, and the berry sweet of it and tart stay in the sip to a finish that gets drier, and better, as the ale warms. The honey finally shows itself a bit near room temp., and adds just the right undernote to a flavor profile that is simple and delicious, clean and satisfying. Near room temp. is where this one shines.

Mouthfeel is where fruit beers often let down. Many are cloying, artificial, or leave a thick unpleasant resin on the palate. This one is low/med. carb., very light in the mouth due to the honey, natural tasting, and has a clean semi-dry finish that highlights the flavors.

Drinkability is quite good, rated as a beer one could drink all night without palate fatigue.

Impression: Yet another fine beer which requires air travel to revisit.

Can from MarCellars. Opening the can gets you a big sweet whiff of huckleberries. Pours out a murky golden with creamy head. Aroma as mentioned is huckleberries. Taste is, yup...you guessed it... huckleberries. Somewhere underneath is a meaty golden ale, but this is all about the berries. Finishes with a whimper.

This beer I had straight from the can. This is copied from my Untapped review, with edits. I gave this beer a 3.5.

Straight from the can. Strong berry aroma.
Flavor is huckleberry up front with a faint hint of lemon, which provides a bit of sweetness to this beer.
Light body.
Delicious on a hot day (I had this in the mountains when it was 90+ outside)

after being impressed with the only other beer i had from these guys before this one, i was excited to find this one on tap out in eastern idahp. unfortunately, it tastes a bit cheap and extracty to me on the fruit side of things, and doesnt quite have the authenticity or drinkability i was looking for in a beer thats obviously designed to be a summer slinger. there isnt hardly any color from the fruit, a sign real berries might not have been used, we all know how dark purple and staining they are. the honey element is there in nose and taste though, and kind of saves the beer for me. even though i dont want it to be this sweet overall, i love the flavor of the honey, its floral and natural and nice with the very light pale barley malt base this has, simple but pleasing. the fruit has a slight plastic element to it, not what i know the real fruit to taste like, and its highly enough dosed that i cant really overlook it. the beer itself isnt bad, and im sure it has its fans, but i would put this more in the shock top flavored beer category than i would something crafted and genuine, much as it hurts me to say that. this drinks like an attempt at mass appeal, and i just cant really get into it, especially for more than one. i like the idea of this fruit with the honey, but only half of the equation comes through the way it should. maybe too harsh for something thats not bad, but the potential here is just so high that i felt a little disappointed with it.

While in Montana how could I not try a huckleberry beer?

On tap in Troy, Montana.

A: Cloudy honey color with plenty of lace.

S: Roasty, toasty malts. Noticeable huckleberries. Inviting.

T: Surprisingly good. Huckleberry flavor is just right, not too strong or weak, not overpowering. Pleasantly sweet with noticeable hop bitterness, more hoppy than expected. Malts are toasty.

M: Stinging carbonation. A little lighter than expected but the creaminess almost makes up for it.

O: Great! Worth a try, glad I did.

Overall a solid beer. A unique experience, but I feel that the flavors are almost too overpowering and it is a tad too sweet. Still tasted good after a day of hiking

This CAN took the long way around in coming to me. I had scored some desirous CANs of my own recently & when I offered them up for ANY CANs that were new to me, this was offered in return. Apparently, it was an extra in a recent trade on the other party's part & he was willing to part with it. I'll take it!

From the CAN: "The Last Best Brew"; "Est. 1998"; "I'm Your Huckleberry!"; "Limited Release"; "Seasonal Ale"; "Ale brewed with honey, Montana malted barley and natural huckleberry flavor added."; "Fresh Product, Keep Refrigerated".

I have to say, the Huckleberry Honey of the paper label looks really great when transferred onto an aluminum cylinder! Blonde, topless, winking with a huckleberry vine entwined around her bust, she seems to invite us into her playground in shades of purple & green. I just know that the spent CAN will be given a good home at Jeff Lebo's House of CANs!

The Crack! revealed a brimful craft CAN & my mouth began to water in anticipation of sampling this Honey's wares. I was gentle with her on the Glug and she rewarded me with two fingers of fluffy, bone-white head with good retention. Everything was really sticky when she finished, though! Sticky lacing, I mean. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4), befitting a blonde Honey such as herself. Nose was very berry-like, although I would have said blueberries. We do not grow huckleberries here in the northeast so I do not have a solid base of reference. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very sweet, loaded with berries. Again, I do not know what huckleberries taste like, but this was like fruit preserves! She was one sweet Huckleberry Honey! Finish remained sweet, fruity and more suitable for the summer cooler. I am going to blend the second half of the CAN's CANtents with my remaining Rogue Double Chocolate Stout to see what results.
