Pours a clear, reddish brown with about a finger of white head that sticks around a while. Smells of brown sugar, grass, and earth. Taste is good, balanced. Sweet brown sugar, nuts, herbal, and grass. Clean finish. Pleasant beer

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 12/17/2016. Pours crystal clear reddish copper/brown color with a 1 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, spicy hop; and slight roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes presence. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy/creamy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.4%. Overall this is a great Vienna lager. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Great rich Vienna/Munich malt flavors, with balancing noble hops. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Served in a bottle at the local Mexican place, alongside some botanas. It's been way too long since I'd cracked one of these open, and I'd forgotten how good it is. Seriously, this toasty, semi-sweet, and clean lager can go toe-to-toe with many micro Vienna lagers. Every sip brought a wonderfully sweet (a noce balance of toffee and caramel, with bready notes that keep it from being too sweet) and roasted malt flavor to wash over the the tongue. I may have found my go-to cheap beer.

Poured a dark amber into a pint glass. One finger head disappeared quickly. Toasty flavor but not "burnt" like some darks. Feel is ok....wish it were a little smoother on the back end. This is wonderful beer that deserves your attention. Definitely six-pack worthy.

Bottle C187A079. Sam Adams glass.

A: pours a dark amber brown with one finger light tan head that fades quickly. Loads of streaming carbonation, but actually less than I would expect for the style. No lacing, modest retention.

S: sweet, but not excessively so. Something sweet and fruity; overripe banana? Toasted sweet wheat bread.

T: malty and banana arrival, slightly sweet. The lightness of the sweetness and the complexity of this malty and estery taste are really satisfying. There is something slightly odd at the end, but I think that is the hops given that I just had a Lambic as my last beer. Very clean finish.

M: lighter end of medium. For the style, the carbonation is actually quite restrained. There is a little lingering slickness, but overall it is a lager, so very clean. Not as clean as hustle. Cleaner than Eliot.

O: this is not a good beer, it is a great beer. It captures the essence of the style better than any other beer I have had. Mexican lagers are the "in" thing this summer, but this beer is the one that started it and I honestly don't think it has been bested yet. I like Eliot Ness more as a craft beer, but it goes beyond the style. Devils backbone seems tame by comparison. Have it with food and be happy. Six pack worthy for sure.

This is a nice, dark lager with a pleasant aroma. The taste has a healthy bitterness, but it's pretty smooth going down and doesn't linger in any unappealing way.

Pours clear, chestnut-brown, with off-white head, leaving a ring of lacing .

Smells of bready malt, fresh-out-of-the oven bread crust, and a hint of (cooked)lemon, & something sweet.

Taste is roasted grain , brown sweet bread/molasses ( a la gingerbread, minus the ginger) , a touch of nuttiness, finishing with a light brushstroke of pleasant bitterness.
Smooth, oily feel, until the fine, moderate carbonation kicks in.

Overall a good one that I wouldn't mind having again.

It's a beer I drink when the options are limited at some of the Mexican restaurants in my ville. Not a horrible beer just not worth me buying outside the Mex eats.

A very pleasing appearance, clear dark reddish brown with a 1" head poured into pint glass. My sniffer doesn't work well but the flavor hit me as a caramelly coffee. Feel was there then gone too quick. Would drink again but wouldn't run right out and stock my shelves.
