Average looking macro lager. Wait, this is a pale ale? Much too light in body, this could easily pass for bud light. Smells like a macro lager, too. What gives? Just some grainy malts, no hops. Taste is also macro lagerish. This couldn't be farther from a good American Pale Ale. Reminiscent of the disaster that was Anchor Small Beer. Very watery, the graininess is annoying. What was Lakefront thinking? Versus the style, pretty much worthless.

Here kitty kitty. Pours a golden yellow color with a noticeable hazy. The head retention is pour is the lacing. Best described as here and gone. Interesting to note the foam on the head seemed to have larger then normal bubbles of a beer.

The smell is not really noticeable. Some basic malt but really nothing there.

The taste is rather limited and somewhat watered down. The malt is basic with some limited biscuit flavor. Some lighter hop flavors with some citrus flavor but nothing really noticeable. It has a slight buttery flavor at the end with subdues the body and leave the aftertaste a little stale.

The body is light and I would prefer to see more taste.

Hmmm... could have sworn the bottle said Cattail Ale, but what's in my glass looks like Michelob instead. White fizzy head that last about 14.8 seconds. Dark yellow color - exactly the color of urine. Hoping this beer isn't someone's idea of a practical joke...

Smell was okay; reminded me of mead in a strange way. No hops present at all... well, alright; I'll keep an open mind. Upon the first taste, and the second and third, the only thing that kept coming to my mind was "chardonnay... it's a carbonated chardonnay with no character." Got pretty sour by the fourth and fifth sips, and after the sixth it went down the sink. Not going to waste my alcohol intake on something this bad.

I concur that this just doesn't taste fresh. I likened it to a stale skunked American B/M/C brew. Ale, my heine.

Poured into a pint glass. Little white 1/4" inch head quickly disappeared. No amount of swirling could bring it back. No apparent carbonation, but it made me belch like I was drinkin' Diet Coke (yuk). Smells grainy and a bit lemony... SOUR lemony... and tastes the same. It has that nasty cheap swill taste.

Thankfully the sampler pack had only one.

Dec week 1 notch tried in Jan '05.

Slightly hazy light peach hues with a few scant tiny bubble trains escaping to the eggshell white surface of instantly dissipating head cap.

Non existant aroma. Nada!

First swigs: Stale flat orange soda. Lack of flavor notes that are only preferable to macro swill.

Last swigs: Lacklustre lemon soda. I would try again to see if I am mistaken. Otherwise, $2,50 wasted.

Lakefront Cattail Ale is a clear golden beer with no head. It smells a little funky with a faint note of lemon. It is soft and medium-light bodied with a clean finish. It tastes a little skunky and grassy. It's very mild, but I can taste a little alcohol in it. I just wanted to taste a Mild Ale in a bottle.

I have a conspiracy theory. It starts with Old Milwaukee having a fire sale and selling the vast majority of their overstock to Lakefront Brewers. In turn Lakefront puts pleasant little labels on these ordinary brews and calls them craft beers. There is no added value whatsoever in having a craft beer that tastes just like the common rung corporate swill.

Bottle dated March no year given.

A: Cloudy light gold color, very small head that quickly dissipates.

S: Smell is a little funcky, definitely some citrus, grass, and sweetness all merging together, it is not to my fancy.

T: The taste like the smell is messy, it has malt sweetness and some bitterness in the finish but they are all jumbled up, Mouthfeel is light.

I did not enjoy this beer, but I think that given the location I bought it from and the date on the label this beer was probably past its prime.

Originally reviewed June 7 2007. 12 Oz Bottle. Aroma is a weak sickly malt, a touch rubbery. Pours deep gold, with rim of off-white sparse head. Flavor is a plain, very bland middle sugar with a nip of corn and bread. Smacks out in some sort of lemon confusion. A pale Mild? Not interesting. I wish the Kent Goldings showed more and that it wasn’t so bland. Unoffensive. It tastes as you think it would, after looking at the label. Really pretty awful as a Mild Ale.

Poured into a pint glass from longneck bottle

A- Light orange in color, very see through. Nice two inch head that left a nice lacing on the side.

B- Smelled like a lager, could be PBR or Bud based on smell. Mostly malts.

T- I know this is supposed to be an ale, not a lager but to me it taste much like a regular macro-brew. It largely is malty, with some grains, it does have some mild hop bitterness at the end which helps the taste some.

M- Pretty light and carbonated.

D- I wouldn't go out of my way for this, its not all that interesting. It would do well with the fans of the mainstream beers, would be a good choice for grilling out on a hot day. I never had an English Pale Mild Ale before, but like I said it seems like a lager.

a - poured a three-fingers thick off-white and bubbly head into my sam adams glass that left thick lace and sheeting. the body was straw gold and dull.
s - grainy, bready and grassy. kind of muted and just no pop.
t - lemony and bitter. just doesn't taste fresh.
m - bubbly and becomes slick towards the finish.
d - nondescript beer, i don't know what else to say.

