Poured on tap at the brew pub. Looks, smelled and tasted fresh...turned out it was only tapped 5 days earlier. Excellent!

Appearance: Pours a very appealing deep straw color with a strong standing white head. Great lacing remain on the edge of the glass.

Smell: Bright notes of pine and some zesty citrus. A nice biscuit like crispness supports these in-your-face aromas.

Taste: More of the same. A real great crisp biscuitness lies low as pine and citrus pop up and down. Awesome flavors, all working together very well.

Mouth: A great, dry mouthfeel. It's so crisp and bright, it leaves you wanting more.

Drink and overall: Another great beer fro Bob. This one shone brightly and was super fresh. I haven't even been in the IPA state of mind recently, but this hit the spot.

Quick notes from the library in Houghton MI.

Semi clear light orange colored beer. Fluffy white head that has great lacing

Smell is very sweet. Slight Grapefruit citrus.

Taste: Sweet grassy piney. Pretty hop centered like a lot of
Midwest IPA’s. Boozy and bitter at the end on the dry side also

Mouthfeel: medium with sharp carbonation

Pretty good, I hope I get a chance to try some of their others in the future.

Poured coppery amber average lacing

Mostly malty slight hoppy citrus but not a lot though.

Mostly malt caramel sweetness up front with a slight citrus finish. I don't really consider this an American IPA more of a pale ale or perhaps an English IPA.

This beer is average all around the drink ability is perhaps better then average when price at the bar is considered....All said having read the other reviews I may have had an off keg or it was a miss pour but being that I got the beer on site in houghton and I now live in Maine ill review it as is

Bought the growler yesterday evening, but just opened it this afternoon.

A - Pours a clear, coppery amber with a cap that drops to a film and a ring of foam. Average lacing.

S - Sweet caramel malt, grapefruit, pine, floral hops

T - There is a rich, caramel sweetness up front that practically makes it an Imperial IPA. Nuttiness, grapefruit juiciness (which puckers slightly), pine sap notes, a touch grassy, just a kiss of alcoholic astringency, and a bitter, hoppy finish on the swallow that lingers on the tongue.

M - Medium-bodied, but luxurious. Balanced CO2, slightly prickly. Basically perfect for either the IPA or IIPA style. Alcoholic enough for a warming effect on the mouth and back of the throat, I'd guess it's somewhere in the 8-9% range.

D - Balanced and delicious. In spite of the alcohol content, it's absolutely a slow, steady session brew for me.

Keeping the American IPA style in mind, this really is too rich, but if you consider it as the IIPA it ought to be, it is a solid example of that. A brew perhaps mislabeled by the brewers, but an enjoyable beer nonetheless. Worthy of the silver medal it won a few years ago at a state beer competition.

friend brought a growler down and shared, thank you derek, glad to see the move to the UP has worked out.

poured a deep copper color with a thin head that dropped in to a few bubbles.
the aroma is malty with hint of biscuits and citrus a long with a good dose of hops.
the flavor is nice and balanced not to malty but there is a firm backbone of malt, caramelized malt, not to thick, easy drinking, the hops are good and make there presence known. pungent, citrus, firm bitterness, hint of grassiness.
over all a great beer, wish i had more to drink.

Originally reviewed March 23, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Rich clear honey color, with frothy diminished head. Light fruit aroma. Hops are strong on the finish, but not so much on the foreground, which I really appreciate. Great caramel and nutty flavors bounce on the tounge right off the bat. Very complex, with alcohol in the nose. Finish is totally velvet. This is a quite solid IPA, with all the desirable characters. Excellent body. Sometimes the hops can get a little terse and metallic on the backend, but the upfront profile is astounding.

My roommate Nick brought back three growlers of Library brew back to Madison from the UP after his band (The Box Social, check them out http://www.theboxsocial.net ) played a few shows up in Marquette and Houghton.

Pours a reddish amber color with a finger of off-white head. Nose is suprisingly sweet and malty - caramel, earthy vanilla, and fruit. Taste starts off with a mild floral hop bite, but as it warms gets quite malty and sweet, remeniscent of a scotch ale, with woody barrel-aged/vanilla notes and some light, creamy cherry. Mouthfeel is medium, CO2 is perfect. This is a surprisingly good beer from Podunk UP, Michigan. Has a lot of scotch ale qualities and not particularly hoppy, but whatever it is, this is a really good beer. Nick needs to play up there more often.

Listen to The Box Social, they're really good, go to theboxsocial.net. go go go.

also, go to the UP and try this beer.

Just recently cahnged to "Miner's IPA" from "Guru IPA" this beer had won a Silver or Bronze medal at the 2005 Michigan Brewing Cup, can't remember which now.

The beer is copper brown with a thin creamy head. I must have gotten the last glass from a keg as there was visible sediment, and when I went to order a growler the bartender told me it would take a minute becuase the beer was "pouring like ass" with lots of head, and there was no sediment in my growler.

Not much nose on this beer.

Strong sweet malt hits you at first with very prevelant alcohol, 7-8% according to the bartender, but it liked to sap you in the face. Hops bitterness takes over where the alcohol leaves off and I can't tell for sure if it is the bitterness or alcoghol (or both) that sticks around in my mouth forr the next minute or so.

Pleasantly medium bodies with adequate carbonation.

This beer is powerful in all the ways an IPA should be, but is too much for me and almost falls more into the IIPA section of my book. Can't have many of these.

This was a pretty good IPA. It poured a nice copper color with not much of a head. The smell was floral and hoppy but not as strong as I prefer my IPA's to be. The taste was nice and balanced all the way through. Hoppy with bit of sweetness. The mouthfeel was good with its medium carbonation. I thought it was a very drinkable and good tasting beer but it didn't knock my socks clear off.

This was an excellent find in an area where it's hard to find good beer. I was happy to see an IPA among their offerings. It was a nice amber color with a very small head (probably due to a very conservative pour). It left a nice sticky lacing on the glass. There was an awesone floral, hoppy, fruity smell and taste. It is bitter but well balanced. The mouthfeel was great. Definitely the best beer I had all week. Maybe I am overcompensating due to the lack of beer available at the time, but I don't think so.
