In 1997 I got on a plane bound for Mexico City. I had been trying to learn Spanish and had been corresponding with a young lady for a few months. She met me at the airport with her boyfriend. They drove me past the Zocalo and to my hotel. I checked in, and when I came down, they were in the restaurant drinking Negra Modelos. I had a great week. I had a personal tour guide showing me the museums and landmarks of a beautiful city and access to Negra Modelo wherever I went. I'm still friends with the girl. We communicate via Facebook these days. So this beer brings back fond memories to me.

As the name suggests, it's a dark beer. It's not heavy, and it doesn't have an overpowering taste, perfect for cooling down after climbing Teotihuacan or taking in the sights on a hot August Mexico City afternoon.

Didn't get a good look at the appearance - sorry, I drank it straight from the bottle.

Hearty smell, no hint of formaldehyde.

Tastes good. A little thinner than you hope. Mouthfeel enhanced by effervescent carbonation.

I could drink these 'til I drop.

A: Pours a dark cranberry red with a huge frothy off white, light tan head.

S: Some sweet Vienna malt makes a presence on the nose, along with some brown sugar notes as well.

T: The malting is very warm and dark roasted with some dried apples, pears and cider juice flavors coming through. There is some burnt woodiness, warm bread and smoky notes for flavor along with some dried fruit (raisin grist) and some dark licorice. There is also some nice dark roasted coffee notes, caramel and a very rich dark roasted nuttiness along with a nice earthy hop bitterness and a grainy dry malt bitterness for a finish and fade with a touch of smokiness to round it out.

M: A very nice grainy feel on the tongue.

D: Overall a very drinkable beer, very rich and big per style drinking like a octoberfest bock.

My wife brought this home because she tried it and loved it when it was available at a work related event. I have been buying it constantly now.

A: Dark redish brown without much head. Good clarity.

S: sweet caramel aroma also with a suttle citrusy smell.

T: Sweet at first with a slightly hoppy bitter aftertaste. It is very well balanced.

MF: light (to medium) bodied with the perfect amount of carbonation

D: Very yummy beer that goes down almost too easily. I had several in a row when eating some Spanish tapas.

I was never into Mexican beer but Negra Modelo and Bohemia have impressed me a lot and I have been a regular customer as of late.

i try this beer in the party of my birthday, is very good when is frozen in ice bar, only not have the same properties of the presentation on bottle, but its fight to gain my admiration, like a beer on tap, its brewery put much attention in its delivery, carefully installed its system of tap.

12oz brown bottle. Brown translucent body with just a film of off-white head. Smells like fruit, alcohol, roasted and caramel malt. Tastes sweeter than expected, with apple or pear, roasted and caramel malt, and hints of chocolate even? No real bitterness to speak of, though there's some hop there, but just enough to offset the maltiness and sweetness of the brew. Taste is surprisingly pleasing and complex, with many different components ballancing the others. Lighter-bodied, making for a rather drinkable beer. Surprisingly good - helps redeem my opinion of Mexican beers.

Ap. Pours a nice caramel color, but no head or lacing at all.
Sm. Not a strong smell, sweetness and caramel.
Ta. Some chocolate, caramel. A nice sweetness with a smooth finish.
Mf. Light carbonation, pleasant.
Dr. Yes indeedy. It goes down very easy and tastes great on the way. I first encountered Negra Modelo in Berrego Springs, CA and fell in love with it.

A- Pours a 1 finger head, one shade above white. The head lakes great retention but does stay around for a minute or two. The body is crystal clear amber brown.

S- Quite a bit of caramel, nuttiness, honey graham crackers, maple nut. Not bad at all.

T- Starts out with a bit of raisin, some brown sugar, a hint of chocolate while transitioning, I get a note of maplenut before the dominantly going to a dry light hop note. Again, not bad at all.

M- Medium carbonation is a perhaps a bit cloying but the finish is relatively clean.

D- Quite a drinkable mexican beer. This is definitely going to be my mexican restaurant go-to.

A - Pours up an dark amber with ruby highlights. I poured down the side of the glass and did not get a head. I really like the way this looks.

S - a very light caramel aroma, but no hops detected.

T - Very subtle malt flavor accented by hops at the back end.

M - Lager like mouthfeel, not thick, not too thin.

D - Very smooth and clean tasting beer that despite it's stronger alcohol content than American beer is extremely drinkable.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue V:

Don't even think about it, get that damn lime away from this beer and pour it into a glass. Just because this beer comes from Mexico does not mean it needs a wedge of citrus to make it taste better.

A wholesome-looking two fingers of head stand at attention for the duration. Deep tawny color is clear and shows off the darkness it possesses. Hints of lemon, toasted bread crust and brown bread in the aroma. Extreme smoothness gently rolls the medium body over the palate. Sweetness from the malt is predominate to start, but slowly drops off as a toasted graininess takes over. Mild hop bitterness has a slight sharpness to it with very little flavor, just bitterness, which is fine as it lets the malt prevail. Semisweet finish with a lingering cloaked caramel maltiness.

Delicious in a simple way. Remember, just say no to limes! Hands down one of the best Mexican beers that has ever crossed the border, legally.

Caramel aromas, brilliantly clear amber, not a lot of esters, a little malt, astringency, a touch malt, no roast malt flavors, dry finish, medium light body, moderate carbonation.

