Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The energy and audacity of the fixed gear courier inspired us to create Fixed Gear, a big, bold American Red IPA. It pours a glaring crimson tone with a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma, thanks to an aggressive Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook dry hopping. Gratuitous amounts of dark caramel malts lend Fixed Gear its immodest, malty spine, while Chinook and Cascade hops impart its balanced citrus bite. This one’s got an attitude!

The hop flavor in Fixed Gear mingles well with Indian spices like tamarind, coriander, and cardamom; try it with tandoori chicken or pork vindaloo with rice on the side. Also goes great with grilled burgers, steaks, or baby back ribs.

Very smooth maltiness and a very nice caramel taste midway and through the finish. A little high in the booze dept so don't drink too many. :-) Also don't think this one too cold, I think. That hampers the caramel taste.

A: The beer is slightly hazy reddish amber in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a half finger high beige head that gradually died down, consistently leaving a thin head covering he surface and lots of lacy rings of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: A rather complex mixture of citrusy and floral hops is present in the nose along with notes of caramel malts and hints of pine resin hops.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, but has a little more balance with the caramel malts and citrusy hops. A light amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and has a nice balance between the citrusy hops and caramel malts.

Bottled 4/2012.

Pours a murky copper with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/11/2013. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep red-orange color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of dark/bready malts and citrus hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, light biscuit, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, grass light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt and citrus/grassy hop flavors; with a good malt/hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and lightly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice amber ale. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and citrus hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Poured from a 355ml bottle. Pours a rusty copper/tawny brown. Barely any tan head. The smell is a sweet mix of brown sugar, grainy malt and a little spice from the hops. The brown sugar/molasses comes through on the palate with some nutty malt (marzipan?) flavours and a solid hop bite at the back end of the finish. Reminded us a bit of Lagunitas Brown Shugga.
