Negra Modelo, better known as "the cream of the beer", is a Munich-type beer with 5.3º of alcohol that offers a balanced flavor and a delicate aroma of dark malt, caramel and hops.
Today it occupies the first place in sales among dark beers in Mexico. This beer is accompanied by a bright deep amber color, which is adorned with abundant, white and compact foam.
Negra Modelo was introduced in Mexico in 1925 as the dark beer called Modelo, to begin its great tradition. In 2014 it changed its image to a more sophisticated bottle but with the same content.
Ingredients - Water, barley malt, non-malted cereals, hops

A 500 mL glass at a pizzeria in Puerto Vallarta.
A: The lagerbier is an amber color that floats ephemerally between a copper penny and chocolate brown. The lager is rendered opaque as a result of the hues. A small head, surprisingly nonexistent, didn't do much through the glass.
S: The nose lacks some of the chocolate strength that the bottled version has. What remains is a mild grainy aroma that has a noticeable, but not overpowering, roasted aroma.
T: Roasted grains, chocolate and burnt toast define the flavor. The malty base is firm, mildly carbonated, with a strong bready finish. Par for the course, hops really don't add much of a zing, allowing the dark malts to carry the day. By far the most diverse Mexican lager around.
M: The lower carbonation in the draught version allows the roasted flavors to come through with a little more oomph.
D: Very drinkable, possibly my favorite of the trip.

Off to Mexico to try one I've never had before...Negra Modelo. Have had plenty of XX Amber, but never tried this one before. Had this in a Mexican Restaurant, served with an icy-chilled mug. Expiration date on the bottle said June 2024. Not sure if this was bottled 2 months ago or back in June of 2023. Hopefully 2 months ago. Did a moderately aggressive pour and achieved a 1-finger light tan foamy head that dissipated quickly...thanks to the frozen mug I'm sure. Medium to deep amber in color. Light carbonation. On the nose I get light caramel, bread notes like a ciabatta crust, medium richness, light hops, hints of malty sweetness. Everything light, not very intense. Seems balanced nonetheless. So, how does it taste? OK, first impression - this is good, not great. Mouthfeel is nothing to write home about. There is a moderate richness there, led by the breadiness with some of that caramel. Midway I pick up some moderate bitter hop presence which continues on the backend which cuts out any sweetness. I also pick up some of that bread crust on the finish. This one is very drinkable. It is nothing special though, but I would order it again if I'm in the mood. It is definitely worth a try if you're out for a darker brew with light to mild flavors. To me, for a darker brew, it was surprisingly light on aroma and flavor.

Drank 1/10/24. Best by: May 2024. For whatever that's worth....that best by dates.
Pour is a deep amber. finger of off white head that fades to a thin cap on the beer. No lacing to speak of.
Nose is chocolatey, nutty. could be a little more forward
Taste follows. hints of chocolate, caramel, nutty, minimal hop character.
Not bad at all.

Pours a medium brown with minimal head and lacing. The aroma is pretty muted, a little toasted malt with a shallow creek water type of thing going on there. The taste is not offensive but not terribly complex: toasted malts, a little nutty, sort of thin and watery, largely devoid of hop. This is very "meh' for me but would gladly drink it over other options south of the border.

From the bottle, it pours a clear chestnut amber color with a modest light tan/off-white head that slowly reduces and leaves lacing. Scent is light malt and pleasant. Taste is caramel and burnt malt up front, with a bit of sweet malt after.

Such a nice beer! Beats out all other “dark” options you can find at the grocery store. Haven’t had anyone complain about drinking this with me yet! Always keep some around.

Straight 3/5 across the board. I would definitely buy it again, but it's nothing special or impressive. Decent overall beer.
