Drank in an Argentinian restaurant in Mexico City.

Pours bronze with a small light-brown head. Light carbonation rising.

Aroma of malts, light hops, light adjuncts.

Taste is of sweet malts and adjuncts. Not too much there.

Mouthfeel is light, cleansing and dry.

Overall, very drinkable, sessionable, refreshing. Not a great beer, but decent for the right setting/occasion.

Pours a clear almost amber color with a smallish bubbly white head that dissipates quickly and leaves minimal lace. Wow there is something in the aroma here other than corn and hops! Darker malts may actually be present here. Sweet malty aroma gives some hints of caramel, and lightly toasted bread. Taste is malty and a little sweet with hints of caramel and cocoa. Very little if any hops are found in this brew. Light body, heavy level of carbonation, syrupy/watery mouthfeel. One of the better Mexican beers.

Day 6 Mexico!

A: Nice dark carmel color with the best head retention Ive seen yet here, 1/4" Thich foamy nice clinging to glass.

S: Rich malts blast the nose some other sweet carmelish notes.

T: The best one yet, wish they had this is the US. Malty rich tiny bubbles washing the palate.

M: Light and refreshing, much better than a Corona.

D: Very much so if you are in Mexico get some Leon.

ABV 4.5%
can, 355 ml.
It poured a light amber colour with head that disappeared straight away.
Nothing special on the aroma, almost non existent.
Taste, the same. Nothing traceable, nothing distinguishable.
Medium on the body and light carbonation.
This one is like your usual mexican beer with some drops of a colour agent, just to change its colour, nothing else. Really disappointed with this one, I was expecting much more taste.

One of the good ones from Mexico, not the best but not bad at all. Pours deep amber, almost copper with a very mild foam head. Aroma and taste are of munich malts, almost no hops.

This is another dark beer I had in Mexico. This like dark modelo, is so much better than corona. This has some sweetness from dark malt, caramel and toffee notes too.

Serving Type: 355 mL Can

A- Pours a colour very similar to Coca-Cola with the carbonation bubbles to match. I actually don't think I've seen carbonation this robust in anything other than soda. 1/2 inch bubbly off-white head that dissipates within seconds. No lacing to speak of. Very unbeer-like appearance.

S- Sweet, dark malt, not of the roasted variety. Hints of dark fruit.

T- Same as the aroma. Little bitterness, mainly serving to balance out the sweetness from the malts.

M- Medium-Light body and robust, high carbonation.

O- Not a terrible beer, just terribly lacking in some areas (appearance and feel mainly). Good aroma and taste. Easy drinking, I suppose.

This was the "dark" beer at the all inclusive at Playa Del Carmin. I drank plenty of them. Some were VERY good and rivaled Negra Modela. Others were VERY bad. The good ones were dark amber with a fairly good off white head. The aroma was very mild but I could detect some malt. The taste was of malt and the moutfeel was moderate. These were nice drinking at the cabana on the beach watching topless sunbathers. The bad ones had a off, sour smell and a taste to match. After a couple of these, I would give up beer for a few hours and was forced to drink taquilla and watch the topless sunbathers.

From notes. Drank in Mexico on vacation.

Pours a dark amber. It has a caramel hue when held to the light. A decent head that quickly disappears. Okay lacing. Sadly the scents are weak. Some malt and sweet molasses. No detectable hops at all. No balance.

Flavors are pretty good. They are straining to assert themselves but they are there. Sweet malt and a hint of chocolate. I mean a hint! A dry caramel for the finish. Not much for hops or balance but the flavors that are there are quite refreshing.

One to drink on a hot Mexican day on the Riviera Maya. The mouthfeel is somewhat weak. A bit thin. These drink too easily. Could be a bolder beer.

All in all not a bad drink. It just could be more assertive.

Can, found this while on vacation in Mexico at one of the major grocery outlets.

Amber, just darker than fat tire. Very effervescent in mouth, slightly malty with almost no bitterness. Finishes off with a non-lasting slightly sweet flavor.

Easy to drink, super light mouthfeel. For beer found in Mexico, it's not bad.

Look: Dark brown color, bare head of foam with white burrs; Smell: Grain, roasted malt and toffee; Taste: Roasted malt, toffee, balanced with resiny hops; Mouthfeel: Refreshing, medium bitterness, high carbonation and medium body; Drinkability: Acceptable in all respects, the junior version of Negra Modelo, but the presentation is very bad.

A: a good copper in color, reddish tints, a light tan head, lots of carb, completely traslucent, very clear

S: corn and butter, some sweetnes and caramel

T: some sweet notes, crispy on tongue, a very tiny toast flavour, there is no end at all, is a very simple beer on the style

a full bodied beer , munich dunkel lager style, its beer style in this site is wrong, is not a marzen oktoberfest; special beer for a southeastern mexican food, like a cochinita pibil, motulenian eggs, papadzules, etc; its appearance in light dark made this beer one of my favorites from Grupo Modelo; drinkability is over the average, try with german cuisine; 95% recommended.

