Vanilla Maple Doppelbock

Malty and full-bodied, sweet biscuit, maple, and mild vanilla aromas emanate from the glass. Roasty malt and maple syrup flavors arrive first, with vanilla and mild lager yeast ester fruitiness eventually making a showing.

Appearance - The was a brownish amber color with a modest mocha head.

Smell - Maple is very detectable in the aroma, but the malts are also very present.

Taste - Maple and vanilla make an impression in the initial taste. The vanilla makes this one seem quite smooth. The sweetness of the vanilla fades in the aftertaste creating a dry vanilla impression.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, chewy, and malty are the best words to describe the mouthfeel .

Overall - I liked this one way more than I would have expected. The vanilla and maple impressions really add to this doppelbock.b

A- Pours a deep amber to medium brown in color with a hazy body. Fairly large head forms and retains very well. acing is also pretty good.

S- First thing that hits the nose is sweet maple flavor. Some dark fruit flavors typical of a doppelbock follow the maple flavor. Underneath all of the scents the vanilla makes its presence fairly well known.

T- Starts off with a lot of darker malt flavors combined with maple and vanilla sweetness. Dark fruit flavors are strong in the malt and mix interestingly with the sweet maple and vanilla. Towards the middle of the drink, the malts take over more from the sweet flavors and a more traditional doppelbock flavor overall is found. A slight bit of malty and hoppy bitterness is found at the end of the drink, and the dark fruits and bitterness are the lingering flavors.

M- Fairly thick and creamy feeling with a definite alcohol presence. Carbonation is right in line with the style, being low to medium. A smooth drink that is somewhat slowed by the heavy malt bill and alcohol level.

Overall, a very interesting version of a doppelbock. Sweetness provides a nice balance to a normally very malty style. Maple and vanilla not as prominent as expected, but could be due to age. Still, this beer is worth trying if you like new takes on traditional (German) styles.

1 PT. 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a pilsner glass

A - It's not quite copper in color. It is a dark burnt orange. I got about an inch of beige head.

S - The maple is apparent. There is a lot of sweet toffee and caramel malt. I really don't notice any vanilla.

T - It is sweet but not overtly so. The maple and caramel malt blend well. I get some subtle vanilla on the finish.

M - Medium and a little syrupy.

O - It is not my favorite doppelbock, but it is an interesting beer. I like it. The sweetness is balanced out by just enough hops. I would have it again.