A=golden amber that's a little hazy, one finger head, decent head retention, no lacing
S= citrus hops, corn , and a wheat or rice something
T= great deal of spicy bitter hops at the end, in the middle its very citrus, for some reason I'm getting lemons or something really sour? There's sort of a corn taste up front
M=medium body and average carbonation
D= decent but the weird taste will turn me off after about two. I would prolly get bored with this and need to find something tastier.

Pours a pale golden color with a thin white head. Poor retention and no lacing.

Aroma is ok. A bit of citrus and pale malts. Not a whole lot going on.

The taste is ok. A big citrus note followed by a bit of pale malt. Really not too impressive.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly carbonated.

Drinkability is moderate. Definitely sessionable, but just not that good.

Another beer, paradise, hopefully this will never end. This one comes out the bottle in the all to familiar golden yellow that is seen with most Ales, head goes from there to gone in no time flat, with no misting nor edge-head lacing. Extremely carbonated (hmm.. no head??) smells somewhat fruity and oaty, would compare to a breakfast cereal with a caramel backdrop. First sip comes as fruity but only makes it half way down the tongue before the flavor dissolves, not much by way of mouthfeel, we will call in tip of tongue feel, flavor is smooth, not bitter, lightly buttered malts might be.. there is always the next bottle.

It pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with minimal head retention.

Oranges and dark fruits maintain the majority of the aroma profile.

Theres something funny in the taste. Somewhat hoppy and fruity, but also high astringency and a strange tweed of unidentified taste.

Mouthfeel is crisp and clean and the drinkability is average. Not a bad beer, just not convinced there isnt something strange with this particular batch, or maybe the beer altogether.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a clean pint glass.

Poured a light golden color with very little head that quickly disappeared into nothing. Moderate active carbination quickly rises to the top but fails to form into any head.

I really can't smell anything from it, just a tease of malt.

Much like how it smells it has very little to give to taste except a tease of malt flavor. It is very smooth and rolls across the palate extremely easy.

Very neutral over all. This beer is drinkable, a good choice for people who are not accustomed to drinking beer with vivid scent and flavor.

Not really a very strong offering. I got as part of an assorted eight pack. It had a gold color, slightly see through, limited head. It also had a sour smell.

I guess that it is crisp, but it had very little flavor to it. I didn't get the ale taste, really, it tastes more like an American lager. Decent American lager, but there are better ales out there.

This beer poured a mostly clear pale golden color. with a small white head that fizzles out pretty quick.

The aroma, well there isn't one. I can barely pick up on pilsner malt.

The flavor is like pilsner malt with a touch of sourness with some floral hop flavor.

The mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation.

This is a pretty average beer. I doesn't seem like a pale ale to me at all. It's more like a pilsner.

Clear pale yellow - looks like ginger ale, with a fluffy white head that quickly disappears to nothing

Aroma : Slight floral scent followed by white bread malt

Taste: Predominately bready maltiness with a pronounced floral taste. No hint of hops or roasted malt.

Very little carbonation with a Thin watery mouthfeel

Goes down easy. would drink again if it were one of the few options available won't be going out of my way for this one

12 ounce bottle. Pours out a pale yellow color with a fizzy white head. Bready, slightly sour aroma. Some lemon and grass in the aroma too. Thin malt sweetness, followed by an acidic tartness that is unpleasant. Finishes with some grainy husk. High carbonation. Mouthfeel is thin. This is a pale ale gone totally wrong. I can't imagine who drinks this stuff.

A filtered clear staw color. Low malt aroma, with only a slightly corny malt flavor (flaked corn?). Finished clean with a low hop bite. Just not really my cup of tea but perhaps good for a cross over ale.

I would have to agree with the previous review, this beer is much more of a Golden Ale than an APA. Taken as such, it fits the bill, but is still kind of an average beer.

I really wish the taste lived up to the aroma. But it doesn't.

Pours a slightly hazy golden with a thin head that collapses to nothing instantly. The aroma, however, is really good, noticeable from several feet away as I opened and pours - grainy, sharp, slightly acidic and refreshing, like a good lager, with a bit of overripe floral hop. I actually held off taking a sip just to breath in the aroma for a moment longer. But the flavor? Not so great. Ok, but nothing like the aroma. It is a bit sour, grainy, with a flavor a bit like rice - it has a strange saki-like tone to it. Not unpleasant, but not a beer that will bring me back. The mouthfeel is insubstantial and the hop bitterness is slight on the finish.

Ack. Bottled in April. This one needs to be fresh. No idea what it would be like if it was. This one is off. Chunks of yeast. Hops are faded. It just tastes stale.

It appears that all of the Lakefront beers that recently hit Birmingham are way out of date. C'mon people. Step it up or your beer won't be getting purchased by anyone 6 months from now.

This beer didn't do much for me...struck as a rather malty amber ale with not much fruitiness. It was sort of a "tweener;" there are beers that are maltier and beers that are hoppier. This beer didn't scratch either of my usual beer itches.

Appearance was a rather dark amber. Aroma was of slight fruitiness (but that is me reaching - it was very slight). Flavor was very malty with no hop taste.

On-tap at the brewery.