This beer was OK. It was very drinkable but not great. Something called Negra I was expecting a fuller taste. Other than my expectations, it was very smooth, and would be good for a casual drinker. It was very similar to Corona, but a little more malty.

Well, things do change. That or my memories are not up to reality.
I used to drink this beer some 25 years ago, at least for a brief time.
I clearly remember a darker and unfiltered beer.

Now? Well...

Pours an amber-reddish liquid, with no head and a bit of lacing.

Smells of adjuncts go to your nose, and almost nothing else.

Taste has a little bitterness, some hops and, I have to admit, it's a refreshing concoction.

Mouthfeel is stingy due to some carbonation, and has a dry finish and aftertaste.

I can have some more, especially with some spicy and hot Yucatán food.

Probably one of my best beers here. The lager is in, but with a different taste. Montejo and Leon are brewed in another state of Mexico, that makes them different, and without any doubt, the original owners were a little more interested in fine beers.

Pours a brilliantly clear amber/copper color with a smallish head that dissipates very quickly. Smells of musty, grassy hops (Saaz anyone?), very slight Munich malt aroma and that odd corn-like smell that adjunct beers tend to have.

Taste: The German malts are evident, but only in relation to other Mexican lagers. The hops are most definitely Saaz and dominate the beer with their distinctive flavor - which is not really that outstanding, IMO.

Mouthfeel: High carbonation, as expected, and a thin body make this beer mediocre at best.

Drinkability: I could drink many of these, but I probably wouldn't want to.

Much better than the standard Mexican fare, but still a disappointing beer and a disgrace to the Octoberfest style.

November 1st, 2013 - The international tour continues, and all beers, regardless of origin or merit will receive a at least a token sip. This time it's the Leon Negra, an odorless and almost flavorless carbonated malt liquor. There's a slight touch of raucchbier smokiness, but very little, and nothing else there to bolster it. It is a palate cleaner, maybe, closer to mineral water than beer. And even given the weather, it's not enough to feel quenched or refreshed. It just is - existing, absent of feeling or character.

I recommend this mexican beer.

Poured this one into a pint glass in the restaurant today.

It poured a coppery/orange color into the glass, which isn't quite so "dunkel". It looks more like an average Vienna lager. Foam is about an inch and lasts less than a quantum physics phenomenon.

Smell is boring, with some malts and adjuncts.

Taste is soft, with malt/adjunct sweetness and a hint of caramel quickly contrasted by some burnt flavors. The burnt flavors are smooth, but more intense than those you'd get in a bottle of guinness draught...extra points for that. No hop bitterness to speak of.

Feels is light, but not too light. It's just right for one of these soft-tasting beers, although carbonation is a bit high.

Overall, really good compared to its cousins, but still pretty boring.

Reviewed from notes - had this beer while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a glass.

Appearance - Light brown - the first (and only) beer that I found in Puerto Vallarta that wasn't yellow! There's a very small head that dissipates into nothing shortly after the beer is poured.

Smell - There's a bit of malt and maybe a faint smell of toasted grains but that's about it.

Taste - While this beer has more oomph than the other beers I had in Mexico, it's quite tame. There's a slight malt character that comes across throughout each sip, but not much else.

Mouthfeel - Just like water.

Overall - This might be one of the best beers available if you're in Mexico. Visit for the cheap tequila, not the brew.

Clear copper color, white head, with mediums sized bubbles. Lots of carbonation in the pint glass

I can't place the aroma, seems earthy. Not the most pleasant smell. I don't note much for aroma hops

Taste is malty, fairly light in taste, small bittering finish.

Fizzy. Not a great version of a Munich style beer.

My second beer I drank from the bottle, rather than a glass, and the experience was more pleasant.

Poured from a 1.2 liter bottle into a 30 oz. glass mug.

A: Dark caramel color, with a bubbly head that dissipates very quickly, leaving no lacing.
S: Smells like a stereotypical adjunct lager. I instantly think of Budweiser when smelling this beer.
T: A very slightly roasted flavor with a certain metallic and bitter aftertaste.
M: Light bodied, low to medium carbonation, fairly smooth.
D: This beer is an interesting one for me. The color and the aroma don't match up too well. I was expecting more of a roasty aroma. This beer is very drinkable, especially at 4.5% ABV. Luckily, this beer was a gift from a buddy of mine who visited Cancun. Overall, a decent beer that will push me to try more dunkel lagers...

It pours a copper-to-brown-reddish color with no head.

Served very cold, it is a refreshing beer, often offered at places with food from Yucatan (mayan).

It has a good drinkability, fair carbonization, a little bitter, and at the end it feels dry.

Like Montejo, try it with some Cochinita and Frijoles con Puerco.

This is a nice Mexican beer. I had it while in Quintana Roo. Solid amber color, nice balance in the taste, and very drinkable. I am surprised this is not a more popular beer in Mexico.
