Pacifico Clara is a better than average everyday beer with a nice copper color and a refreshing, thirst-quenching quality. Understanding this beer is not intended to be a craft beer or high gravity, it beats most US mass-produced beers hands down for taste and quality. Mouth feel is nice though slightly watery which is outstanding on a hot afternoon. Once on an early June day hike in the Arizona mountains I stuck a few bottles in a melting snow bank at the trail head before taking off. On my weary return I cracked open bottle after bottle of PC and was warmly welcomed by an ice cold Mexican kiss. Looking for a decent but low key beer to enjoy with friends by the grill? Pacifico Clara will fill the bill nicely.

Drank from a 12 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Downtown Wine & Spirits, Somerville, MA
Served in a pint glass

The beer poured a very pale and clear, golden yellow color. A one-finger tall, foamy, bone white head topped the liquid but it quickly dissipated. No lacing.

The nose was sweet and grainy initially. Hints of bubblegum were noticeable. As the beer sat, the sweetness dissipated and the graininess intensified. Husky. Mild pale malt notes. Not terrific but not offensive either.

The flavor profile was quite a surprise. Things started out okay on the front end with pale malt and adjunct notes dominating. Slightly wheaty, tart and lemony in the center. The finish however was abysmal. The beer was so intensely dry and bitter that I could hardly swallow what was in my mouth. Take the most brutally bitter double IPA, remove all the actual flavor, and what you have left is what comes through in the finish of this beer. Calling this "astringent" would definitely be an understatement.

The mouthfeel was respectable. Light, frothy and slightly creamy on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence.

Of all the macro lagers that I have drunk lately, Pacifico was definitely the most offensive. I cannot image why this beer was so terrible on the finish, but I will definitely avoid it at all costs in the future.

Mexican lagers are historically based on Pilsners from Germany and Vienna, and have since gained their own unique character. Light in body and color with a mild flavor, Pacifico is very appropriate for the style, if not at all impressive for it. Featuring a slight bitterness at the end, this is a very good beer for pairing with southwestern and Latin based dishes, but is not very enjoyable on its own. There is a blandness and a softness to it that adventerous beer lovers may be left unimpressed by. As a ubiquitous and commercialized beer meant for consumption by the general public, it does exactly what it's supposed to do and nothing more. Much more palatable than Corona.