A very pleasant dark/amber. Good alone or to take the sizzle out of a spicy Mexican meal. Smooth and easy to drink. (Hard to believe this is the same brewery that makes Corona).

pours a deep mohogany with a good head the drops into nothing.
the aroma is malt with a nice hint of hops.
the flavor is malty, hopsack, carmelized malt, bitterness, smooth.
negra modelo is great, nice way to celebrate cinco de mayo, great beer from mexico. this brewery also makes a great bohemian pilsner.

I have had this a few times, but it particularly stood out recently. Looks brown with mohogony and golded high lights. Pours a rich, loose head that is just off white. Smells toasty, malty, and a little like butter popcorn. Tastes malty clean, hopped only for balance in flavor and bittering. A little bready, buttery, toffee like. Creamy body that remains quite soft. Finishes sweet and clean.

Poured from a bottle at a Mexican restaurant. Came with a slice of lime but I wanted nothing to do with that and squeezed it in my glass of water instead. Has a brownish, woody, caramel color. Smells sweet, caramelly and lagery. Tastes sweet and malty, with a bit of bitterness to even it out. Feels fairly light and refreshing, perfect to compliment spicy Mexican cuisine. Overall this is my favorite Mexican beer I've had so far. If I'm at a Mexican restaurant and any friends plan on ordering a Corona or something, I'll recommend they give this a try instead.

A great Mexican-made Vienna lager. This particular beer has a medium brown color, a good deal darker than most Vienna lagers. It has a good malt aroma with a dry malt flavor and aftertaste. A good effort by grupo modelo.

Disclaimer: I'm drinking this in Mexico so maybe that makes a difference? Roasty character with a good body. Goes well with most foods. A great alternative to all the "clear beers." For the price, not sure how you can ask more from a beer out of Mexico but beer snobs will be beer snobs and people on this site still don't rate to style, comparing everything to the best "big beers" they've had.

Look: Pours a transparent lightly toasted brown color with a one and a half finger, khaki head.

Aroma: Raisins, apples and notes of caramel.

Taste: Light and clean. The beer has a very gentle flavor. Vague notes of toasted bread, toffee and apple tarts. Sweetness is balanced out by a moderate bitter hop and dark chocolate flavor on the finish.

Feel: Smooth. Watery. Low carbonation. Light-medium body.

Overall Comments: Not a fussy beer, and that's what I like about it. The flavor is light, toasty, chocolaty, fruity and a little watery but I think those qualities add to the beer's drinkability. Almost dopplebock like. Nothing superb, just a crisp dark beer that sacrifices some of it's flavor and body for sessionability. Would pair nicely with takeout or fast/comfort food in general.

First time drinking this beer. It's Cinco de Mayo so it felt right. Overall a nice, refreshing beer. Not heavy at all. Smooth and light, with a hint of a hoppy aftertaste. There is an aftertaste that hangs around afterwards. Nothing that won't stop me from getting this again.

A: Poured a medium copper-brown color, clear, easy to see through but still looks good. Average head, maybe an inch, stayed for a decent amount of time but not much lacing.

S: Malty and grainy to me but I am not that good with the nose.

T: A little malty and pretty sweet. Slightly bitter aftertaste but it is very well done. Maybe a hint of chocolate? Not sure.

M: Medium level of carbonation. Not very heavy even though it is dark. Refined well.

D: Goes down smooth but somehow is filling even though it does not feel that heavy.

12 Fl oz Bottle from 6 pack - $8.95

This is one of the best Mexican origin beer's I have in my local area - victoria's isn't too far behind.

Upfront this beer pours a dark rich amber with 1 inch head and retainable lacing throughout the drink. Smells mainly of its complex malt and has a bit of sweet notes. First taste there is a bit of alcohol, rich malt, slightly crisp hops on the back end, followed by a retainable sweetness and hop aftertaste. Light carbonation, but could be 'heavy' to the non craft drinker - a great transitional beer if you're starting to try craft styles.

A very nice lager.
It's like a dark lookin pilsner almost... just a bit more hops would make this really special; the use of hops here is still very good as it is.
A slightly sweet smell going on... much drier than you think it would be judging by appearance and smell.
Easy drinkin, pretty tasty, a hint of depth.
A slight bit of oak dryness.
Way better than Corona, that's for sure.
Not as complex as Sam Adams lager but more approachable and more drinkable in my book.

Smells of carmel and malt, nice and dark. Malt and carmel dominate the taste as well. Mouthfeel is very smooth. Overall, quite drinkable. Nothing too complex, but a very pleasant flavor. And widely distributed too, this beer has often saved me from drinking a macro.

Had this brew at a well known mexican restaurant in Queens. Dark brown body with a thin head that didnt last very long. Smell was mildly hoppy with a light herbal aroma. I was surprised by the taste. I was expecting a lot less from a Mexican import. It was very malty and roasty. Light and easy drinking. I enjoyed this beer a lot and would have definately had another if I stayed at the restaurant a little longer.

This is one that I reach for quite frequently when out at one of Salem's countless Mexican cousine restaurants. For Cinco De Mayo, I took two people from my staff across the parking lot to La Guadlajara. I made sure I told the bartender that I didn't want any lime and to bring an unfrosted glass.

The beer poured the color of the bottle with a thin and fizzy head. The beer's smelled of a clear and clean, not overly sweet maltiness. The flavors were the ones I've come accustomed to over time, after our simple, but secret love affair began and started to blossom: the carbonation plays across the tongue as a jab of hops and then a smooth malt finish.

This one might never really receive the credit its due, nor might the Munich Dunkel style, but I'll continue to reach for this one time and time again in the right situations. This is also one of my regular beers when the lady and I visit Siesta Key in Florida.
