Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The energy and audacity of the fixed gear courier inspired us to create Fixed Gear, a big, bold American Red IPA. It pours a glaring crimson tone with a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma, thanks to an aggressive Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook dry hopping. Gratuitous amounts of dark caramel malts lend Fixed Gear its immodest, malty spine, while Chinook and Cascade hops impart its balanced citrus bite. This one’s got an attitude!

The hop flavor in Fixed Gear mingles well with Indian spices like tamarind, coriander, and cardamom; try it with tandoori chicken or pork vindaloo with rice on the side. Also goes great with grilled burgers, steaks, or baby back ribs.

10/3/18 (Chicago): $4.50 12oz bottle poured into standard pint glass at The Garage Bar & Sandwiches. 6.8% ABV. Copper pour, thin off razor thin head and lacing. Thin citrus aroma. Citrus hops taste, thin watery mouth feel, nominal carbonation. Overall nice beer.

Smells and looks better than it tastes. For a red IPA, should be smoother and less bitter. Its okay although not likely to buy it again,

Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. Best by date on label is '03 NOV 18',
Medium amber, slightly murky, colored body. Two finger light tan head settles to thick cap and ring. Leaves behind sheets and spots of lacing.
Lots of herbal hops in the aroma, along with caramel malts.
Sharp and slightly sweet taste of bitter hops and caramel malts. Quite a tasty balance. The after taste retains the citrus pith bitterness.
Medium, creamy mouth feel. Good carbonation.
Good food choice pairing with spicier meals. On its own the beer has a good combination of the sweet malt and the more bitter hops.

Not an Ale fan, and this is a quality Ale, but a no go for me. “Someone tried really hard to make this taste like this.” If you like hip ales this is for you.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with tall, long lasting, fluffy off-white head. Aroma is of grassy hops, caramel malt and ripe fruit. Body is medium and crisp. Herbal hops dominate the palate with caramel malt and ripe fruit provide support. Finish is long, grapefruity. Good brew.

Pours a crimson tone with a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma. This borders on a red IPA. Aggressive dry hopping and mild bitterness.

I'll start by saying this was in the back of my fridge since last year. "Best Buy" date is 10/16 so this is nearly a year old. I don't know why I put it away, but thought if it's an IPA, it gets better (or worse depending on opinion) with age. Gave it a shot tonight. I also discovered my bottle of Anger Management from Brew Keeper, it's over 8 years old. (Double IPA. Hmmm.)

This poured a dark brown and it varied in color lighter to darker like a black and tan? Checked it under light and indeed that was it. Fizzy throughout but little head and lace in the pour. Slight fruit scent with a touch of raisin ad maybe a bit of tar from the hops. Mouth was not bitter , went over without any fanfare but did foam up when let alone.

I think I put this one away because I didn't like it that much when I had it new. That's why the exclaimer at the beginning. If this mellowed the harsh, well age may be this beer's friend. Smooth, fruity, with a Jujy fruit back. Hints of the red/bitter come out. A touch sweet.

Well. I could drink THIS beer all night. It's very complex. I might have to get more and try it new to see if indeed there was a gap with age.

P.S. I've now rated 500 beers? Wondering when I get a FEZ? (Hello old school BA users. :)

Deep rich burgundy in color and topped with a pristine tan froth. It's a looker.

Aroma is malt forward with tea leaf and overripe plum following.

Tastes of tea leaf, spice and fruit juice with a tame and simple bitterness throughout the finish.

It's light from start to finish and drops a touch of alcohol heat off on the way down.

First I've had from this bunch, and not bad at all. Kind of enjoying the lack of pretension here.
