January 30, 2013
Finally got to try a 355ml León bottle on our last full day in Zihuatanejo, a small corner bar at the corner of Avenidas Vicente Guerrero y Nicholas Bravo. 20 pesos - served from a fridge, I poured to a small glass and sat at a shady sidewalk counter facing the street.

4.5% - "Cerveza Negra"

A: Tawny/amber color, mostly clear. A 1/2 finger ivory head and plenty of rising carbonation. head fades somewhat quickly, but lace sticks around awhile, descending slowly while glistening in the backlit sunshine.

S: Sweet malty/cereal scent - grassy, doughy, some caramel.

T: Crisp 'apple' flavor and a pleasant 'baked bread' graininess. Starchy, nutty quality and good balanced sweetness.

M: Slightly effervescent, light-medium body.

O: Good flavors, clean and refreshing. Very easy to finish. Considerably more flavor than much of the standard 'light lagers' in Mexico, so it's an option for anyone looking to go beyond Corona, Dos Equis, Tecate and the like... pretty well done for the 'Dunkel Lager' style.

It pours a copper-to-brown-reddish color with no head.

Served very cold, it is a refreshing beer, often offered at places with food from Yucatan (mayan).

It has a good drinkability, fair carbonization, a little bitter, and at the end it feels dry.

Like Montejo, try it with some Cochinita and Frijoles con Puerco.

This is supposed to be a Munich style beer. Maybe so, but I doubt it. Still, it was one of the more enjoyable beers I had on a recent trip to Mexico. It was amber in color with a small head. It had a malty, sweet aroma. A caramel taste with some warmth to it. I thought it had a little substance, and would drink it again.

Poured from a brown 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Unhazed and dark orange/brown. There was a small head on the beer but it was gone in a flash.

Smell: Skunky with some sweet darker malts.

Taste: Little bit of skunk. Bitter finish. Easily drinkable. Good alternative to Corona if you're ever in Mexico.

A good, not great, Mexican beer. Fuller and more flavorful than you typical light lager. A refreshing change from Corona and similar. If we're judging based on style guidelines, this beer gets good marks, low- to mid-30s (out of 50).
Mild aroma of malt with slight corn/vegetables. Balanced flavor with a bit of caramel. No hop aroma or flavor, only enough neutral bitter to balance the sweet background. Moderately low body. Finishes clean. Good beer with chilled spiced shrimp or chips and salsa. I'd buy it again.

I took a bottle of this home with me from my vacation in Mexico. Its in the typical slender 325 ml Mexican beer bottle with a silk screened label.

It pours a clear copper color with no head retention and zero lacing. The aroma is of rye bread, cotton candy and tobacco. The taste is quite sweet with a slight astringency. Caramel apples and hop bitterness become apparent in the finish. The mouthfeel is syrupy but light with rather light carbonation.

This is an OK dark lager, but a little on the sweet side for me. Negra Modelo is a far more balanced Mexican dark lager.

Drank in an Argentinian restaurant in Mexico City.

Pours bronze with a small light-brown head. Light carbonation rising.

Aroma of malts, light hops, light adjuncts.

Taste is of sweet malts and adjuncts. Not too much there.

Mouthfeel is light, cleansing and dry.

Overall, very drinkable, sessionable, refreshing. Not a great beer, but decent for the right setting/occasion.
