Moose Drool Brown AleMoose Drool Brown Ale

Brewed by:
Big Sky Brewing Company
Montana, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
It's chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and Willamette hops.

Poured from the bottle into a shaker pint glass.

A dark reddish chestnut body, with a very light tan head, makes about a finger tall. Head doesnt stick around much, and minimal lacing if any.

Nose is a real classic simple brown ale. Some nutty character and mild roast, milk chocolate and cream. Faint bitter hop angle creeps out a little, but it is pretty small with the beer emphasising malt and a little roast.

Taste seems to match the hints of the nose. Mild chocolate and a bit of tannic hazelnut quality. Slightly drying on the finish with a simple malt backbone. Body feel is fairly simple but without fault, and some more milk chocolate while finishing. Many flavors are present and balanced, but not particularly large.

Simple solid and good.

A: Pours a dark brown with amber highlights. Head is tan and about a finger or so in height. Both lacing are head retention are fair.

S: Nutty aromas, plus dark breads and malty caramel sweetness.

T: Toasted grains, caramel, walnuts and an earthy bitterness.

M: Medium in body, with carbonation between low and moderate. The finish is of roasted malts and some coffee-like bitterness.

O: Overall a pretty good beer that is well-balanced in the sweetness and bitterness.

Poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass

A- Dark mahogany in color. About a finger and a half creamy tan head. Nice retention and decent lacing which melts to a froth around the rim around the sides.

S- Roasted malts with nutty tones. Caramel and dark chocolate notes.

M- Medium body with nice carbonation. Very creamy.

T- Nice balance between malts. Enough hops to make a little kick to overcome the initial sweetness. Lots of toasty malts and nutty flavor. Has a bit of a tobacco/coffee aftertaste in finish.

O- Pleasantly surprised. Grabbed this to complete my 6 pack variety pack and would get it again. Very drinkable. A solid take on a Brown Ale.

12-oz. bottle into a pint glass at my house on Sept. 14, 2012 (purchased at BevMo! In La Mesa (San Diego, Calif.) for a variety12-pack price of $13.99 (w/ card) on Sept. 14, 2012).1-2 fingers of head. Reddish brown, almost mahogany, with khaki tan head. Good retention all-around, as it should be. Thick, frothy foamy on the sides.

Smelled toffee, caramel, dark chocolate and coffee.

Tasted a lot more bitter than I thought it would. Coffee, coffee beans, camp fire and ash tray. Also dark chocolate.

Full body. Creamy texture. Average-to-above carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

About what I’d expect from a porter, but it didn’t wow me.
